Its Asha! Its been a while since the last one, "Soft", which was back in October 2019 (and is probably in my top 5 favorites).
Looking at the end result you might thing this is a pretty simple one but yeah, it was anything but... I struggled so much with this one that I actually had to take a break and work on something else in between (which is when I did Claire), before finally coming back and figuring it out.
Anyway, this time we wanted to have her wearing a bunnysuit, and as usual the rest was up to me. Very early on I had this idea of her putting her ears up with her hands instead of wearing bunny ears, which I later found out is actually already a thing called "bunny pose", lol. Still, I thought it was stupidly cute so I HAD to do it... But boy was it hard. Lining everything up so that the hands would end up in the right position and the arms would look natural and not cover anything important (read: chest), plus finding a pose that brought the whole thing together... I went through so many different things until I found something that worked.
Originally it wasnt even a full body pic, but I feel like legs are such a key part of the bunnysuit look that I had to have them. And well, those hips alone make it worthwhile.
If youre familiar with Asha youll notice Ive also changed her hairstyle a bit, as Ive been doing with most recurring characters... Instead of having the full bangs I gave her those side ones along with a ponytail and it looks so good, I thought it worked really well with the whole bunny theme.
Then at the time of the sketch I also had 2 different expressions and left the decision up to her. The other one was more of a disgusted look, like "I cant believe Im wearing this", and it was pretty hilarious (I should have kept the sketch of that), but she went with the pout instead since it was a better match for her personality.
One of the things Im happiest/most proud with this one is the top of the bunnysuit, and the shoes. I love that I managed to gave them that shiny leathery texture just through the lighting alone. I rarely get to draw this kind of material so its something I dont have any experience with, so I was a bit worried I wouldnt be able to pull it off and it would look flat.
Lastly just a comment on the background, which was also a pain in the ass... Originally I just wanted her to be on a stage with a spotlight on her, but I had no idea how to make it work so I gave up and started trying different things (this added to the frustration that led me to take a break from it), and nothing looked good enough until I stumbled on this one. Im not even sure what I was trying to do here, but I get some strong "Alice in Wonderland" vibes from it, which goes really well with the whole theme.
So yeah thats it, overall still not happy with it and its an obvious downgrade from "Soft", but its just something you have to deal with as an artist... its impossible to keep the same level of quality every single time, so you just do the best you can.
Ive also attached a sketch Im working on (its the monthly pic of my au ra), but I still havent finished it so I dont know what it will look like in the end, but I do love the sketch so I really wanted to post it. Aaaand thats it for today.
