So Okinawa is where the movie hacksaw ridge takes place. Yall should watch that if you havent. That follows the life of a true legend.

MJ Eid

They basically considered the Okinawians to not be "true" Japanese. =(

John wasnt on Omaha Beach, he was sent to Iwo Jima, D-Day is the name they give to every amphibious assault. There was D-Day, the one everyone thinks about and then there was the D-Days on every island the Marines had to take. Also IRL John died to a mortar blast, not being shot, but it makes it look better on screen to die by a bullet. On Okinawa, it rained for a month straight. The mud was everything and sometimes chest deep, meaning tanks and vehicles got stuck, so the marines had to unload their supplies and move them physically up ridges and cliffs to their positions. Sledge mentioned in his memoir that it was the most hes ever been that exhausted, while still fighting. In Terms of them picking on Peck, He represents the replacement and drafted marines as a whole. It was like that in every theater of war, but particularly so in the Pacific. You also have to remember that the next step was invading the Japanese homeland, most marines knew that. So hearing about the bombs and then the surrender, it was a huge relief. U.S. intelligence estimated 1 million casualties taking the homeland so they opted for the bombs.

The japs weren't shooting their own, they were shooting Okinawians
