I think this is about as far as I got on a prior viewing of the series before I got distracted... But I do appreciate hearing more about Nicholas, he's an intriguing past figure we've never really gotten to see, yet Weiss considers him a hero. Just as we want to know more about Summer, I wonder about Nicholas and what good memories Weiss has of him. Still more reflections perhaps on change and how firmly rooted perceptions and anxieties can be rooted in someone's psychology. We all have our blind spots and prejudices of some kind, although ultimately I think it matters how we respond to them when they enter our awareness. Weiss definitely has some rooted negative feelings about certain people, yet it's not necessarily reflective of what she will choose or where she will end up. I did find her depiction of Whitley kind of amusing, where he's a pesky subordinate who might be useful from time to time for information, but it's really her father who looms everywhere as the "Eye in the Sky." I can't stop thinking about Cinder a bit, playing out in the main series, in terms of the subconscious anxieties that drive her and how hard actual change is. Cinder has been her own worst enemy (and here Weiss is kind of derailing her own happiness and success, although she never asked to have the anxieties she does), managing to derail her own success time and again because she's a slave to her own embedded feelings of inferiority, leading her to try to repeatedly prove she is the most capable and powerful and scorning the value and help of others. Watts breaks her momentarily in Season 8 (suffering isn't enough, you have to be WORTHY) -- and Cinder rises to the occasion by addressing the needs of her allies for once, learning to work with others... but only until she gets what she wants and then she seems to revert a bit. But does that mean she didn't briefly taste the value of working with others? Long story short, long-term change is hard where underlying anxieties are ingrained, there will be back-sliding, and it will take continual effort to make actual permanent progress. I think this series is addressing that for Weiss, where she changed (seemingly) more quickly in the main series, where here we are seeing that it's an ongoing process and even positive steps with less than pure motivations can still be helpful to inch forward and might be more realistic.

This was essentially supposed to be a recon mission to get a better understanding of Weiss' nightmare. Jaune's was more simple since they caught it quicker and his aura is still underdeveloped so it didn't get to build some big dream world. Weiss got infected with the nightmare the same day Jaune did but it took its time to bury "deep into her heart" so her nightmare is extra crazy. Yang and Blake have stayed behind so that they can be ready to fight when the time is right after Ruby has gotten as much info as possible. Don't judge Weiss too hardly just yet. Jaune's nightmare threw all of his insecurities in his face so it would stand to reason that Weiss' journey wouldn't be much better since it is a nightmare not a dream. We all know from the original show who she eventually turns into, if she really wanted to be a horrible dictator then this wouldn't have been her nightmare. There are a lot of layers going on with her personality and it makes this such a deep show in my opinion. Also I think it is cool how much attention they are giving to Weiss' grandfather, Nicholas Schnee, since he wasn't mentioned too much in the original show outside of the World or Remnant episode where they talked about how he was a great man who risked his life to find new depositories of dust in the deep mountains of Atlas and he worked in the mines himself along with he other workers. He eventually passed on the company to Jacque when he married Nicholas' daughter Willow because Jacque was more business savvy than Willow and pretended to be a good man. It was Jacque who imposed the darker businesses practices after Nicholas was out of the picture. He passed away before the show started, something that is mentioned in the original show and in one of Weiss' songs "Path to Isolation" with the opening lines "It starts with the unexpected loss of something dear". Weiss was really close with her grandfather and you can see it in the way she tries to hold herself to HIS standard, not her father's by saying in volume 9 that she is the "Granddaughter of a hero and the daughter of a villain". I'm really glad they are giving more attention to her familial connection since that is a big part of Weiss.
