Mortality

Recently a friend of mine just passed from this realm of existence. I'm not religious and wouldn't considered myself overly spiritual either. But I have strong appreciation for the intangible and abstract, the grey area between science and art, reality and imagination. This often leads to me to think of things in a broad, big picture way, akin to some Buddhist philosophies (and physics) of universal connections between all matter and energy. Nothing is created nor destroyed in a physical sense. Just transformed or transmuted.

When we experience loss, it can feel devastating. Especially when it feels premature. When a young person dies, we can't help but feel robbed. My friend was my age when he died tragically and suddenly. He had so much more life to live and love to give but it just wasn't in the cards. Now we are faced with the reality of how nothing is guaranteed, each day is not promised to you. Your mortality should be acknowledged, respected, and expressed in how you live your life every day.

I leave you with this quote by the late and great Carl Sagan:

The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.
