I think the "logical" reason behind exiling Will was probably because if Will had any children, they would inherit the throne. Will was still the king behind the king, and the mother didn't like that state of things and was waiting for the right moment to convince her son that it was in the kingdom's best interests to stop seeing Will. All this hinges on the fact that the mother stated in the flashback that she was an unmarried low-rank noble, so I think Will's kids would be the rightful heirs. Next, we'll discover that Grandpa Will is secretly Alicia's father, and her current father has no idea or knows and is somehow indebted to Will. I see many opportunities to really GoT this.

As what he says is that he is the long lost older siblings of the king. Where he had great talents for magic as a boy before losing it all in an accident. Then also having him being exile in a political scheme by his step mother. And dump off in a village without eyes to remove him from the political landscape. That is the opposite of having a boring history to tell of your life lol

She was afraid that her son could be dethrone if he would manage to get ride of the kingdom oppression of non magic users. Which is what you see in fantasy stories like GoT. Where you have the wife/mother trying to remove threats to their children’s inheritance
