The presence of Peter Capaldi reminds me to recommend The Thick of It, in which he creates one of the all-time great British comedy characters.

Professor MacLeish trying to impress a load of undergrads at a dinner party is pretty wankerish behaviour, and Jez has his number and actually gets a few decent jabs in on him in their little sparring contest. It's one of the few instances of one of the El Dude Brothers being right. Also, Darty probably was great in 1994. The mid-nineties in Britain was sort of the second coming of the sixties in every sense, and these two would've been part of the last generation not to have to pay tuition fees and who got maintenance grants instead of loans, so Jez probably lived a pretty carefree life enjoying the early days of Cool Britannia and had a great time. Even by 2003/4 when this episode was made it was already a very different world.

I always got the feeling that Darty was a former technical college or polytechnic, and not remarkably prestigious. Anyway, this is peak Peep Show and they're both awful in their own ways: Mark is extremely weird, Jez is extremely stupid, and yeah, both ruin their chances through sheer cowardice and idiocy.
