I mean communication is key so an update really isn't too much to ask. In our experience communities can be incredibly generous with their understanding as long as they know you care and are working on it. Then again we do have the best community ever so we may be spoiled a bit. 😊

Bethany and Ken

Thank you so much for all of this information!

Bethany and Ken

haha, so happy we could do that for you!

Bethany and Ken

Thank you for this advice!

Bethany and Ken

Love it when a game does that!

There’s definitely an important story in the game and choices that affect the ending.

It’s funny seeing the earliest trailers because they show a lot of stuff that isn’t in the game. It started off as a kickstarter project of two guy making a game, and you can notice the progression of their supporters as the trailers have more refined music, sound effects, and more nuanced characters. The music in the first couple trailers isn’t even in the game, it was just a placeholder because they hadn’t even hired their composer yet for the game. 10/10 experience, would recommend.

To really put out in perspective. We've been waiting for silksong since 2020. It's so infamous that Xbox in their showcase just had to say it was coming out on the platform to be hyped. The fanbase for hollow knight is incredibly loyal and massive including me! Favorite indie game of all time. Recommend hollow knight lore as it's incredibly in depth and fun by mossbag

Genuinely a beautiful game

Fried T

I second this nomination - the premise sounds cheesy, but the movie is incredible and the music is super catchy!

If Bethany likes the looks of Hollow Knight, I highly suggest she check out Ender Lilies. It's the same genre, beautifully animated, but also not as tight controlling and mechanically demanding as Hollow Knight. It's a very good game to introduce someone to the Metroidvania genre since it has enough depth to give a new player a good taste without burying them in it. I'd say knock out Ender Lilies to cut your teeth, then dive into the even deeper and more expansive game that is Hollow Knight.

WWW Suggestions Posting this on Thursday but who cares. Was gonna have my Metroidvania suggestions be it for the week, but I just finished DK Bananza last evening and can officially declare it as being tied with Clair Obscur for my GOTY this year. I don't believe in the Internet's weird ass ideas of "there can only be one" or that "Keighley's show needs to have my choice". Been looking at more DK vids now that I'm unshackled from Bananza spoilers, and I came across this DK timeline video. I gave ya that one DK lore video over on YT a little while ago and I still think it's worth watching, but this timeline is a lot more cohesive and up to date due to being uploaded post-Bananza. So yeah, perhaps take a look at it only after having played the game. https://youtu.be/TetJf-JIpis?si=ca7hvg_55leH-wBK

I LOVE Hollow Knight, it was my favourite game for a long time, before the release of Elden Ring. Hollow Knight is what's known as a MetroidVania, as in similar to Metroid and Castlevania games - particularly ones after Symphony of the Night. You have a massive interconnected world, but many parts of that world wont be accessible until you've found powers later in the game that'll let you explore further in places you've already been, like a double jump or wall jumping. Hollow Knight is one of the absolute best of the genre, with incredible lore and gameplay. One thing to note is that the character you play as in the first game is not the Hollow Knight. The Hollow Knight is a wholly different character, the player character is just called The Knight, or Ghost, depending on your preference. They're also genderless for complicated lore reasons, so they/them works best. These trailers are great at showing the world you're about to explore, including some crazy late game spoilers, while also showing literally nothing of importance or actual story. But still drawing you in regardless. I'd definitely recommend playing it, and if you don't, the channel Mossbag has some great lore videos, including a great overview video. The story in this game goes deep, and Mossbag is essentially Hollow Knight's Vaati. As for Silksong, it's yet to release despite being revealed in 2019. I was sitting exams when the trailer came out, and now I've been working for over 3 years after finishing college. Crazy how time flies, the community has gone totally bonkers btw, the Hollow Knight subreddit has started doing daily bannings, where people volunteer to be "sacrificed" as a sort of ritual to help the devs, somehow. As I said, bonkers. I wish I could answer some questions you had about Silksong, but for the most part I can't, simply cause I don't have the answers. However, the character you play as in Silksong is Hornet, the Knight's older sister, and a very important character in the original game.

15:25 Ya seem to have gotten somewhat of the wrong idea about Hollow Knight's genre. While it does have 2D platforming elements like Mario, that's just one key component of Metroidvanias (which is Hollow Knight's actual genre). Metroidvanias don't consist of separate levels that you go through linearly, but rather a large interconnected world. The player obtains access to more of the world as they collect more items and abilities. This format of gameplay was popularized by Metroid and Castlevania, hence the name. They tend to be pretty hands off when it comes to telling the player where to go and usually have fairly demanding combat. Wouldn't call it something Bethany would usually play lol. Though now that ya got me on the topic of Metroidvanias, I'd like to introduce ya to some more headliners of this genre I enjoy so much. Give me a moment.

give us mossbag!

Ya'll have no idea what the wait for Silksong has been like. It was initially revealed back in 2019 and we were hyped as hell. Since then it's just been popping up in the most unexpected places with more or less complete radio silence from the devs (Team Cherry). With each and every game presentation like Nintendo Directs, Xbox Showcases, Summer Games Fest, etc there's been a running joke online that we all pretend to get ready for Silksong to be there when we know damn well it's probably not gonna be. Team Cherry's an incredibly small studio (their core team is just 3 - 4 people), so I can understand why the game could be taking so long. Especially factoring in any potential complications that came about during the pandemic. But I will say that not providing any messaging or updates in any form for the past 6 years ain't really justified. There are plenty of small devs that do players the courtesy of giving quick updates and newsletters to keep fans' expectations in check. Now that Silksong has just been in the public eye for so long with little footage of it's progressing, people have likely started to build expectation that are way too high. But hey, it seems like the game's finally arriving this year, so we'll see how things play out. Hopefully the wait will have been worth it. I ain't someone who keeps my expectations rising up year by year bc I have so many things I play in the meantime, but I know a lotta sure as hell don't share the mindset.

JT

Damn I miss Hollow Knight 😌. The lore in this game goes pretty deep but it’s mainly told by the environment and item descriptions like Dark Souls, you’d definitely need a lore video for that

Kami_Psy

I consider Hollow Knight to be a pretty significant game for me when it comes to my journey in becoming more of a core gamer. I remember just stumbling upon it on the eShop back in 2018. I had very little money back then, and I was just a teenager who didn't even really have a full understanding of what an indie game was. Just picked it up on a whim after looking at the trailer. Was completely blown away how much content and quality a game could deliver for such little money. Taught me that a great game could come from just about anywhere, and to always be on the lookout across smaller titles.

JT

Now that the floodgates have opened with the trailers, I can now start giving you lore video recs. There are two main vids that I can give you. The first is by mossbag, the YTer who's more or less THE Hollow Knight lore guy. This vid here is the his biggest and latest summation of the game's lore. He's got quite a few others smaller vids that may or may not be outdated. He also tries to inject some humor into his vids, so perhaps that makes it more suitable for a reaction video. https://youtu.be/0XDiWYFGGqY?si=nT8cgDyiWGzwNALQ The second is this one by Skyrionn, which also tries to cover the whole timeline. Haven't seen it for myself yet, but it's more recent, so it could possibly be more up to date with interpretations, theories, etc. https://youtu.be/ClE8EwpEdGw?si=khEgZVzMd-SxUQq8 Hollow Knight takes the approach that Soulsborne games take in that much of the world's history is told through more indirect means such as NPC dialogue, visual storytelling, and item descriptions. The actual "narrative" isn't the game's focus.

JT

Oh dude no way my rec finally came through. Ya'll might've just had the craziest timing with this if the release date for Silksong gets revealed in tomorrow's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. If all the stars align and it ends up getting shadowdropped by some unholy chance, I will piss my own ass. Edit: Ah no wait I forgot Microsoft (Xbox) already has a hold on that info that they'll be revealing at Gamescom. Nvm Edit 2: Yeah nah it didn't happen lol
