YES!

Bethany and Ken

There's so much to explore!

Bethany and Ken

Haha, "playing in secret", this makes us sound covert and much cooler then we are 😂

Bethany and Ken

Yes!

Bethany and Ken

Yay, thank you!

Bethany and Ken

👏👏👏

Bethany and Ken

Audio cues for parries... I was so focused on the visual I didn't even consider an audio cue. Will try to catch that going forward, thank you!

Bethany and Ken

😇 😂

4:28:38 My experience with Goblu the first time: "Man the regular battle themes have been pretty good so far. I wonder what the boss themes are gonna be like-" *the track starts popping off at (4:28:43)* https://youtu.be/YMrPQflzcDI?si=E7zsfWT9QYhN3lL2

JT

4:06:03 Now ya see, ya'll put us through some real tests of endurance with some of these moments in your playthroughs, but this shit right here is something else. 😆

JT

2:57:53 This is something that seems to have been one of the few technical issues that has been coming up with this game. The frame rate for the FMV cutscenes caps out at 30 fps for whatever reason, making it jarring when it cuts from/to the higher fps gameplay and throwing off the lip syncing in some places. I happened to use a mod that unlocks said fps cap, but the lip sync still seemed a little off in a few places. Perhaps it'll be something that'll be fixed in a future patch. The devs have been rather quick with their recent patches, so we'll see. EDIT: Did a bit of digging, and it seems that Renoir's VA confirmed that the voice acting process for this game was done in reverse of what is standard. Instead of them voicing lines and a scene being created around those line reads, the VAs watched the scene play out and then voiced it over. So yeah, the reason could be either or.

JT

I think it's kinda funny how Bethany is having an easier time with parries than dodging when dodges have the bigger time window lol. Any attack that can parried can be dodged and vice versa. Dodging is there to help you avoid damage for any attacks that you're having a hard time getting the hang of parrying. But ideally, you'd want to try parrying as many attacks as you can so you can obtain more AP and counterattack enemies.

JT

2:44:54 Something that's rather outstanding about this game is how the flow and timing of line reads are handled in such a way that makes the conversations feel more natural. In a lot of games it feels like characters are just always taking turns talking all the time, which makes sense given that VAs are often recording their lines in separate areas at different times. But moments like this argument between Gustave and Lune where they're talking over each other makes the dialogue just come off as more "authentic" imo, if that makes sense.

JT

Seems ya'll are taking a liking to this game's parry/dodge mechanics. If ya ask me, I think just about every future turn based RPG should try to implement something like 'em. But while such mechanics aren't "common" in this genre, Clair Obscur ain't the first to implement them. The many games across the several different Mario RPG series pretty much all include some type of reaction-based combat. I've compiled some recommendations if ya want to get more acquainted with them. The Mario & Luigi series were my first ever turn based games, and I've loved the genre ever since. JT

1:46:25 Ah hell, there's about to be a lot of controller switching on this journey lmao. This game gives you Pictos quite frequently and characters level up rather quickly.

JT

1:30:09 Really, someone told ya this was open world? Well ya'll have probably figured this out by now, but that ain't true lol. It's got an open ended world map, but most of the areas you're exploring are relatively linear.

JT

38:09 I think ya missed him, but if you look around this area hard enough you'll find that there's a trash can glowing blue. Interact with the trash cans enough times and you'll find out there's a man hiding in there in an attempt to prevent his Gommage. He gives you something for talking to him. Can't remember what tho. The running trash can joke also reminds of an old cult classic SNES JRPG named EarthBound that used the same type of running gag. Wonder if any of the devs happened to be a fan.

JT

Haha terrible haircut

Mosh Mia

Hey, big props for nearly defeating an optional boss. Are y'all on easy, because he one shots on normal. But Beth, way to get the parries down, and the timing. What I've learned as I continue playing is there are some audio cues for parries. This game is all about learning enemy patterns and timing. Both of y'all are doing great for your first JRPG.

Jason Rogue

This game gave me one of ny favorite line in gaming "FUCK THE MISSION"

grimmjow

As Jason says, this game's OST is goated. One of the best I've experienced in a big western developed game in quite some time. Been hearing that Sandfall picked up the composer right off of SoundCloud. Imagine that. Ya'll can bet your asses I'll be adding tracks to my VGM playlists I made for ya btw.

JT

Me playing through this segment: Alright, the trailers made this game look damn gorgeous and hella fun. Taking inspiration from JRPGs are they? Well they better have some banging ass battle themes or else they didn't- "In Lumiere's Name" comes in at (25:14) Ah good, they really DID understand the assignment!

JT

Impressive reflexes on the Lancier.

Jason Rogue

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not here trying to say the these awards don't matter "at all". Getting so much as a nomination can be very beneficial for a game's sales and a studio's reputation. I'm just letting ya know this bc I'm seen far too many people take the GOTY discussion too damn seriously time and time again. That being said, I do wish Clair Obscur nothing but the best during the show this year. Would love for Sandfall to be recognized for their hard work. If this is their FIRST title as a NEW studio, I can only imagine what they'll be able to achieve if they manage to garner more support.

JT

Very interested in experiencing this game’s story a second time through this playthrough. It’s the kind of story that’s had people completely switch up how they perceive some characters upon a second run.

JT

So, you’ve been seeing others and I here in the community make note of how this game is likely going to be a GOTY contender at Geoff Keighley’s TGA this year. You two may be curious as to what info we’ve been using to predict this, so I figured now is as good a time to give you a rundown: The vote for the show’s nominations is determined by two groups. 10% of the vote is determined by the public, while the remaining 90% is determined by a jury made up of over 100 various video game media outlets (i.e. VGC, Gamespot, IGN, etc.). This split is precisely why I highly advise against taking the show’s awards as “objective”. The vote’s only determined by a group of critics from the media (who likely have not played every release within the year) that only make up a small percentage of the millions of gamers across the world. Thus, the best go-to place to get a read on how these critics are received each game is to look at Metacritic, which will assign games a score based on an accumulation of critic reviews. For this year so far, the lineup provided by this link is what we’re working with: https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/all/all/current-year/ Now, it doesn’t just end at what games have the highest score. Games that are to be considered potential nominees must have a high number of reviews behind their score. Entries that only have about 10 – 20 critic reviews are most likely not gonna get nominated. Additionally, if a game is either a re-release or a remaster, it’s most likely not going to be in the running either. The only remakes that manage to get nominated are those which significantly change the game they’ve adapted (i.e. FF7 Remake and RE4 Remake). Based on these conditions, here’s what I’d say we’re looking at for the GOTY nominees this year (based on what’s come out so far): - Clair Obscur Expedition 33 - Blue Prince - Split Fiction - Death Stranding 2 - Monster Hunter Wilds - Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 It’s worth mentioning that Keighley’s Show has recently been “bending” the rules on what gets to be called a GOTY. One example being Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree getting nominated last year despite only being a DLC expansion for a game that came out two years prior. Who the hell knows how things’ll pan out this time.

JT

Since I’m aware that you two have been playing through this game for a few weeks now, I wanted to ask about where ya’ll are at in the story. Just wanted to know so I can get a read of what gameplay advice would be worth bringing up. There’s also some late game optional quests/story content that you two might like to know about when the time is right. If you’re concerned about unintentionally spoiling others in the comments, ya could just DM me about it or put a spoiler warning above the reply.

JT

Yes please play BG3 a game i have fully finished mutiple times lol. Over 600 hours

Mosh Mia

Man i need to finish my playthrough already lol

Mosh Mia

Omg 3 parts of my new favorite game of all time!! That's why y'all have been making all those Exp33 references, you've been playing in secret 😏

Kami_Psy

You guys are never going to play baldurs gate huh?

Moises Martinez

I believe you did miss the kids dressed as gestrals and possibly one more person, but it is a lot to uncover. I originally spent like a good 2 hours vibing to the music and exploring. You missed chroma around the fountain area where you talked to Marie, the sculptor, and Cyril. You also missed lumina colour (I forget the name) when rummaging through the left behind pile. It's not entirely important, but just letting you know exploration is extremely helpful in JRPGs as you can miss out on passive effects, items and money if you are short on chroma.

Jason Rogue

Ah, I see you also missed the mime in Lumiere. It was right in the corner when you were talking to the man in front of the show. Defeating it would have rewarded you with the opening "Lumiere" track, my favorite of the OST.

Jason Rogue

I have been waiting for y'all to play this. Thank you.

Dawson Sepulvado

Ya'll mean as hell for doing this to me while I'm at work 😭. Three parts at once omg (jk, sort of). Once I get home I'm about to go ham.

JT

Also the music is goated.

Jason Rogue

HOLD UP, WHAT IS THIS?? HELL YEAH BORTHER. HOPE YOU ENJOY AND OPEN YOUR EYES TO TURN BASED RPGS. PERSONA IS NEXT Y'ALL. WOOOOOOOO.
