Mustang gives new meaning to "Kill it with fire." He makes every D&D sorcerer proud lol

Jennywocky

"I would answer that question with another. How many people were used to create their stone?" This is chilling 😥 "Roy Mustang killed his sister. For that, his Wrath must certainly be felt, heheheheheh.." Feels like this is a big hint regarding things to come!

Bethany and Ken

Very true

Bethany and Ken

No apologies, this information is great, thank you!

Love all of this insight and the fun facts about the VA!

I mean I'm old enough to remember having to wait a week between episodes, but since streaming that feels unimaginable. 😂

Bethany and Ken

Aw.... love that! 🥰

Bethany and Ken

Fun fact, the voice actors for Mustang and Lust are married irl.

Agreed, definitely an incredible episode!! I just realized and I find it funny that Mustang's VA (Travis Willingham) voices a character in another anime (One Piece) who also uses flame powers as well (some of you guys know exactly what I'm talking about). Lmaooooo at the end Bethany, that's how many viewers felt like at the time when this aired back on Adult Swim and imagine having to wait the next Saturday night to watch the next episode lol

J Sal

This episode is fire.

DudeTrue

I'm pretty sure someone may have said it; the voice actors for Lust and Mustang are actually married in real life.

Yeah, this is a fun episode for so many reasons. We learn more about the homunculi, we get a little more information about why Hughes died, Mustang and Hawkeye both prove why they are fan favorite characters, since Mustang is just a straight badass, and Hawkeye shows her determination more than once, first by holding off Gluttony, and then by trying to take Lust out. Al also gets to shine a little since Ed's not around to steal the spotlight, first by recognizing and explaining what Gluttony was (remembering that Mustang and Hawkeye probably haven't been informed about what went down with Greed in Dublith, so this is the first time they're hearing all of this), Al is having to trust Mustang again after having spent the last couple of episodes believing that he killed Lt. Ross and only having just learned from Ling that it was a coverup. Finally, Al stands up to Lust and is determined to protect everyone he can. The amount of emotion in his voice when he talks about being sick of watching people die is heartbreaking. I think the show does very interesting things when Ed's not around. Don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite characters, but in episodes where he either doesn't make an appearance or makes very minimal appearances, I think it creates an interesting perspective change. He's the title character, so it makes sense that for the most part we're kind of locked into his journey / his POV, so his occasional absences create a nice contrast. And now he's coming face to face with the father he hasn't seen for years, and at his mother's grave no less. Remember back to episode 2, Ed snapped at Al when he said Hoenheim wasn't their father anymore because "he didn't even come for Mom's funeral". We'll learn more about Mustang and Hawkeye's past as we go on, so even though she hasn't been a focal point in the show yet, she will continue to make appearances and we will learn about her. But her reaction to believing Mustang died isn't just a subordinate-to-her-commander relationship in a military sense. There's a LOT more going on there. Fun fact about the voice actors: Mustang's VA is married to Lust's VA in real life, so... yeah, that puts new context on that final confrontation between the two of them. Also, Al's VA is a woman in the dubbed version. To achieve the metallic sound in her voice for Al's lines, I believe I read somewhere or heard in an interview that they had her read her lines while speaking into a metal bowl positioned near the microphone. Also also: The VA for Edward is the same VA who played Qrow in RWBY for seasons 3-6, Vic Mignogna. A lot of the RWBY cast also voiced characters in FMAB. Lust's VA was the original Fall Maiden Amber in Volume 3, the narrator who does the introduction / recaps is the same VA who played Blake's father Ghira, Hawkeye's VA is the same VA for Jinn, Mustang's VA voiced an Atlas captain in Season 3, Scar's VA is the same VA as Weiss' butler Klein, May Chang's VA was the White Fang leader Sienna Khan... And not really relevant to this show, but in the original FMA anime, the VA who played Al in that anime was the same VA who plays Oscar Pine in RWBY, and again Ed was voiced by Qrow's VA in that anime too. And last but not least - once you do reach the end of this show, make sure to watch the blooper reel.

The Hommunculus are supposed to be impossible to create, which is why everyone is so shocked to see one. Alchemy isn't really like magic and is more science based which is why you hear the words "equivalent exchange" a lot. You can't create something without giving up something equal in return. Such as when Alphonse created a weapon for himself, in order to do that he had to use a portion of the ground in order to make it. Or Mustang condensing oxygen in the air with a transmuation circle while his gloves create the spark to make his fire. The reason why creating/messing with life is so complicated with Alchemy is because it's hard to judge the scientific value of a human life/soul. This is why a Hommunculus is such a suprise to an alchemist. They are basically artificially created humans so they have all the same parts we do and even have a soul but due to how they were created, they have these special abilities and crazy regeneration. Also the Ouroborus tattoo is more of a symbolic thing that represents immortality. (sorry for the longer post lol)

While I do agree that it is sad that we lost Lust so relatively soon in the show, I think the more important thing we get from this is that the homunculi can be beaten. It would be pretty boring if every time one showed up we had no choice but to run.

Gaston

Oh man this episode! It solidified Mustang as one of my favourite characters in the series and this episode remains one of my all time favourites

Knightlight 1414

Homunculi are believed to be only a concept in alchemy. As they sort of fall adjacent to human transmutation, it's safe to assume that most alchemists do not try to create them. It's why Mustang was so shocked to learn that Gluttony was one. They're supposed to be "impossible" to create, just like bringing back the dead is. That being said, we've seen Greed be boiled down and distilled back into a Philosophers Stone, and now we've seen Lust's. We're 2 out of 7 on homunculi having stones. Maybe the others will or won't have one?

I couldn’t wait for this ep but now I gotta wait till I get back home 😭

Oh it was definitely sexually charged innuendo. It’s *Lust* after all, and the voice actors for her and Mustang are married adding an additional layer to it. That said, it’s absolutely also a statement of establishing dominance, they’re not mutually exclusive. It’s the intertwining of meaning that gives the exchange its layered depth.

Another episode I had to skip commenting on due to it coming out on the 4th, oh well. This is the one that REALLY hits anyway. I’ll start by saying that I relate with Jean Havoc SO HARD. I too am but a slave to the large chesticles. Mustang absolutely proves his badass cred here, showcasing why he’s topped the majority of official character popularity polls. Of course we know that being an alchemist is a scholarly pursuit so anybody who can succeed at it is a highly intelligent individual (yes even Major Armstrong), but his actions against Lust showcase that he isn’t just a “strong fighter” sort of man, but incredibly quick witted. Add in that his brand of alchemy is particularly effective at dealing with the homunculi plus his political machinations interfering with their plans, and it’s not hard to see why he’s their biggest threat. More than his combat effectiveness though, I want to point out how he became so hardened and capable. 2 eps ago I brought up that as the “Hero of the Ishvalan Civil War,” which was just a straight up genocide, he committed horrific war crimes. More of that is touched on here, with him being so intimately familiar with how it feels to completely cremate someone. Clearly these are not pleasant memories for him, yet he still committed these heinous acts regardless. It can make one wonder, why does he seek the highest seat of authority in the country? To become the fuhrer of a military dictatorship in which he participated in unforgivable war crimes he clearly holds no fondness for? On the opposite end we have Riza Hawkeye, his number two, who he has trusted to always have his back. While Mustang is a brutally effective weapon against their enemies, she is not. Against any human threat Hawkeye is quick, efficient, and a tremendous obstacle to overcome. You don’t walk away from a bullet to the brain from the best marksman in the country. Yet against the homunculi, who trivialize her normally lethal skill set, how can she truly protect Mustang’s back? In her shoes I would be feeling woefully inadequate right now. “What are they made of?” Well as agreed explained previously and as Lust reaffirmed here, their bodies are ostensibly human. Apart from their regeneration and unique powers, they are human in every way, which means their abilities come from somehow manipulating the chemical composition of the human body. But now you know more: at their core is a philosopher stone. Not only that, but their regeneration does have a limit—kill them enough times and they will run out of energy and finally stay dead. But how many times does it take? Well remember what the key ingredient is in a philosopher stone? Human. Life. Multiple human lives. The more lives sacrificed the stronger, the more “complete,” the stone. So you ask, how many times does it take to kill them for good? I would answer that question with another. How many people were used to create their stone? As for Jean Havoc, yeah he isn’t in good condition. Since you said your backlog is about a week ahead I’ll consider this on the cusp of possibly not having seen ep21 and will refrain from commenting on his fate. You’ve definitely seen ep20 by now though, so you know that the information about souls and bodies rejecting one another gets discussed there in a big big way. I’m eager to see how the two of you have reacted to Hoenheim’s first interaction with Ed, since it’s, heh, not exactly a warm meeting on both sides. As for why Wrath/King Bradley didn’t show himself to help while maintaining his cover, think about it for a moment. He’s the leader of the country. If he shows himself in any capacity that isn’t to eliminate them as threats, he will be under the obligation to use the full force of his governmental powers to investigate this underground facility and the homunculi. Showing himself at that moment would mean he either has to acknowledge the conspiracy he is a part of and at least pretend to be taking action against it, or kill them, and Lust called Mustang another “potential sacrifice candidate” just like Wrath confirmed for the Elric Brothers and suggested for Izumi. No, it’s much better at this time not to get involved so he doesn’t have to juggle a fake internal investigation on top of everything else. However one thing is certain. Roy Mustang killed his sister. For that, his Wrath must certainly be felt, heheheheheh.

Lol thats funny how you saw the whole “get on your knees” comment as sexual innuendo. I always saw it as establishing complete control or the other because they’re both sadist and have authoritarian qualities lowkey. I didnt think “damn they wanna do the nasty”like huh? 😂😂

Great reaction guys! Lust and her innuendos may be gone, but at least she went out in an explosive climax!
