Frieren S1:E3 Full Reaction

This episode showcases just a few more aspects as to why I love this anime so much. It's one of the only shows, in my experience, that actually shows the evolution of magic, and though the fight was short, it gives us the first taste of real combat and shows just how beautiful the art is for it.

Im not sure if anyone has said anything about it, but its like you said Frieren is a very different and more pensive show, up until it's not, if that makes sense. Keep in mind, the fight vs Qual, was only about 1:30-2min worth of the episode and that's with the dialogue added in there, there is so, so much more to come.

This is another example of a trope that Frieren inverts. In most fantasy settings, the older magic is, the better it is. "Ancient magic" is often considered powerful and incomprehensible to modern characters. Frieren approaches magic as being an area of study; that gets better understood and more refined as time goes on. Such that ancient spells which were once inexplicable are now everyday (although that doesn't mean modern mages are stronger than their ancient counterparts; just that magic moves on). Although, to give Qual credit. He was legitimately a genius. He woke up after 80 years, saw defensive spells for the first time, and INSTANTLY worked out its weakness and made a countermeasure to it with his spam attack. If he'd had just a few minutes more to think up a plan, they might not have been able to beat him.
