This episode might have the first glimmer of hope for Falin. The catgirl chimera has retained her humanity, so maybe Falin might can to. I might actually be that Falin resurfaced during the fight and recognized Laios.
Also I think that Laios had a really sad upbringing, his family and his friend all seems to tell him that he won’t amount to anything. Reminds me of the last episode of the train anime but without the hope for a redemption arc.
That could also be why his dream is so empty, he is totally beaten down.
Great episode, loved the black and white dream sequence.

I love your theory. I'm adopting it as my headcanon.

The OST that played when the golden grimoire appeared was amazing, AND incredibly fitting.
Manga readers will understand. It gave me chills.

One more thing, the "mighty servant" that Laios summoned was actually hinted at in one of the first few episodes. He drew a painting of the "strongest monster" he could think of, which basically looked like the thing shown here.

So, I saw you talk about the mandrakes at the beginning of the episode and it reminded me of a kind of head-canon that I thought up about those.
Remember, hardly anything in this show is actually related to "because magic". Most stuff is written so that it follows logic and reasoning.
With that said, the mandrakes that Marcille harvested intact (the ones that actually screamed) taste better than the ones where the head is chopped off.
My view of this is that it happens due to biological and/or chemical reasons.
We can assume that mandrakes are not filled to bursting with magical essence, but are instead naturally occuring products, that still manage to create these dangerous screams. I'd posit that the Mandrake carries various chemicals that mix together when introduced to oxygen - as happens when they get pulled out of the ground. These chemicals then produce a large volume of air that leaves the mandrake through the mouth-like opening, with said opening transforming the escaping gas into a specific sound that disrupts the brainwaves of creatures in proximity.
By letting it scream, these chemicals get used up and stop affecting the taste.
I know, super long post for something I'd just thought up, but I'd like to think there's more to it than just "they scream when pulled out" and "they taste better that way".
