I've watched many reactions to this anime and many did realize that he's a chuunibyo- 8th grade, one eye covered, has weird fantasies, these are all symptoms for a chuuni character.

He has these dark thoughts but then whenever she or his classmates are in trouble he helps them out secretly. It's one of these shows where actions speak louder than words.
