I prefer it over just "do what you want" commissions because I have some idea of what the comumer likes and still have the freedom to add more to the scene.
When people give me every background detail to a piece it actually makes me very overwhelmed and it's hard for me to balance everything there are asking for. I often feel because there is so much focus on what needs to be in the scene the emotion of the piece is lost.
My advice is to pick an artist suits the picture's needs. Don't force an artist who is not strong in design and architecture to build you a skyscrapper.
