My reading of Winry’s “apple pie” comment is that she is SO devastated by Hughes’ death that she can’t even bear to talk about it directly without completely falling apart – so instead she is diverting to the “apple pie” comment because it’s the closest she can come to verbalizing how she’s feeling. And like Bethany also said, it’s a tangible aspect of what losing Hughes means to her. And she cared so much about him she wanted to do kind things for him, and she didn't get to do that. Hearing Hughes’ wife crying after they left – yeah, wow. She put on a good face for the Elrics as a gift to spare them from blame, but couldn't maintain it once they left. What a gift of love to them, in her time of personal deep grief. I love Barry the Chopper so much, he always cracks me up. Sheska DID react strongly to seeing Focker again – she kinda freaked but kept her face turned away so he wouldn’t see her. She doesn’t know about a shapeshifter and she’s not sure how to process what she just experienced. Soooo.... I was somewhat ahead in my personal watch of FMAB and this week finally just binged the final two seasons because I couldn’t stop myself. This series cares so much about the characters and so many of them (even somewhat minor ones) have meaningful arcs. I’m so glad you’re both watching this and it will be such a treat for you -- it is SO worth the experience!

2025-06-28 19:02:23 +0000 UTCSo true, this episode handled loss in such a powerful way, showcasing it through multiple characters. A personal example of mine, I had a close buddy of mine pass away from cancer 4 years ago, and the way I handled his loss was similar to Hughes’s wife and Winry, like I kept a strong front up, but it got to a point where I couldn’t, and had to “let it all out.” And just like you said Bethany—it’s the little things that make you remember that person is not around, and for me it was playing Mortal Kombat one day and realizing that I wouldn’t get to play it with him again (he LOVED MK), and that’s what hit me the most. A way I got closure from his loss was dedicating the anniversary of his passing with MK content, whether I played the game or watched some of the movies. It’s episodes like these that have such a human element in them, and that makes us feel connected to the characters as if they were people we knew in our personal lives
