We share the same point of view about the ending. Even if we (and Maelle) got attached to this world and its people, staying in it isn't the right thing to do. It's devastating to see Verso, Sciel, Lune, Esquie and Monoco disappear, but life has to go on. The Dessendre family had to grieve, it was essential in order for them to move on. Verso's death will hurt forever, but life isn't stopping for them. They need to be together, to overcome the most difficult times before life stabilizes. And as you said, Maelle could also paint them all in another canvas! It was time to let little Verso rest in peace. I was very conflicted myself when I chose Verso's ending, but was finally convinced when I saw little Verso wanting to stop painting. He is tired. Fake Verso was the only one who understood little Verso. Grief seems impossible, but we need to go through it. It was time for everyone to let go of this world.

While I personally lean towards Verso's ending, I definitely feel that there is no right choice as both endings are valid, neither side is right or wrong, I feel. I think to outright reject one side's ending misses the overall meaning in this story.

2025-08-16 22:06:34 +0000 UTCProviding the player the option to decide the canvas' fate is something that's gonna make the ending a real point of discussion for many years to come, and one that I don't believe will ever see a consensus. Which is something I can appreciate, because that's the sign of a meaningful creative work. However, I also can't help but think back on other RPGs that have certain story beats that have continued to be discussed online, and can't help but feel annoyed at the inevitability that conversation surrounding the ending will be polluted by people who don't know how the hell to act.
