Gosh, what a moving and inspiring film. I just rewatched it with you. By the way, he wears a turban on his head because he is from a religious community called Sikhism. Which makes him a Sikh. And in the army or as young boys or in the hot weather, they typically cover only their man bun with a thin piece of cloth. But on formal occasions and at work and otherwise, they wear the entire turban. Their hair and turban are a matter of pride for them. Sikhs have a long history of being proud and valiant warriors to defend their community and the innocent. They also believe in acts of service and helping and many still carry that culture forward. In the end, Pakistan confers him with the title- The Flying Sikh. In Hindi and Punjabi, a Sikh man is called a Sardar. You may have heard his coach call him "Sardara" or someone in the village address his father as "Sardar Ji". The "ji" is added to show respect. During the partition, the state of Punjab extended from Pakistan into the north west of India. Many Hindus and Sikhs had to run away to India since Pakistan was going to be a country for Muslims. Many Muslims in Punjab and other areas of India fled India to go to Pakistan. There are millions of stories just like Milkha Singh. It was one of the largest and most violent migrations in world history. Because Punjab was at the border, it saw a lot of violence. Many people ended up in India with another part of their family back in Pakistan. Some of our grandparents and great grandparents spent their childhood in Pakistan.
