The Pacific Episode 7 Reaction

Comments

I'm reminded that Ken Burns produced a documentary in 2007 called The War which drew heavily from Eugene's journals. Peleliu featured prominently in one of the episodes.

So the character Sgt haniy is based on a real sgt who after the battle sledge found and later talked to him and remarked “that was one hell of battle?” Expecting a funny remark or joke like “that was nothing!” Instead he got “yeah it was i think im done” and the marine sergeant put in his request and was honorable discharged. Now that sergeant had been in the marine crop since WW1 fought every major battle there, severed during the interwar period intervening in Central America, and at Guadalcanal wake and guam. And after all that this island did it for him and it was that moment when sledge realized how bad it was for him and it was his 1st battle. Now at the beginning he was marking down days and writing down notes in his bible, to also explain the Japanese bunkers they wee made with tunnels and a t-shape wall meaning if they tossed grenades through the slit they could hide behind the wall to stay safe from the blast and shrapnel. Add on the tunnels means once marines “cleared” it the Japanese could return and fire on a passing platoon unexpectedly. Now for the gold teeth sledge did consider it. but it wasn’t SNAFU didnt stop him but a corpsman (a medic). did after 1 month fighting sledges company went in with 400 + men they only walked out with 80 men the rest where dead or wounded The scene with the Red Cross women played out exactly like that but sledge wasnt happy to see them, in fact he hated it and was angry he was baffled seeing a bit of home in place like that in his words hell

Snafu saved Eugene from getting the gold from the dead soldiers mouths cause he still seen the innocence in Eugene……SNAFU is one of the best characters in this show

Band of Brothers is a masterpiece, but The Pacific shoes how brutal and unforgiving the war was. Both series are amazing in their own right.

My dad fought in the Pacific, but he wouldn't talk about it. It's crazy to think that growing up in the 1960s and 70's every adult man you'd see working at a store or delivering your mail, had probably been in the war, and people didn't make a big deal about it. Nobody really even mentioned it, and yet, this is what they went through in both Europe and the Pacific. A different generation. I'm glad that soldiers now can get the help they need.

This episode really shows all the horror through Eugenes eyes and how he changes as a person. Absolutely incredible acting from Joseph Mazzello.

Ack Ack was the equivalent of Winters. So losing him was like losing the father of the company, and he died 3 days before they left the line. Also the stuff Sledge was writing was how long theyve been on the island, the battle was supposed to be over in 3 days, they were in continuous combat for 30 days before an army unit took over. The book "With The Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa" was written by Sledge, using the notes he wrote in his pocket Bible. Another thing, something books and movies cant ever portray, was the smell. The island is made of coral, you cannot dig in coral, so you take all the bodies in the 110 degree heat mix it with rotten food from rations and human excrement, they had to endure that as well. Sledge says in his book, "Only the flies benefitted." Thanks for your reactions!
