Lum

Today we have Lum from Urusei Yatsura, which is a character I had on my to draw list for a while, and I was lucky to have someone commission her. This actually goes for the next few posts as well, I managed to draw a few more characters Ive been wanting to for a long time so Im looking forward to posting those as well.

Anyway back to this one, its no secret I love drawing green hair and that was definitely the main appeal of the character for me, especially combined with her "tiger skin" outfit. Although the only part of that you see here is the boots, and the little choker I added which isnt originally part of it but I thought it looked cute. If I had it my way I would have drawn her in the full outfit with no nudity, focusing more on something cute/shy, but this is what I was asked to do and thats fine too. I tried to still give her an innocent vibe through her expression.

I say this in pretty much every pic lately but my favorite thing here is the coloring. When I first finished it I wasnt sure about how it looked because its so different from my usual stuff with how bright and vibrant it is, but when I looked at it the next day I instantly went "ok, this looks great" and this might just be how I need to approach beach type pics to make them work. Of course, it helps that the character itself has great colors and the hair/eyes definitely stand out the most.

Also I always like doing a sort of green/blue gradient when I draw green hair, rather than just pure green since this looks so much better. Plus her hair seems to be one of those that varies a lot between the two depending on where you look. I guess you could just say its "teal" as the base and any deviation is up to the artist.

Ah and you might notice the subtle tan lines too, especially where her "bikini bottom" should be, its something I always like adding in these beach pics.

Lastly Im including a sketch as well as a teaser, although its not entirely accurate compared to the finished version since I changed some things, but I really like it on its own so yeah. Ive drawn her before but it was over 2 years ago and it was just a bust/portrait so this time I wanted to do a full body, and base it on the shadowbringers design because I like it so much. She wont be the next post though, Ill leave that one as a surprise since I think a lot of people will be happy to see her.

Waow, woudl never expect to see Lum art again, and from you ! Make me feel old again, ahaha. But really happy to see your take on her, beautiful gracefull and tastefull nudity for her. Really love it, thanks for bringing this "old" waifu of my youth ahah ! :D Gorgeous work Sora !

Ooh she's super cute, I love the bright sunny colours. And the tan lines! Love 'em. But that Y'shtola though! I can't wait to see it finished, I already love the sketch so much.

That was something else I noticed as well, the shadow effects, that I meant to comment on as well but didn't. I think you did super well here but knowing what your strengths and likes are definitely help decide on ideas for us. You know your style best and we are here to see it! :D

Well I AM happy with this one since its bright and colorful as a beach scene should be, but my style is usually much darker which doesnt go well with them and the lighting ends up look unnatural, like its taken on a photoset rather than an actual beach Another thing is I hate doing "open" backgrounds... My art relies a lot on the feeling of intimacy and while that comes naturally with indoors settings, with outdoors settings I always have to come up with ways to "cheat" which is why you see me add leaves in the corners (or palmtrees in the case of beach scenes) or if I draw a forest Ill add trees on both sides of the pic, to make it feel like an enclosed space Then theres also the fact I want something to be blocking the light so I can do those nice light and shadow effects which is what brings pics to life Anyway, there are many factors and in short its really hard to adapt my style into an open bright scene without losing the feel I want to go for

I know you've said in the past that you don't like doing settings on the beach, but I think I've liked all of your beach themes. The subtle tan lines are such a nice touch here and aren't overdone. Looking forward to the finished sketch!

She looks really nice. Nice tan lines and love the tiger pattern boots and the choker is nice. Don't really know the anime but this char looks reaaaally nice lol. I also like how you do hair with gradients, and especially now with the richer colours it looks even better. Absolutely like her look and all. Wouldn't mind fully clothed (well looked her up "clothed" but still). Very nicely done. Also looking forward to Y'shtola especially inj the new ShB outfit, its my fav look of hers and I kinda always liked y'shtolas look ingame etc. so 10/10 can't wait for full.

The tan lines are really nice, good job on the hair too. Cant wait for your next piece!
