Clair Obscur Playthrough Part 4

Comments

This is a fair bit of feedback, although I think it is a really great sign if a game both satisfies you and leaves you wanting more. Pretty fine line to walk but I feel like Clair Obscur could be the game to nail it.

Bethany and Ken

😟 😢

Bethany and Ken

Thank you for the tip!

Bethany and Ken

Love the range in this, and I think better to have the full version then a shortened one, right?

Bethany and Ken

Mass Effect will be replacing Destiny now that we are more or less caught up with that, though don't worry, there will still be Destiny in the future as more content comes out.

Bethany and Ken

super helpful to know this, thank you! 🙏

Bethany and Ken

We did check out some content for that and it definitely looked interesting so now if there is an easy mode it's worth revisiting. Thank you for letting us know!

Bethany and Ken

I love watching just how excited Ken gets during this

Akio Senpai

It also helps that i recognised her voice actress straight away when i first saw the trailers and started playing her. With the right build she is OP

Mosh Mia

I fluked the win with 1 hp left on my 1st run and im alright with that i think.

Mosh Mia

I know you guys have a ton of games to get through inc the best game trilogy of all time, Mass Effect. But i would recommend giving Lies Of P a go? There is an easy mode now if you want to give it a go? The standard difficulty is tough and even tougher on the dlc - i died multiple times to the final boss 😓🤣. Give it a go!

Mosh Mia

Love your guy’s playthrough but I have two big critiques. You guys are missing more cutscenes every time you skip the option “check up on others”. Also talking to the characters again after having a conversation also sometimes unlocks more dialogue and cutscenes. Don’t be afraid to talk to them two or three more times just to make sure they don’t have anything new to say. I was losing my mind when you choose to “go to sleep” for every playthrough. lol You missed a lot of Gustave’s extra dialogue and cut scenes as well.

Tiger Chill

Good job guys, you’re further l than I got! I know you guys are planning on delving into Mass Effect. Will that be after Genshin or Destiny? Or will that be later on?

As a man of Monoco, I'm obviously gonna be throwing his battle theme into the energy playlist for ya, but it's so good that I just need to give it extra attention lol. You might not have caught it, but the track changes relative to how high Monoco's health is. Someone did us the courtesy of compiling the whole version here: https://youtu.be/P0w6eaDH_SQ?si=acNbg_2yYg2UXgtG The official version of the track on streaming services is about a whole 6 minutes shorter, so by all means, lmk which one I should add to the playlist.

The Dualliste fight is peak btw, just putting that out there.

JT

Last week I had mentioned that there may be a reason ya might wanna travel back to the Gestral Village, and it's related to Monoco. If you go back and talk to Golgra while playing as Monoco, you'll immediately enter a fight against her that'll reward ya with some extra XP and a few polished chroma catalysts. This fight is much easier if you challenge her like ya did last time, so ya won't get one shotted. Could also be a good time to pick up that Roulette pictos I mentioned earlier. That being said, you're only able to use Monoco during the match, so getting more of his abilities is probably something ya wanna do before going up to her. 😅

JT

As you've just learned, Monoco's abilities are linked to defeating enemies as opposed to skill points. While Clair Obscur is not the first RPG to implement a "build your own" party member like this, I find the way it handles Monoco to be on the more intuitive of them. Thus, a good rule of thumb is to just have him in the party whenever ya enter a new area and try him out on every new enemy. He doesn't gain any new abilities from main story bosses, but there are some that he can get from optional bosses so do keep that in mind. He's an all rounder, so the longer ya keep him onboard, the more possible uses he'll be able to have. Healing? Defense buffs? Elemental damage? Big break damage? You name it, there's most likely a Nevron foot for it. Of the enemies seen throughout this playthrough so far, I highly recommend getting the foot of one of a Ramasseur (the little guy ya see here at 16:38). Getting its foot will earn you the "Ramasseur Bonk" ability. If performed while on the Agile Mask, it's guaranteed to fill 20% of any enemy's Break bar, and can also break as well. Might just be one of the easiest methods of breaking an enemy given the move only costs 2 AP.

2:50:46 Now that you've got a full party, I guess I can share with ya who I ended up going with and why: Maelle - I find her playstyle the most fun, and she ends up becoming a real powerhouse down the line as her abilities grow. She's arguably the most powerful party member there is, with some players having constructed builds just with Maelle that allow her to take down superbosses with ease. Lune - As a long time player of turn based RPGs, it just felt wrong to not have a dedicated healer. She's also able to inflict a good array of status effects to enemies that, and I found her mechanics easy enough to understand. Monoco - He gets better the longer you keep him on board, and his gimmick is easy to follow. That and Monoco is Monoco, so there's no further reasoning needed. I did play with Sciel and Verso briefly after each had joined the party, but I stuck with the other three throughout most of my playthrough. Though, this is something I regret doing. I've recently learned through YT guides just how powerful Verso becomes as a damage dealer and how efficient Sciel is as a support character if you invest in their abilities. The two become pretty much unstoppable when you pair them together with the right build.

2:43:53 Well damn. I guess the game coulda did a better job with this tutorial. Probably should've just forced you to use a Gradient Attack so something like this wouldn't happen. So, let me do ya one better: 1) Gradient Attacks (for now) only require one Gradient Charge per use. You can store more charges at once if needed. 2) Using a Gradient Attack does not end a character's turn. Once you've performed it, you're immediately able to follow them up in any way you see fit. Be it another attack or using an item, the choice is yours. This makes them a crucial component of your toolkit, and one that you should never forget to use during battle. 3) Gradient Attacks are the real reward behind continuing to raise the party's relationship levels. In addition to getting more character building, higher relationship levels will grant you access to bigger and better attacks.

JT

2:30:46 YEEESS! HE'S HERE! If ya couldn’t tell by my recent pfp change, this man right here is without question my favorite character in this game. Monoco is just the fucking best in every way. His humor. His jazzy ass battle theme. His design and obtuse abilities. I can go on and on. Ya'll can expect to be seeing him all over the comments here on Patreon for a good while 😉. BTW, he was named after Sandfall Interactive's official happiness manager and office dog. Hence why his battle theme starts blasting with the "BOWOWOW".

JT

2:28:47 Damn, having the full context of this game's world makes areas like this all the more sad.

JT

2:13:11 While you will be getting more follow up with these scenes later down the line, I do think this a good time to discuss that these relationship scenes also happen to contain the only "problem" I have with this game, though mine's a bit different. I would've liked more interaction among the party members that don't just revolve around whoever happens to be the "team leader" during the story. More interactions between Lune and Sciel, Maelle and Lune, etc. Moments that allow there to be more character dynamics between the main cutscenes. Those kinds of moments come around here and there, but not enough imo. Not that that ruined the game for me, because the writing and acting still made me care about these characters. It just prevents me from putting Expedition 33 on the higher end of my favorite RPG casts. They don't feel as "connected" as I'd like 'em to be. Don't know if that's a hot take, but it's mine.

JT

Gotta say Ken, you're able tad more adept with RPG mechanics than I thought you were. Guess I owe ya an apology of sorts 😆. You've said you got a history with turn based games before, yeah? Which games would those happen to be (besides South Park and Clair Obscur)? Ya got me curious.

JT

2:00:21 Well shit, I'd be down for that. I've been holding back talk about stuff like that myself cuz I didn't think you two would care for it. Obviously can't speak for others, but by all means, I invite talk like that.
