Final Fantasy 16 Ending Reaction

Comments

First time ever seeing FF16, so I'm rather surprised with how many similarities the story had with the first Xenoblade Chronicles. *wink wink*

Pyrodragon3993

As we have discussed a possible FF7 play in the future we won't watch this now, but may circle back to it in the future. Thanks for sharing it with us! 🙏

Reiterating what JT said but thank you so much for giving this game a shot and I’m so glad this managed to get into your guys top 10 here’s hoping you guys get to FF7 next or another alternative like Persona 5 now that you two are more comfortable with turn based games after Expedition 33 🙏

seels

I kinda think you should go in reverse order for final fantasy, but it would mean waiting ages to get to ff7 so nevermind!. Looking forward to your next final fantasy playthrough whatever it might be!

Mosh Mia

You guys did it! Awesome the winged angel gimmick on Ultima was a kinda on the nose easter to Sephiroth in FF7 though lol.

Mosh Mia

I just realized ya finished this game in 16 parts. Ya'll are now obligated to follow this tradition with every other FF journey on this channel. FF7 in 7 parts lol jk

JT

FF16 is one of my all time newer favorite games, great music, awesome combat and enjoyable characters, im glad you two were able to enjoy the game and the roller-coaster of emotions and enjoyed it. my favorite ability has to be the Odin slash charged up all the way, its so cool. favorite Eikon battle i think is between leviathan and Guruda (i love how the movement in that fight feels like im a kaiji like Godzilla its so cool)

Triedge101

you sure are an odd lil dude

Just wanted to leave this last message to you two before this journey and all my comments are lost to the void as more room is made on Patreon. Thank you Ken and Bethany for taking other community members and I up on our suggestion to play this game. Seeing how it's become a contender for your top 10 is one reason why I go doing all this rambling and recommending here on Patreon. Out of the many content creators that I've dealt with over the years, you two are probably the only ones that really seemed to give a shit about what I have to say. I'm glad we were able to provide ya with a solid introduction into Final Fantasy. I understand how daunting getting into the series can be given its size and variety in direction. Hoping any future FF journeys will be just as enjoyable.

JT

I was cooking up a big comment last week in my notes that was gonna give you a big overview for each mainline FF game so you two would be able to take a look over 'em and see how ya might want to continue with FF in the future. But honestly, it was just more than what was needed, so I scrapped it. I already gave my thoughts on how ya should approach FF7 in the prior part, so I'll leave that can of worms alone. Final Fantasy 10 would be next best candidate imo. It's got a story, cast, and world that is highly considered among the best the series has to offer. It's the first numbered FF game to have full voice acting, so ya won't have to worry about that despite the game's age. The turn based combat system has a graphic that shows you which turn is coming next (the same way that Clair Obscur does). The world design is pretty linear, so I figure it'd be hard for you two to get lost. The character models and animations may come off as fairly dated, but that's the only big sticking point that I could think of as far as recommending it. Not trying to pressure ya'll into jumping right into another FF after this BTW. Wouldn't want ya to get burned out.

JT

1:55:15 Well, i feel like I've been sharing my favorite parts of this game throughout these comments of mine, so I'll skip that. Favorite Eikonic Ability? Depends on what type of enemy I'm fighting since different battles call favor some abilities better. But across the board the few I'd go with would be: Cold Snap, Rift Slip, Titan Block. I like the abilities that supplement your moveset and don't just boil down to "press button once and everything dies". Favorite Eikon Battle? Like I said last week, it's honestly Leviathan. That DPS check is a pain in the ass, sure, but imo it balances the cinematics and engagement the best out of all of them. The QTE segments of the Eikon battles in the base game "look" cool, but they aren't very engaging for me (especially after you've seen them repeatedly).

JT

1:41:39 I don't know if those types of shots can really be attributed to a "lack of effort" or the devs being lazy. I'd argue that the reason that a lot of the side missions are the way they are is due to there just being a lack of time and resources, especially as with set pieces as big as the Eikon battles. Though personally I wouldn't have minded the Eikon battles being less cinematic and letting that time, hardware memory, asset data being attributed to things that you had suggested could replace those types of shots.

JT

1:35:35 "At the same time, there's also something satisfying about that. That it's not the cliche happily ever after." Well, now that you've said this, there's a certain talking point that I'd like to mention. I had been toiling about whether I should even bring it up given how others and I would like you to continue with this franchise, but this statement has made me decide that it's alright. Final Fantasy stories rarely have a "happily ever after" ending. Even going as far back as the very first game. It's something that I really appreciate this franchise, because it makes their stories so much more impactful, interesting, and believable. Now, don't go interpreting this as "every game in this series has everyone die in the end" because that's not necessarily true. For the sake of keeping things discrete, I'm not gonna tell ya where FF16 lies on the bittersweet scale of Final Fantasy endings. Sometimes things are a little more optimistic while other times they ain't. I'll let you see that spectrum for yourselves.

JT

1:30:12 The ending theme that comes in here during the credits with Japanese vocals is titled “Tsuki Wo Miteita” (Moongazing). Its lyrics are similar to those of My Star in that they communicate the story of two lovers who have been separated from each other, and how they will never let go of the bond that they shared. But what’s truly interesting about this song is not so much lyrics, but rather the music video that was produced for it. In the ending of the music video, it’s revealed that the woman in the relationship of the separated lovers is pregnant with two babies. Since this song was not written, performed, or composed by any of FF16’s core music team, it’s completely possible (and honestly likely) that this is not meant to create implications that Jill is also pregnant. I just think it’s food for thought because there’s not necessarily anything that shuts the possibility down completely. It’s also worth noting that in the Japanese version of FF16, Tsuki Wo Miteita plays during the ending scene instead of My Star for whatever credence that adds.

JT

1:25:14 This beautiful yet sorrowful song is named “My Star”. We’ve been hearing its melody play as Jill’s theme throughout this journey. I once made a remark how said melody always does things to me, and now you’ve seen why. It always transports me back to this very moment. Soken has said that out of any of the character themes in this game, he would choose this one as his favorite. Its lyrics communicate the sorrow of a lover who has lost their partner, and how they’ll always treasure them despite never being able to be reunited. I’d like to forward this incredible music vid that someone put together for it. https://youtu.be/sl36kjZBLMw?si=yW_FCh86HcpgQofC Despite how sad the song’s context is, it’s become my go to song for whenever it’s been a long day and I’m trying to unwind and get ready to sleep. There’s just something about it.

JT

I really wish that they scaled up Ultima's level if ya did the DLC. On my first run, I needed damn near all my items to put the guy down. On my second run (where I completed the DLC first), the fight was just laughably easy. Ya'll probably don't mind it bc it just makes it easier to beat Ultima and get your gratification, but for me it's just deflating.

JT

1:14:54 We make fun of games and movies doing these types of lines all the time, but having this here is super on the nose lol. Idgaf if it's cheesier than a Normandy cheese factory, shit like this sticks with me more than any serious dialogue lmao.

JT

1:11:17 The triumphant track that kicks in at this moment, titled “All as One”, is empowering as hell. While it uses the same melody from Clive’s theme “Find the Flame”, the lyrics have changed to match the circumstances of the final battle. While Find the Flame tells the story of one vengeful man isolated by his pain, All as One is a story of people with a shared purpose joining together to bring about a better future. The tone of the instrumentation is also noticeable too. Find the Flame sounds wilder and more unrestrained while All as One feels more focused and collected. A cool little layer to the song that I’ve somehow only noticed until very recently is that if you listen very carefully, you’ll notice that the Final Fantasy Prelude theme faintly comes in throughout the melody. It’s as if the BGM is also declaring that the battle you are witnessing is the beginning of a new world.

JT

1:11:00 Ultima: "Tides unremitting!" Clive: "LEVIATHAN!" Waljas: *cough* *cough* *baby noises*

JT

1:06:56 Yet another one of my favorite game tropes. Bringing back all the abilities you've gained on your journey to overcome the final boss and the final boss fights you with the same type of abilities.

JT

RIP Prince Dion. I remember a couple years back that people were hoping Square Enix would end up going the FF10 or FF13 route and put out a FF16-2 to continue the story, in hopes that Dion would turn out to be alive since the way he died wasn’t “explicit” and also because dragoons don’t take fall damage lol. Yeah, given what’s happened since then I doubt any of that’s happening. The dev team for FF16 disbanded a while back, with Naoki Yoshida (the producer) stating that no plans are made for future FF16 content. Curious to see if the Logos lore book will provide any more insight by Lewis Clarke’s (Dion’s VA) contributions. If it does, I’ll try to remember to share ‘em with ya.

What Will be the next Game that You guys are going to play?

Fabio

Forget Titan Lost, that final blow to Ultima’s face is truly the most Asura’s Wrath coded thing in this game. Clive really hit him with the https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxwZm7HhoVVtDk5lCZtlEkwti-dy1NM8nu?si=yft0HZ4AKBOVdo5i

Can’t believe we’re finally here it only felt like yesterday when you guys barely started but major props to you two for getting through your first FF game!

“You’ve Final’d your last Fantasy, Ultima.”

Shadowpunch13

In the end, I only found Ultima to be an “alright” antagonist. Not the worst villain Final Fantasy has ever had, but certainly not he best either imo. His motivations are a good foil for our main crew and his actions are devious enough to make ya want to kick his shit in. But the problem that me and others seem to have with him is that his archetype just isn’t very “inspired” as far as JRPG series go. Won’t spoil anything, but if ya continue to look into more of ‘em in future journeys I think you’ll find that a story with themes of free will and overcoming fate that ends with people fighting god/godlike entities ain’t gonna sound too unfamiliar.

JT

As you can see, this story’s ending has been very much designed to be open to interpretation. The more I look at it, the more I realize that I genuinely still can’t pin down how I feel about it and I don’t believe I ever will. Which is something that the Final Fantasy fandom and I seem to have in common, because people appear to still be fighting about what it all means even 2 years after release. The biggest point of contention being whether or not Clive survived. Doubt that question will ever have a definitive answer. Now look, I’m not gonna try and act like I’m someone who’s sharp enough to synthesize all existing threads and put together a case as to whether or not Clive is dead or not. What I can tell you is that there is a guy over on YT who’s much more passionate than I am about this, and has made a video explaining why Clive may have lived. His attitude kinda annoys me but he makes a solid argument imo. Though be warned, there are a couple of spoilers for FF7 Crisis Core and FF15 between the 1:27 and 1:44 marks. Do with it what you will. https://youtu.be/K8bWYsVI-aY?si=aUs5QOff3DEGwKlm
