Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

Beth is short for Elizabeth

Rich Plumb

She did an amazing job. We feel like older beth is definitely the same person and younger beth

Absolutely ♥ this series! One of the best shows ever made!

Bekka NoyB

Really cool that you're giving this show a shot, unlike most reaction channels. I enjoyed rewatching this first episode with you. Also, shoutout to Isla Johnston for her amazing performance as 9yo Beth. Tough role for a child actor, but she really sold this pilot episode imo.

Gladyx

My first time watching this series and the 1st episode was very good. I've played chess many times so this series will keep me intrigued. And Jolene, it took me most of the episode to realize that she also played Reva in the Kenobi series. Looking forward to the next one.

David Cansler

I don’t think enough reactors give this show a chance. It’s amazing.

MJ Eid

The choking during the intro was caused by the Tottenham shirt.

Has someone who was inspired to start playing chess on chess.com when I first watched this show and love playing chess ever since, it was nice to hear that you guys had played a little bit before and may revisit it thanks to this series. As you mentioned in the post discussion, the show is anchored around chess as a key element, but the show is about much more than chess. Excited that you guys are looking forward to the show.

I'm a massive chess nerd, so any chess questions you have I'll try to answer them for you 😅 Here's your starter pack: -White always goes first. -When Sheeble told her to resign, it's because she lost her queen, which is by far the most valuable piece on the board, so you're basically doomed. If you're in an almost certain losing position, it's considered etiquette to resign rather than waste everyone's time continuing a game you most definitely won't win. -The best players (grand masters) tend to become veryyy good at a young age, like Beth, and can visualise the game easily in their minds like she does. -In the 60's, Chess was a very big deal, particularly between the US and Soviet Russia. Being political enemies, the game was treated as a d*ck measuring contest between the two nations 😂 Loved the reaction, as always!

This is such a great series. Pretty psyched to watch it again.

John Neiberger

Did not know this show shared one of the people that worked on Minority Report. Awesome.

Some interesting info: In the Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit," the fictional drug that Beth Harmon takes is called "Xanzolam. It is not a real drug, but is likely based on tranquilizers such as Librium (chlordiazepoxide) which was a popular drug in the 1960s for treating insomnia or anxiety. with high potential for drug abuse from taking over extended periods of time, or Valium (diazepam). Both were commonly prescribed in the 50's and 60s, the time period in which the series is set. These drugs are benzodiazepines that have sedative and hypnotic effects.

I played chess only a few times in my life. I had trouble thinking ahead. It is different being able to study chess and learn different moves, but being able to visualize different moves is really interesting. Sad about the drugs she go involved with as a result of being in the orphanage. Taking her off medication they hard her on without tapering is dangerous. She could have had seizures with the withdrawals. I really find it intriguing how well she excelled. Really hard going with the loss of her parents. Mr. Scheibel is a custodian which is the same as a janitor. When I was growing up we called them that in the US. It is really crazy how many drugs were given to people before they were illegal. LSD is one.

Oh man, it's o nice to be watching a new series with you guys! Totally agree, never thought I would like a chess show, but absolutely love it!!

Spartan V Pudgey chess livestream…when???

Tbag917

Spartan is correct in the use of tranquilizers in episode 1. The time period of episode 1 is the 1950s and as experts better understood the science, they made changes to managing care. It is interesting to think about the motivation for something or someone, especially in earlier time periods. There are things we think we would NEVER do, but if we were in those times, we surely would. Interesting that the same thing that might be considered cruel or malice today could have been considered benevolent or supportive in an earlier time. Great reaction guys!

Thanks for sharing your reactions to "The Queen's Gambit". I enjoyed watching your first time viewing. The director/screenwriter, Scott Frank, adapted it from a novel. Years ago, he co-screenwrote an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's story that became a Spielberg film, "Minority Report". What we learned so far about Beth's life before the orphanage is that her mother, Alice Harmon, was once an author with a phd in advanced mathematics. She was likely a university instructor or professor but I may have missed that part. There may be a correlation between mathematics and the ability for some people to play chess very well. Beth's mom exhibited signs of mental illness that was getting worse over time - irrational behavior, moving from place to place, burning her belongings for reasons only known to her, etc.

Imagine me, knowing absolutely nothing about chess, falling in love with this show. Like most people, when I heard it was about chess, I didn’t really pay much attention. But once you start watching, you realize it’s so much more than the game! The whole story is just so captivating. I’m so glad you guys enjoyed the first episode too and can’t wait for the next ones!
