Gen 8 introduced Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing, gimmicks where for 3 turns in a battle your Pokemon can grow into a gigantic version of themselves and use more powerful (albeit generic) “Max-” moves that add an added effect to battle, either buffing your team, debuffing your opponent, or altering the weather/terrain. Gigantamaxing is a special variation of Dynamax, exclusive a small group of Pokemon species, and not every member of that species is guaranteed to be capable of doing so, but the DLC allowed you to make so any could. Gigantamaxing not only allowed this Pokemon to grow massively, it also caused their bodies to take on new forms and appearances, and thanks to that are able to use unique “G-Max” Moves that add more variations to the battle (usually unique battle hazards). Galar is the only region capable of Dynamaxing due to the presence of energy from the Legendary Eternatus, thus the reason for this gimmick only being available in Sword and Shield, similar to how Gen 7’s “Z-Moves” were only possible in Alola due to the traditions of the region limiting the use of the gimmick.

"The Fire Starter of this generation. A soccer playing rabbit that can turn pebbles into burning fireballs." 😯⚽️🐰 "And then you get a jumping flaming snowman with a fire spray for a nose instead of a carrot. " 😂⛄️

I would also like to add on to Alex's statement here, because it's something that I've been unsure as to where it should be mentioned. The reason behind the decision to axe the National Pokedex was initially cited as being for the sake of allowing the devs to have more time to focus on creating better animations and visuals for a smaller pool of Pokémon. Let me tell you right now: The presentation, graphics, and performance of mainline Pokémon games that came out during the Switch era have led to high amounts of animosity towards the franchise online that continues to this day. Compared to many other big noteworthy titles on the Switch, Pokémon seems to have been having a hard time keeping up in terms of visuals and performance. Since mainline Pokémon games come out just about every other year, it's not certain as to whether or not if this issue has been a result of such a quick turnaround rate and/or just a plain lack of talent on GameFreak's part. Yet, Pokémon games born from the Switch era have still seen success. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet had so many performance issues and glitches that people began making compilations and posting them to YT. The way people began talking about them would make think that these games were the worst things ever made. However, these two games managed to sell 10 million units within just three days. The second best selling release of the whole series. Things like this have been the strongest indicators that outrage over social media really isn't reflective of the mainstream audience for video games. Pokémon continues to see so much success because it's grown too big to fail. There are no other creature collecting games with online/multi-player features with enough pull to take any meaningful attention away from Pokémon, so the state that newer games release don't have much incentive to change when it comes to polish. Since Pokémon Sword and Shield, there's been a pretty distinct cycle when it comes to new releases. The game gets shown off, people complain about how shitty it looks and runs online, the game comes out, the game does gangbusters anyway bc casual Pokémon fans aren't concerned with such things. Rinse and repeat. Not saying any of this to trash on people who still buy/enjoy Pokémon. Just wanted to bring all this forward to explain to you two why you may find such mixed feelings about this franchise from online discussion.

Top 3 Generation 8 Pokémon: 1. Cinderace 🔥 The Fire Starter of this generation. A soccer playing rabbit that can turn pebbles into burning fireballs. I love their design so much and it got a Gigantamax form that turned their fireball ginormous with a flaming face. 2. Centiskorch 🐛/🔥 A flaming centipede that can turn itself into a heater? Hell yeah I want it on my team! Centipedes are already cool bugs, and flame patterns on its face just add more to its coolness. 3. Galarian Darmanitan ❄️/🔥 The first ever Ice/Fire type. Okay, well technically its base form is just Ice. But it has this other form that only activates when its health is below 50%. And then you get a jumping flaming snowman with a fire spray for a nose instead of a carrot. Funniest Pokémon I’ve seen and I love them.

Generation 8 is the start of a very polarizing era for Pokémon. See, when the games were only on handhelds like the Gameboy, DS, and 3DS, with every new Pokémon they made, it was always a given older Pokémon could be added in as well so that people could always play with their favorites. But once Pokémon got on the switch, they decided to not include EVERY Pokémon anymore. And so it would be up to the developers as to which ones get to be in the new games, and which ones would have to be in the next game. I firmly believe because this happened, a lot of fans really hated this generation so much that a lot of the Pokémon here weren’t given a chance. They’re more loved now, but man, any person who had any sort of liking to this generation when it started would get so much flak.

There are actually a few additional pokemon that were introduced in the DLC. - Galarian Slowpoke, Slowbro, and Slowking which gain the Poison typing. - Kubfu and its evolution, Urshifu and its two forms (Single Strike Style which makes it Dark and Rapid Strike Style which makes it Water) basically Po from Kung Fu Panda. Its style is dependent of which scroll you give Kubfu for it to evolve. - Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres which are Psychic, Fighting, and Dark type respectively instead of the usual Ice, Electric, and Fire types. - Regieleki and Regidrago, two new Regi legendaries that are Electric and Dragon typing - Glastrier and Spectrier, Ice and Ghost type legendary horses based off of several stories such as the horses from the Legend of King Arthur or the horses in the Irish legends of Cú Chulainn. - Calyrex, a Legendary Psychic and Grass Pokemon that looks like an artic hare with a big green crown on its head. Its name appears to be a mix of Latin words, Calyx for bud, and Rex for king. Might also be based off of calvary, because Calyrex is capable of riding either Gastrier or Spectrier. What further makes this Pokemon special is when this Pokemon Dynamaxes, its aura is blue instead of red.

The fossil Pokemon are literal abominations, a scientist in the game literally slaps two fossils together, either a Bird or Fish fossil with a Dino or Drake fossil. The Pokedex states that the four Pokemon are basically living just to suffer. A fish that's head is on backwards, a fish that has it's head on the tip of its tail, a bird half that is forever cold due to its lower half, and a bird top half that's too small for its drake bottom half. Heck, the scientist's name is Cara Liss, a pun on Careless.

Gigantimax is an exclusive gimmick for Gen 8, using Dynamax energy exclusive in the Galar region that was supposedly created by Eternatus. However, only specific Pokemon can Gigantimax and change their form. For other Pokemon, it's simply Dynamax, where your Pokemon just gets bigger without any form change.
