Monster Hunter Stories might actually be up your alley. It's a turn based RPG that's all about exploring, crafting, and collecting Monsties, so no need for things like fast reflexes or quick time events. Naturally there's things like quests, some grinding, and strategizing, but the battle mechanic is mostly like Rock-Paper-Scissors, so it's not too hard.

Remember Kirby AirRiders? Nintendo announced more information about the game yesterday. You should check it out!

Damn these trailers make me wanna pick up the Monster Hunter Stories series

(Team Rider) FTW 😅

I would recommend playing 1 before 2, but if not there is a recap of sorts in 2. I think you both will enjoy the series! Riders Vs Hunters!

I still have yet to play any of the Story games. But from what I hear from tired Pokémon players, they really like them. So that really says something. I would like to try them out one day, but other games I’m more interested in keep popping up. Like Digimon Time Strangers. Which by the way, I’m joining someone on the YouTube side to vouch for some Digimon content one day.

WWW Suggestions I feel like you two have pretty much seen just about everything MH Stories related that I'd want reaction-wise (barring a playthrough/cutscene journey). So, I'll just leave this playlist of MH ecology vids from a big MH YTer called Oceaniz. Perhaps you've heard of him from other viewers? https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSTnzl-WzvZ96B11nRCQZnD8P1DMkEXlQ&si=lKg4Ld-LYXi5N6fE Lore/ecology vids like this are probably the next best thing I'd recommend in terms of future MH reactions (until MH Wilds inevitably gets a big DLC expansion). Team Darkside also has some good ones.

I remember playing through both monster hunter stories games! Reminded me of pokemon but with voice acting! Never did defeat the final boss on the second game on switch. Really need to revisit it soon, its an amazingly wholesome series of games different to the original monster hunter series. Though the second one did get a little darker.

As for the subject of if you two should play Monster Hunter Stories or do a cutscene journey, I'm not leaning too hard into any direction. I think the stories and characters are fun enough to finish the story through to the end, but I wouldn't say they're phenomenal compared to other JRPGs I've played. The combat and character progression mechanics are certainly more palatable for newcomers to the genre when compared to the mainline MHs.

As you've probably been able to see, the main mechanic separating the Stories series from the main games is the ability to raise and befriend "Monsties". As opposed to Pokémon's method of capturing creatures (engaging them in battle, wearing them down, then using a Pokeball), MH Stories' is a touch more involved. You obtain Monsties by entering monster dens and swiping their eggs. Getting eggs from certain "rare dens" will net you with eggs that'll hatch Monsties with better genes. Speaking of Pokémon, before MH Stories started going to other platforms I honestly considered it to be the more worthwhile monster collecting game series over Pokémon in terms of what was exclusive to Nintendo systems. The production value of MH Stories is something that I feel like Pokémon should've been striving toward for a while now. Most notably when it comes to visuals and voice acting. Granted, Pokémon has a lot more complexity in its RPG mechanics and a much larger number of creatures to account for in development. But for a series that is so much more profitable than Monster Hunter (which is saying something because MH is a BIG selling series), I just think that the least they could do is start having dialogue actually be voiced over.

JT

As I've said on here before mainline Monster Hunters have just never managed to have much sticking power with me, and that's largely because I just find the combat to be too slow for what I want from action RPGs. Monster Hunter Stories 1 is the only Monster Hunter game that I've played to "completion" since it's a turn based RPG that is much more in line with the speed of other games of the genre. It still has a lot of the core mechanics that are a part of Monster Hunter's identity. Your progression largely revolves around building up your armor and weapons as you defeat bigger and stronger monsters. There's also a variety of weapons that provide certain quirks to favor different playstyles/battle scenarios. Not nearly as much variety as the main MH games, but they're there.
