The Legend of Korra S4:E13 Full Reaction

It's been one hell of a ride, I still stand by that series is really well done for a younger audience. However it has a lot in there for older people, the creators at the time said they wanted it to grow with the original fans. We can only hope with the new show that continues whenever we get there. As you said you have a movie coming (maybe next year) as well for a small view of the in between times with the Aang team much older. As others mentioned above the comics do well to bridge these shows and even help provide some epilogue to both of the shows. Small details, like I saw above, how they wanted to explore Korra and Asami as a couple. I think the villains are very well written to help explore various social issues but it just always felt too rushed for each season. I think that’s why season 2 gets so much hate, because we get a solid 5 minutes of “Dark Avatar” which could have a been an extremely interesting idea that just gets tossed aside now. Onto some bigger and better things, keep up the good works guys. The Avatar IP is what had be join the patreon in the first place and now I’m here to stay.

"Korra walked so others could run"... well put! And even though the creators couldn't lean into the romance as much as they wanted to, it is important that it happened at all and paved the way for future representation.

Bethany and Ken

Yeah, now knowing this we are super happy for Korra and Asami, just mentioned the "girls' trip" because their romance was so downplayed that it felt more like a platonic friendship. Thankfully, as a society we've made some progress where a romance between two women can be more obvious, so to see it so subtle made it so we didn't know it was there, but we also weren't taking into account when this aired.

Bethany and Ken

That is so disappointing to hear about the executives but I am glad the creators put in what they could to stay true to their story. And thanks for sharing your top 5's with us! Love Asami for MVP 👏

Bethany and Ken

Definitely went over our heads that Korra and Asami are an item. They seemed to be portrayed as just a platonic friendship rather than romantic (didn't notice a lot of flirting or sexual tension) so I wonder why the show creators didn't lean into their attraction more? Either way if they are an item and happy together then we are happy for them! 😍

Bethany and Ken

As other people have mentioned, Korra and Asami are now together but you really don't fully see that unless you read the comics. They also make a joke about how both of Mako's exes get together lol. And it is also revealed that Kya (Tenzin and Bumi's sister) is interested in women too. It has been a bit since I read that comic so I don't remember if she is a lesbian or bisexual like Korra and Asami or if the ever even put a label on it, I DO remember that that was part of what Tenzin meant in season 2 when he said Kya traveled the world to "find herself". Unfortunately you don't get to see much LGBT+ representation in this show, but some of the people who worked on this and ATLA also worked on Voltron: Legendary Defender and the Dragon Prince. In VLD you get to see a bit more representation and in TDP you see a LOT more so its nice to see the evolution of their shows over the years and how they've tried to learn from the things they couldn't do or didn't do well before. Supposedly the next Avatar instillations, the Aang movie and Avatar: Seven Havens, should be released in 2026 and 2027 respectively. Whenever they do get released I look forward to continuing the Avatar world journey with you guys especially since it will be new for all of us and we'll all be reacting to it together. Those conversations are going to be epic lol.

"Get her Korra." Amazing that, on the final episode of the series, I forget for a second that's her name and thought, "Oh, my dog?" I just woke up from a nap, brain still rebooting. *Sees Kuvira bending the liquid metal balls* Huh...Metalbender vs T-1000. Sounds like an interesting matchup. OH! Toph for Mortal Kombat! She'd love it! "Let's have the vines play with you." Bethany's sadism is showing. Sweet. "Do we have to give the suits back?" Ken would totally call dibs and try to sneak one home. Would you have EVER predicted that you'd be hyped to end on a Varrick wedding? I'm curious if y'all remember that Wolfbat Pro-Bender jerk as the one playing on stage. And there it is. While it's never been officially confirmed (though Bryan Konietzko kinda/sorta hinted at it a few years ago), this is widely theorized to be why Nickelodeon Executives kept screwing the show over more and more; Homosexuality. Bryan said that he'd been trying to get the Korrasami ship to set sail since Season 2, and you can definitely see the moments they were trying to push ever since back then, but Nickelodeon would just NOT allow him to make it canon on-screen. Remember, this aired in 2014, a year before gay marriage would be legalized in the US, so censorship of homosexuality was immensely bigger than it is now. There are younger people who watch it today and claim that it's bad queer representation, but the fact that they even got that final romantic stare at the end is huge and would help pave the way for representation in children's media (such as Steven Universe and Owl House...two other shows that would be screwed over by executives for the same thing). It's a shame that they didn't get to be as developed as the creators and audience would've liked, but at least we got it at all, and they got to be more open in the comics that would come out years later. "It turned her into this person who she is; being very fearful, therefore, more hateful, and in need of power and control." Oh damn, Bethany just threw that Yoda wisdom at Kuvira. For my Season 4 Top 5: 5. Bolin. He's my boy, still, and I think he had to go through the shakiest wakeup call out of anyone. Genuinely good guy with his heart in the right place, but is blinded by that desire to help people that he doesn't realize that he's on the wrong side. 4. Korra. Our girl went through so much and is genuinely a great representation of someone having to overcome their past trauma, not only in the poison, but in facing Zaheer (shoutouts to therapist Zaheer) and facing herself, both in terms of her inner demon and the version of her she saw in Kuvira. 3. Varrick/Zhu Li. Arguably the most important comedic relief characters in history, second only to Sokka. I do agree with the asterisk next to his name, but I do believe that they get more equal billing, especially for Zhu Li's deception of Kuvira. 2. Asami. Poor girl didn't get as much screentime this season, but what she got was so important. She was the one connection Korra had to civilization while healing and was her emotional rock through the season after she returned. When she wasn't with Korra, we saw her getting the very-much-needed closure with her father, only to have it capped off with her father saving her life. While Korra may have gone through the most between seasons, Asami definitely went through the most during the season. 1. Toph. Honestly, I was at the ready to put her here without question, but my cases for the others made me doubt for a moment. However, like you guys said, she was always majorly impacting the journeys of the core characters, be it Korra, Su, Lin, or Kuvira. She got to be a badass granny in every scene she was in while dropping Iroh levels of wisdom on all the youngsters. Not much screentime, but what screentime she got was perfectly utilized. Top 5 for the entire show, ok... 5. Korra. I honestly find it a shame that there are so many out there who don't seem to like Korra. I, personally, thoroughly appreciate how, as an Avatar, she was practically the opposite of Aang. She was excited to the be the Avatar, she spent most of her life learning all but air and spirituality, she was extremely hotheaded, practically the antithesis of Aang's character. Watching her go through so much, arguably more than Aang had to go through (save for the loss of 100 years) get humbled, lose her bending, be tricked and betrayed by multiple authority figures, even having basically everything she was proud of such as her bending and physical prowess ripped away from her, all this to flesh out her out as such a deeply intriguing character and become...honestly, she may be in my top 5 of animated series protagonists of all time. 4. Varrick/Zhu Li. Again, I have to give it a package deal, because I feel like, even in season 2, a lot of what Varrick does wouldn't land as well without Zhu Li to work off of. That said, kudos to the writers for taking a silly comedic-yet-sorta-evil character and turning him into one of the best characters of the show. Varrick learned a good deal of humility and Zhu Li learned more confidence and standing up for herself. These two were just stellar in every appearance and only got better as the show went on. The fact that the show ENDED on their wedding is a testament to how important these two were. 3. Tenzin. While he may be no Iroh, our wise elder deserves so much praise. I like that we got to see him in season 1 as the hardheaded mentor, despite being an airbender, that had to ease up for the sake of Korra's training, only to turn around in season 2 and learn just how human he is. Seeing him interact with his siblings while learning just how much he'd be looking at his father through rose-colored glasses was great, and I feel like, had the show been a darker one, we might've explored his inner conflict with who he thought his father was vs who he actually was. I love getting to see a show have their elderly characters still learn just as many lessons as their younger characters, and I feel like Tenzin is a great example of that done well. 2. Bolin. Mah Boi! I think we can all agree that Bolin had the most versatile journey throughout the show. Pro-bender to Mover Star to...naive fascist supporter...to major player in taking down a fascist regime. Honestly, I think I have to give credit to the writers in the aspect of Bolin being the most emotional character. He's a burly dude, but I think he may have cried and worn his heart on his sleeve more than anyone else. I'm not saying I liked seeing him cry, but the fact that he's such a pure guy that you never have to guess what he's thinking, and how sweet he is to the people in his life, be they romantic, platonic...Eska, he's always sincere and wants to do the right thing. Plus, the fact that he managed to unlock the even more rare Lavabending is a major win for him. 1. Asami. Over the years, I've seen more and more posts claiming Asami to be MVP of the show. Now, having watch through it for the first time since it aired alongside you guys, I can say that I get it. Far and away the smartest character and, despite the shit she went through, still a very understanding character. She was cheated on by Mako and didn't kill him; her father betrayed everything she believed in and she didn't kill him, Varrick betrayed her and nearly destroyed her entire company and she didn't kill him. She became, like I said, a huge emotional rock for Korra, always being supportive whenever Korra was stressed or self-doubting, and was more than capable of kicking ass alongside her. Asami is the non-bender of the group and I feel like we got to see her show off her CQC skills alongside Korra than anyone else in Team Avatar. She has the resources that, let's face it, the team would've been screwed on multiple occasions without. She even got closure that I feel most characters of any media don't get; she actually had the villain father that she took the time, over a long period of time, to forgive. If you had asked me at the start of your reactions who my favorite character was, I doubt Asami would've been in my top 5. After rewatching however, carefully analyzing her character (including her interactions with Korra from Season 2 onward, knowing that Bryan was trying to write them into a romantic relationship), I can honestly say that she grew to be my favorite of the show. "Captivated by you." Oh damn, yeah, I didn't even mention the fact that Asami is f***ing gorgeous. Actually, I really love the aesthetic of the Korrasami ship; Tall Bombshell x Buff Tomboy. Oh god! Ken mentioned her during his talk about Tenzin and I realized that I completely forgot Jinora. I...if you had asked me at the start of your reaction, I would've easily put her in my top 5, maybe even top 2. Now, though...oh god, is she only at 6? Did I bump my girl down to 6? She's a genuinely solid character and I loved seeing her grow into a master airbender, both with her bending and her spirituality. I think it's close, but Korra does barely win out as far as favoritism goes. Bummer. Well, Jinora gets a very strong 6th place, even though I feel bad about it. So glad you guys enjoyed this show. There are, I feel, too many who bash it and hate on it because it's too different from Avatar. Seeing you two take it as it is and enjoy it on its own merit feels really good. I likely won't be as in-depth with FMA as I was with this, but I do hope you guys enjoy that as well, nonetheless.

Gonna miss the show but look forward to the stuff coming in the future as always

You talk about the big relationship at the end being between Verrick and Zhu Li, but relegate Korra and Asami to going on a “girl’s trip?” Korra and Asami getting together was something I had been hoping for since season 2, and picked up on the signs in season 3, so when it happens at the very end of the series finale I was incredibly happy. Unfortunately due to the era the show was still airing, Nickelodeon’s concerns over media watchdogs, etc., they couldn’t outright say it and shove it in your face, but yes that final shot of them holding hands face to face in the light of the spirit portal as beams intertwine is meant to indicate they are officially a couple (confirmed by the creators within hours of the episode airing, and shown more explicitly in the follow up comics).

Hell Yeah Gaming

Fully caught up, I'm sure you heard about the new Avatar show coming in the future. The rocky nature between the creators and production studio was rough with stories especially at the first 2 seasons. I wonder how it would have turned out if they were able to have a full plan from the start. Relationships in the Avatar series was always a rough spot even in The Last Airbender, but it was more focused upon in the first two seasons of Korra. It's fitting that the relationships with the least screen time are fondly looked upon. Speaking of that. I'm sure others will mention this but Korra and Asami ended up together in the end of the show. Due the the time of when this show came out they couldn't really do their relationship like others tho modern shows do credit Korra for walking so the others could run. I don't know if it's the first but it certainly has an impact. Anyway glad to have watched your reactions and discussions. I definitely think season 3 and 4 are the better seasons
