I don’t think the Japanese army gave a fuck about their own civilians in a war zone

C. J. Ramirez

The baby part was so crazy like they actually did this to civilians

C. J. Ramirez

So add some more context, when sledge is holding the old woman in real life he ran out to find a corpsman (medic) to help her but by the time he returned another marine had already mercy killed her. But yeah overall pretty accurate episode on how the fighting went on Okinawa, it was a joint invasion by both army and marines, the marines had advanced north of the island meeting little resistance (the Japanese army had decided to defend the southern part of the island) the army had the the hardest fighting at first hence why at the beginning of the episode you see them relieving them. To add something the people of Okinawa weren’t considered proper “Japanese” heance why the soldiers had no problem using them as forced labor, cannon fodder, or shields because they were second class citizens. So when the other were giving cathy shit snd found out he was drafted that made them think less of him is due to the fact that before the war the marine corps was the smallest branch but they only took volunteers, much like the airborne they only wanted the best and most dedicated because as the saying goes “the few, the proud, the marines” but during WW2 the corp needed more men so they started drafting them meaning for about 30 years the marines lost this spirit it wasn’t till after Vietnam did the marines return to a volunteer force. At the end those are B-29 super fortress (not a jet but regular propeller aircraft) one of the biggest bombers of the war, they appeared to be bombing the Japanese mainland

As far as US troops are concerned yes. This is part of why I am mad that HBO cut out the interviews with the men that are at the beginning of each episode. They go into this a bit more and it better explains the conditions. Only way you can watch them now is from youtube videos that compiled them or the actual disc set. Meanwhile Band of Brothers still has theirs integrated. So silly.

SuddenImpulse

It was so fun that the Marines did it every time they invaded a new island, shame the Army only did it once

Sharky

@JoeySampson They have all of them together in one video on youtube. S&P are aware of it, not sure if they plan to watch or react to it however. Yes it seems they cut them out of The Pacific for streaming on everything. Only way to get them is watching the youtube uploads of them or getting the disc version.

Yeah cause storming the beaches of Normandy sounds like fun!

Jasper

I feel like they really missed out bc those original intros with the maps/Hanks narration/WW2 marine vet interviews were essential and provided context for each episode. They were part of the original airing; sux that they’ve been cut out.

Rose

I wish they had been able to watch the version with the summaries given by Tom Hanks at the beginning of each episode, along with interviews with the veterans. It would have made the entire series so much clearer for Spartan and Pudgey. Oh well.

Joey Sampson

Agreed.

D-Day was a coded designation used for the day of any important invasion or military operation. The invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 was not the only D-Day of World War II. Every amphibious assault - including those in the Pacific, in North Africa, and in Sicily and Italy - had its own D-Day. I highly recommend Ken Burns’ “The War,” which is an outstanding docuseries that also features two of the marines shown in “The Pacific.” Both educational and fascinating look into the lives of those on the front lines and home front from an American perspective.

Rose

The boys in the Pacific had it a lot worse than the ones in Europe.

Paul De'Armond

Thing with some guys being jerks to replacements is that you have to handle that yourself. Snafu punks cathy in the beginning, took his new pancho. If you are dumb enough to just give away your new equipment as soon as you ship out, thats on you. If you're mad that you got punked and don't want to look weak, you take your pancho back from who took it. Soldiers/Marines that are in the same unit physically fight for any number of reasons all the time, back when I was in it was called, "wall to wall counseling". Ultimately you cant be punked and just take it as a new guy, you gotta show you got some guts. And if YOU get f'd by one squadmate, you dont screw over the squad to right your wrong, because you dont want to stand up for yourself. Snafu doesnt have to ride him so hard, but hes also burnt out like crazy from war.

To clarify further for S&P: Normandy beach invasion was June 1944 not 1945. Guessing that was a typo. U.S. Marines invaded Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945, after months of naval and air bombardment. The Japanese defenders of the island were dug into bunkers deep within the volcanic rocks. Approximately 70,000 U.S. Marines and 18,000 Japanese soldiers took part in the battle. On the Allied side, 6,821 dead 19,217 wounded. 18,00 KIA/MIA on Japanese side. Iwo Jima battle ended March 26, 1945. Considered one of the most brutal. Hitlers death was April 1945. Germany surrendered to the Allies on May 7, 1945 August 6th and 9th, 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese. World War II officially ended on September 2, 1945 when Japan formally signed surrender documents.

Winters was my fav in BoB. Although The Pacific is my favorite series out of the trilogy, the war affected my family in the Philippines and I had wished that another series would have followed the U.S. Navy (specially the legendary aircraft carrier USS Enterprise). There’s a History Channel 360 documentary that followed The Big E and her crew - great series - I’ll link it below. Anyway, I didn’t really get into The Pacific until Ep 5 - that’s when I became totally invested in Sledge’s story. His arc was the most compelling to me - even though “Manila John” Basilone was heartbreaking - I really didn’t feel that Jon Seda sold me on his portrayal of this American icon & Marine legend.

Rose

Hey Spartan, I'm not usually the type of person to correct you guys but Basilone died on Iwo Jima on February 19th of 1945 not June 6th of 1945 which is the D-day everyone is most familiar with at Normandy beaches in France. Not a huge history buff but not sure why in the show it says D-day when it shows Basilone and his company on Iwo Jima, so I completely understand the confusion.
