Super informative, thank you!

It was just a quick minute, but that device the professor gave to Red and Blue. The Pokédex. That's one of the main goals of every Pokémon game. Catch Pokémon. Collect Data from the capture. And either release or do battle with them. And while it's not shown here, Red pretty much just catches them and either releases them if he just wanted the data, or he keeps them as companions for future battles. But that's just talking logically as a character in the world. In terms of the games, it's up to the players if they want to catch and release Pokémon. And with a game where the goal is be the best Pokémon trainer and find one of every Pokémon, most players just keep at least one of each species for the sake of having a nice collection. You can only have 6 Pokémon at a time and the rest get sent to a PC stored as data so you can get them later. Now this is just theory territory since Game Freak never acknowledges it, but you can think of PCs as alternate worlds that Pokémon can live in peacefully. So they can live in a virtual environment that mimics whatever habitat best suits them.

Red is our main protagonist of this short series and the one you play as in Generation 1 of the games. This current design he has is more in line with the remake of Generation 1 (Pokémon Firered & Leafgreen which is a Gen 3 game). He's very much a well-meaning klutz, with a heart of gold. And I believe you will like this simplified journey he will go through. He is also VERY iconic for the franchise. Being the first ever playable character. There's actually one big thing that separates this version of Red and the game version. Red in the games is actually shown to rarely speak. Because he's basically a silent protagonist most JRPGs of the olden days had. You made decisions, and characters responded to you. But you never have any dialogue yourself. They're meant to be self-inserts for the players. It wasn't until a few years later in Gen 2, you could actually battle Red as a secret boss and they don't say anything still. Only just recently in 2019, Pokémon created their own Gacha game called Pokémon Masters, and they finally revealed that Red CAN speak, he just thinks words are unnecessary. Blue is the rival of this story and yes, he's meant to be the insufferable prick that you're meant to not like and take down. Every generation of Pokémon has a character that's meant to be an opposing force you'll repeatedly need to take down on your journey. And with him being the first ever rival in the series, he's also very iconic. His design is actually based on his original game one with a few recolorations. Professor Oak is a researcher, obviously. And just like rivals, every generation has a professor that researches different aspects of Pokémon and is meant to give you your very first one. The fandom likes to call them "Starter Pokémon" and they always comes in these 3 types. Grass 🍃, Fire 🔥, & Water 💧. It's been this way for over 2 decades and so far hasn't stopped being that way. At this point, just assume any characters and Pokémon associated with the first games are iconic. Brock is the very first Gym Leader you'll face in the games. Meant to be the first test so that players will understand type matchups and use the appropriate Pokémon against his Rock types. In the main anime however, he's actually staple character that joins the main character for huge chunk of the early 4 seasons, before he's relegated to guest appearances. And this episode really dropped a very important answer many Pokémon fans had for years. So Red challenged Brock's gym first because it was the closest to his hometown. But what about if a kid starts out in different town with a different gym? Like the 6th gym you visit in-game could be the first one for another kid in the lore of the world. Brock answered that question when he asked Red how many badges he had so far. He had 6 Pokémon available, but he only used 2 since Red is just starting as a Pokémon Trainer and has no badges. So the Gyms scale the difficulty of the battle based on how many Badges the trainers possess.

Before I go into the characters, I want you to think back in Generations, where sometimes in the episode, a child with a Pokémon would appear, but you would never see their eyes/faces. Because they are the protagonists you play as for that generation. And they didn't show it in that series, but you could pick between being a boy or girl ever since Generation 2. Now you might think it's a little unfair that the boy protagonists were used in the episodes with the girls having no appearance. But it's actually the opposite situation. The girl protagonists are so popular, that the boys are only ever used for small cameos like that. I believe it has to do with most of the male character designs being lackluster compared to their female counterparts. Heck, the girl protagonists are actually in the main anime as seasonal buddies of the main character in that show.
