You got some great ideas Alan! Was also thinking about Clyde getting back home and actually trying some of the growth patches. Or it could have happened in the library while observing the meeting between the Coach and Dan (same outcome). A small "sample" was deposited onto the clothing of Clyde, that he did not notice. The "sample" was big enough to come in contact with his skin, making his transformation being delayed in beginning. His transformation could take several days to complete. You already showed how he turned out a few years ago when he returned home to his father's pharmacy. But this time he brought home a friend, Yu.
