D-Day is a generic term for the first day of a military operation. John Basilone was not at Normandy. The landing here was D-Day for the battle of Iwo Jima. Tarawa had a D-Day as did Saipan, Okinawa, etc

You guys are great, thank you for sharing your experience with this show with us and your commentary. He was a good Marine, and every Marine since his existence knows he was and they remember him well. His legacy lives on. Much love to you guys, episode 9 hits very, very hard. Episode 10 too, just make sure you watch the credits on Episode 10.

Lena never remarried despite living to 86 while staying heavily involved in John's legacy. Again the filmmakers have illustrated the wild variety of terrain that men faced; rain-soaked jungles, scorching coral islands and now the black volcanic sand. Most people know Iwo Jima from the iconic photo of a group of soldiers raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi after taking it. It was from this peak that the Japanese were able to target the marine landings with impunity, which was depicted here. Can't remember if its explicitly pointed out in the show but its important to remember that with each success that brings these battles closer to the mainland, the resistance becomes even more vicious.

The battle segment in this episode was actually intended to be much longer and more extensive if I am not mistaken but numerous issues, financial and otherwise, resulted in the Iowa Jima battle being severely cut down, which made me very sad given its importance and relevance in the pacific theater. As you can see it was one of the most brutal battles of the entire war.

Now you guys should watch the movies Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Both movies are based on the battle that John Basilone died in. Very under-rated movies especially the second one.

It is hard to make sense of Basilones decision to return to combat. However, it was in his blood and felt like his calling to be there in action. I have a friend who fought in Vietnam and did 3 tours. He kept going back because he felt empty when he came home. He would never talk about his experience and grew to hate the Vietnam war after it was over for several years. Very hard on the widows.
