However, I love that you share your feeling, many times the same thing happens to me, I feel dissatisfied and it makes me want to abandon the work and move on to something else... the sense of improvement is a constant personal struggle. I also find myself doing so much detail work for backgrounds when I really would rather do those fun painterly shapes you talk about. I feel like I spend so much unnecessary time on things that should be playful and quick, this is a great reminder and inspiration to me to loosen up and try something new. Thank you!
