100%, I (Bethany) have never subscribed to the modern idea of the paraphrased quote that "blood is thicker than water" and that the family you share DNA with has to be prioritized over the family you choose. I prefer the original full quote, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb".

Teacher (Izumi) is a badass! One thing I love what this episode shows is that even though Ed and Al lost their mom, whom they loved to death, Izumi unironically became their mother figure that replaced her in a way, and unlike their mom, Izumi experienced the same hell that the brothers did, and mentoring aside that's another way she was able to connect with the brothers. What I'm basically saying is family can come from bonds, not always blood, and there is beauty in having shared experiences with someone outside your blood family

Great explanation, I never really thought of that. The lessons and themes this show teaches is insane

Izumi is def one of my favourite characters in the series, her backstory is so tragic but her attitude is awesome

And she will proudly proclaim it to the heavens themselves, too! She is Izumi Curtis! A housewife!!! XD

I wouldn’t even begin trying to guess the motives of Hoenheim (Ed and Al’s father) at this stage. I guarantee you cannot come even close with the information you have at this point. I won’t say anything on the matter regarding if he had a good reason to leave, how he feels about his family, what he’s been up to, etc., just that one of the major themes to this story is “the sins of the father” and how it affects their children. I will have a LOT to say about Hoenheim once you get more revealed about him, and how it relates to my own father abandonment issues. Izumi is a fantastic character, I really love her. It only came up once in this episode, but apart from randomly vomiting blood she has another running gag, that being whenever she does something amazing in front of others, she proudly declares that she is, “a housewife!” You may notice that whenever an alchemist opens the Gate of Truth attempting human transmutation, the price that Truth takes from them has been deeply ironic, like God punishing foolish humans in a manner befitting their sins. First Ed lost his leg as he sought to bring support to his family. Al longed to feel his mother’s embrace, so he lost his physical body and with it the sense of touch. Ed then lost his arm, which he used to reach out for his brother. And now we have Izumi, who wanted nothing more than the child she lost before it was even born, so in return the Truth took away the very organs her body needs to create life, in turn denying her the chance to ever try again. Yes, the Truth is quite the shrewd being. It seems the price you pay for forbidden knowledge is to lose whatever would give that knowledge purpose in the first place. Once you have what you sought, you can’t even use it. That’s why human connection is so important, and another main theme of this story. Knowing what motivates Izumi to take the brothers in is heart wrenching, and in many ways they are able to give her what she always wanted, just as she gives them in return what they want.
