Violet Gardens

New Kei commission.

This time I wanted to draw her in a dress, but I wanted something with a more casual/playful look, rather than something like an evening dress (which will still happen but some other time). So basically something cute but still with an elegant touch to it. The shoes play a big part here too, and I absolutely love them. I actually looked at a ton of shoes to find something I liked and these are pretty much my favorite type, strappy/lace up low block heels. Plus the little bow at the back adding to the cuteness (and matching the bigger bow on the dress, above the tail).

I also brought back the shorter hair from "Bashful" which is supposed to be her default so youll be seeing more of this, although I tweaked it a bit here to make it nicer and more to my taste. I do like doing different hairstyles all the time especially when drawing the same character a lot so thats why you rarely see the same one, lol.

But the biggest challenge with this one was the composition. I was really struggling to make it work because of how she is taking so much space on the right of the pic, while leaving a lot of empty space on the left. So the sketch looked really underwhelming and I was worried Id have to make some major changes to make it work, but fortunately that wasnt the case. I managed to do it just by adding those leaves on the left side while leaving the right side empty, since its already covered by the character.

Im a huge fan of symmetry so stuff like this can trigger me easily, if I feel like a pic is unbalanced in some way... Its one of those things you can just tell even if you dont know anything about art (same goes for photography of course). When something has a bad composition it just doesnt feel good to look at no matter how good everything else is.

Anyway, lastly colors are the usual Kei stuff, lol. Lots of purple, especially of the lighter violet or lavender kind. I wanted it to do look like an almost magical place youd want to go to on a date.
