Final Fantasy 16 Playthrough Part 7

Part 7 of our FF16 playthrough.

The sound file for the game got corrupted somehow. You can hear it fine, it just sounds a little off and we aren't sure why. Hopefully just a random one time thing as this hasn't happened before.

Final Fantasy 16 Playthrough Part 7

Comments

Haha, yep, Clive is a badass!

I loved the Kupka fight definitely one of my favorite non-Ifrit fights especially on the harder difficulty and his Eikon Titan is one of the most fun to use in the entire game all I’m going to say is make sure your Royal Guard Timing is on point 😂.

Titan Block with automatic parry is god mode

I love Clive's unapologetic attitude towards Kupka. Not to dip into other FF game's spoiler territory but it's been pretty uncommon where you feel a genuine hatred between the protagonist and an antogonist. Clive full on rolls up, expecting a trap, falls into it, maneuvers his way out, and then walks up to the proverbial big bad and goes "Yeah, I killed your girl. And what, bitch?"

FF16 has what I consider to be a much "busier" setting and narrative compared to a great number of the other mainlines Final Fantasy's, and I believe that's in large part thanks to its creative director, Kazutoyo Maehiro. He's been had a variety of roles across his work on prior FF titles, but this is his first time serving as a creative director on the series. This is important because as far as writing goes, he only served as a main scenario writer for the first two expansions of FF14. FF14 is an MMO RPG, which is a genre that is much more suitable for telling a multi-layered story with all sorts of different factions and politics. While I enjoy FF16, I am also part of the crowd that thinks some of this game's shortcomings with it's design choices can be owed to a majority of the dev team not being too experienced with work on character action games. The "fetch quest" nature of the side missions and the DPS checks in a fair number of the bosses are rather indicative of this as well.

Well, rest assured that you two aren't the only ones who have a hard time keeping up with the history and factions of this game's story. I'm pretty poor at keeping up with those kinds of stories in general (which is why I'm really not super big on Game Of Thrones). My best suggestions would be to either make more use of the active time lore feature as you mentioned yourselves, consult Harpocrates more often, and taking a look over Vivian's "state of the realm" tab. Can't say I've retained "everything" lore-wise, but it at least helped me keep track of the motivations for each character/faction.

2:28:25 Full disclosure, you won't be subjected to Anabella breastfeeding Olivier on screen. This game takes a lot from Game of Thrones, but not "that" much.

Starting to realize that by the time you guys get these breakdowns from me, you've likely already played around with the new abilities a bit. Ah well. I'm too deep in to stop now, even if they ain't really that helpful to ya. Titan’s Abilities Titan Block: Titan’s Eikonic Feat brings out Titan’s arm to block an attack. This block can defend against any regular attack, be it melee or magic. Much like dodging, Clive will perform a Precision Block if you block an attack before it lands, which will deal some damage. Upgrading this move will allow Clive to follow up with up to 3 counterstrikes, the third of which will knock back smaller enemies. However, be careful when using this w/ larger enemies since they won’t stagger from these strikes and can easily swat Clive out of the counter state. This is a very good (and satisfying) defensive option if you can master the timing. It can be used to cancel out of most of Clive’s attacks, and its quick activation allows you block against repeated blow from the same enemy. However, Titan’s fist will break against certain stronger attacks, which will leave you vulnerable for a moment. Raging Fists: A counter in which Clive steps forward and delivers a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure-like flurry of punches. If you time the counter right, time will stop as Clive does his Stand Rush. The flurry of punches can be extended if you keep pressing the input button (R2 + square or triangle) to deal more damage. You can cancel out of this ability with a dodge or Titanic Block should you mistime the counter. This is my favorite of Titan’s optional abilities. Deals solid HP and will damage, especially if you pair it with Ifrit’s Will-O-the-Wykes or Ramuh’s Lightning Rod. The animation and sound design on its precision counter are also super satisfying. Windup: A heavy punch attack from Titan’s fist with a windup period that deals heavy damage to HP. This ability is executed at its best by holding the input button until the gauge hits the red zone. Winding up the punch properly will cause to deal several hits with increased damage and will push back smaller enemies much like Ifrit’s Ignition. You can cancel the windup animation with a dodge or Titanic Block should if you think an enemy will hit you before the gauge hits red. Upgrading this ability will make the red zone larger. Upheaval: Clive slams Titan’s fist into the ground, dealing good damage to HP and will. It has an identical windup mechanic to Windup, so try to hold the input button down until the gauge hits red should you decide to use it. Using this attack on the ground will knock over small enemies in a 360-degree radius, allowing you to follow up with any attack of your choosing. You can also use Upheaval in the air, which will dismiss the windup gauge entirely and deal damage relative to Clive’s height off the ground. This ability isn’t as strong as Windup, but it makes up for that in adaptability. Earthen Fury: Clive performs Titan’s signature attack and sends out a massive rolling earthquake towards enemies that deals high HP damage. While this attack looks impressive, it’s only great against groups of smaller enemies. Small enemies will get knocked back with each wave of the earthquake and suffer the full extent of the damage, but most big enemies/bosses will not face the damage dealt by each wave. Not worth the cost of AP IMO since there are other abilities at your disposal that are just as effective on big and small enemy hordes (i.e. Ifrit’s Ignition or Garuda’s Aerial Blast). Summary: Titan’s abilities are arguably Clive’s best toolkit when it comes to close range combat. Titan Block is the closest thing he has to a shield in this game and moves like Windup or Upheaval will help him close in for follow up attacks. Titan is also comparable to Devil May Cry’s Royal Guard style in that it encourages a high-risk high reward playstyle. Titan’s heavy attacks and counters are only at their best if the player can master the timing on them.

2:15:18 Gotta applaud Hugo for being good with his fists. But unfortunately for him, it seemed that Clive had the upper hand. Guy needs to get a grip. A firmer grasp of the situation.

JT

2:10:20 Well, it wouldn't really be "fire" as much as it is just extremely hot rock (in other words "earth"). If anything, going underground would make it harder to create fire due to the lower amounts of oxygen. Not that that saved Kupka (which is honestly the more pathetic part about this), but if we're gonna try and dunk on him for not being scientific we can at least do it correctly lol.

JT

Y'know replaying this game has helped me realize that I kinda enjoy the fights with semi-primed Dominants more than I do the Eikon vs Eikon battles. I think the Eikon battles are great, don't get me wrong, but I find that their greater use of QTEs and Ifrit's smaller moveset make the action less exciting. Kupka's fight here is one of my favorites of them.

JT

37:07 I'd also like to add onto this bit here by saying that you should also save heavy hitting single shot attacks like Judgment Bolt for when the stagger meter is nearly recovered, since that will be when the damage multiplier is at its highest. The multiplier increases based on the number of hits the enemy takes (maxes out at 1.5x), so using multi-hit attacks first like Ignition (Ifrit's charge attack) should be priority during the stagger period. That's why the big signature Eikon moves like Flames of Rebirth or Aerial Blast are not inherently "better" than less expensive abilities. Since their cooldown periods are so long, it's harder to deal consistent damage both before and after an enemy is staggered if you don't incorporate some of the cheaper abilities.

JT

Oh yeah, so the time that I like to call "faux-E3" season is imminent, meaning there's likely to be a large slew of game announcements/trailers as studios and publishers start to show what they have in store for the holidays. The two big events (that are known to the public) being: Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest 2025: June 6th, 2 PM PT. Don't know if you two are planning on attending this in-person like you did last year, but what I will say is that the lineup of partners for this one is looking extra loaded this year. Xbox Games Showcase/The Outer Worlds 2 Direct: June 8th, 10 AM PT Can't really promise what'll be shown off here (yet), but I imagine there'll be a fair bit of announcements that'd be of interest to you two. Of course, you can always trust that I'll make an effort to point out certain highlights once each of these events have wrapped up.

4:24 There really isn't a "consistent" pronunciation for chocobo, but me and many others tend to say it as "cho-cuh-bow" instead of "chaw-cuh-boh" as characters do in FF16. Like saying cho (rhymes with "show") and then cobo. Cho-cobo.

Spent a bit of time throwing together a couple of video game music playlists yesterday. I categorized them by energetic/upbeat tracks and subdued/relaxing tracks since ya didn't give me any particular genres. No vocals as per your instructions. May add to them down the line. Left out certain OSTs I favor either due to having a higher number of vocal songs and bc I'd rather you hear them for the first time in-game (i.e FF7). So yeah, here ya go: Energy/Work Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7Wq-naHdAIUxb2SZd1ZkFZzj8pa9iTu6&si=SG6Cwb-rHpwVkd5z Calm/Relax Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7Wq-naHdAIW1OzhFT68-hYsXx4oNeKK7&si=omPxsswbIAHDn9pC

Finally met Ben Starr's character in Clair Obscur last week. Can't escape this man.
