2024-02-29 22:04:44 +0000 UTCI think this one suffered more from us not being Japanese and being less able to immediately recognize characters based upon Japanese names. A lot of these characters (like the Android girl who beat the time stopping guy to death) were introduced in a single scene so we've only just read their name a single time. I don't know about the rest of you, but I tend to subconsciously ignore most Japanese name introductions in anime unless it is a major character (in which case they will usually say the name many many times) because I'm too busy reading and processing the subtitles. If I was just listening in Japanese to a native broadcast it would probably be easier to read and understand the name placards. As a foreigner, even if unintentional, it's harder to tell Japanese names apart versus Western names (it would be much easier for me if the characters were named things like Steve Sanders or Bill Jackson) just due to sheer familiarity. Even with big casts, I'm sure it is easier for Japanese people to keep them straight in their mind.
