The Pacific Episode 8 Reaction

Iwo Jima was brutal on the Marines. The only battle where US Marines' casualties (killed and wounded) totalled more than the Japanese.

Here it is johns return and well death, historically how he died has been up to debate, most seem to agree is was shrapnel. Hes one of the few marines awarded both the MOH and the navy cross (second highest award for marines) And he died on the 1st day of a 30 day campaign on iwo jima. If you want to see more about that battle i highly recommend the movies “flags of father’s” an American perspective of the famous flag raising picture and the Japanese perspective with “letters from Iwo Jima” showing the preparation and later how they defended the island. For the captain’s remark about Tarawa is due to it being small island like pav vua but due to snipers and ineffective naval bombing the Japanese positions lead to higher casualties on the marines then ever before (at last at the time 1943) and was one of the first battles were combat footage was shown to the public causing an out cry of the losses (alot of battle footage you see from the Pacific is from tarawa) But today john basilone is considered an American legend/hero to the marine crop and still remembered to this day as 2024 USS John Basilone DDG 122 was commissioned and is in active service with the US navy, the highway to Camp Pendleton bears his name, and his hometown honors him every year with a parade.
