2023-09-13 21:02:49 +0000 UTCAll Im gonna say after watching Will talk about the media he likes and dislikes on his streams is that we shouldnt try to convince Will to watch something that he has disliked beforehand since more often than not he’ll get super stubborn with his line of reasoning and he’ll already be very much set with how he feels about it. Case in point: Vinland Saga. He thinks the authors intent of the hard swing the other direction is bullshit. Hes talked about it before on stream but the long and short of it is he thinks it sucks. I personally havent even watched the One Piece anime or read the manga although I already had low expectations because of Deathnote and Bebop but I ended up surprisingly liking this adaptation. I’d be surprised if Will ended up liking it though but I hope he does and not just end up eviscerating it like others he disliked in the past.

The nationalities for the characters were confirmed by Oda in the manga like 12+ years ago; long before the panel he references and that cover image is not cannon. It's just a fun thing Oda does not related to the story. also, It's definitely not "fast food" of anime. The world building alone is very substantive. I think a battle anime is more deserving of that title.

2023-09-09 19:43:47 +0000 UTCAs someone who's also had people tell them they stopped watching shows after a rant from me, I *suspect* it's at least indirectly related to his tolerance for praise for the show dropping over the volume and level of praise being wildly disproportionate when compared to his own impression of the show. (full disclosure: I have literally zero One Piece horses in any race, I have more to watch and read than I can possibly do before I die already, and adding absurdly long anything to that always makes me hesitant) When you hear how great a thing you don't think is great is, eventually any praise starts to feel similarly unjustified. Takes a lot of introspection to try to wrangle that stuff, and it gets more "weighty" the more that seemingly everyone disagrees. I should also note that I have been on years long kicks of getting away from this approach and mentality as much as possible, and recommend anyone who's on it do the same and find that place where you let everyone appreciate their own thing without even the subtle or backhanded "you can like garbage, that's okay"

I've heard you talk about shitty DC and Marvel movies for hours on end. Most of them don't have any substantial content other than conveying the idea that protecting the status quo is a good thing. They run around in the goofiest latex outfits with underwear on top of their tight leggings for fuck sake. I can still enjoy that dogshit. What is special about One Piece is that it's able to simplify very heavy topics into a very digestible, in your words, fast food anime and the world building is insanely good. Oda was able to make homophobes love an expressively gay character. That is not something by chance. It's his talent. What makes One Piece very cool is something that you don't quite understand or appreciate which is totally OK. One Piece still has a lot of weak points. The pacing, the still shots, a weird perspective on women with little diversity, Luffy's toxic positivity, the plot armors, etc. It's still a great story and an anime in my opinion. Also if you watch something for so long just to find things to shit on, of course you will not enjoy it. You are basically making yourself hate it. It's extremely easy to make a marvel or DC fan feel stupid. But that is more stupid than enjoying marvel or DC. We all wanna just have fun and enjoy it.

The netflix adaptation feels much more forced especially for introducing the characters. It's probably because it's hard to give the same depth to the characters in a short time. For example in the netflix adaptation, Luffy talks about his dreams much more explicitly and talks about freedom. In the anime we learn it through Luffy's interactions with other characters rather than him describing himself. For example when Cody makes excuses for not going for his dreams, Luffy goes Damn I hate you lol. But I think it's still a successful adaptation overall and I'm glad you like it.

There nationalities are cannon as well, He wrote about them in SBS which he always does character backstories and zoro's family tree.

It was in an SBS where Oda answers fan questions, like what jobs the characters would have irl. The color spread thing is totally unrelated and just for fun to draw the characters dressed up, and Oda has done it many times but it’s completely unrelated to the story

2023-09-04 22:26:08 +0000 UTCNot gonna lie I love Will and never miss a stream but (with peace and love, peace and love), for someone so open minded and in tune with the TV and cinema industry, he dislikes a lot of stuff without even watching it. People definitely get triggered by that sort of behavior, not just because they want to defend their favorite piece of content but because it kind of feels unjustified and uninformed. The same thing happened with Andor, when he frequently said it was bad without watching it, got chatters triggered and later admitted it was actually good after watching 1 episode. It's definitely something everyone does though, we all have some of those fanboy moments.

Franky’s whole character is based of being “American” and his hairstyles too, it’s also why he is powered by Cola, for Zoro he one of the only straw hat’s that came from a country that is essentially a historical Japanese-samurai location. Also, just because something is an after thought does not mean it cannot become cannon. Like for example, if there is a plot point established by chapter 1 and it ends up being changed 1000 chapters later as an after thought, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t the new canon. It just means narratively things shifted or a new plot point was discovered. Oda made these characters without nationalities in mind more than likely but as time progressed he decided to label them with countries they fit within either by looks or style or even slang. Also, to go back to Robin you are right, but her moves are both Spanish/French. She would be Russian in our world though. Might just be an aesthetics thing here because her move set sounds fantastic as is.

But even then it's surface level at most, Robin having French moves is because shes a more romantic character and French is the language of love, and Sanji using French is just because people think of France when they think of super high level cooking. There is nothing cannonical to their "nationalities", they were given them as an afterthought.

If you compare one piece from that time to now it would be insane to call them equal. I got hooked since usopp recruitment and if you watch 300 episodes you know if you'll enjoy it or not. Noone should need to spend literal 100s of hours just to judge whether its worth watching or not and fans that claim it gets good 7294 episodes in are setting expectations that the anike is not good until that episode which makes you go into it with low expectations and bad image of the show. sorry for the rant
