It made sense why the previous Emperor became who he was but all I could think with him was how pathetic he was and only felt contempt. The writing is incredible.

Like Maomao said, the irony is so real, as it reflects how fucked up the situation is. In her effort to protect her child, she became an extreme helicopter parent that scarred him, which lead to his disgusting pedophilia. Tragic. As they say, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. And they brought up the Jinshi thing being switched at birth again, which goes back to the whole Consort Ah-duo in season 1. I guess the Empress Dowager knew about that too but still cared for him tenderly regardless, in her own strict way.
