This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. The Pacific Episode 2 Uncut Reaction

I dunno if anyone has said it already but when the army rations from 1918 showed up, he wasnt being sarcastic. All they had to eat were rations from World War 1

"Their purpose is pretty much just to kill things and scare things and destroy things." And try to either fuck or eat anything they get their hands on. :) Your description is spot on though, very different mentality. If you have a building on a road with enemies inside and the offensive is headed in that direction the Army will secure the building by kicking the door in and neutralizing the enemy combatants, the marines will secure the building by calling in an artillery/airstrike and getting rid of the building altogether. A USMC Hornet pilot said on a podcast that if he were to shot down and forced to eject he would hope the front was nearby so he could ask for a gun and he would feel perfectly fine with the marines on the ground. Every person in the USMC is a rifleman first. Gotta love that mentality. :)

I really wish I could use the "willem dafoe looking up" gif here.

I’m sure they can make the war polls at some point

Alex

They are good movies but also very slow drawn out pacing and mostly dialogue (at least if I am remembering correctly, I haven't seen them since they came out) so I'm not sure how well these would fit for reaction content, so might be better for them to watch in their own time.

More than that, the director of these two films attempted to show the War from a more personal view from the soldiers on each side, rather than just 'the good guys vs the bad guys'.

As for guerilla tactics, its as spartan said a very common tactic by rebels or revolutionaries. Guerrilla tactics are a type of warfare where small groups of fighters use hit-and-run strategies to attack a larger, more powerful enemy. Instead of fighting in traditional battles, guerrilla fighters avoid direct confrontation. They may ambush, sabotage, or surprise the enemy, and then quickly retreat before the enemy can retaliate. The goal is to make the enemy's job harder and more costly, using speed, surprise, and knowledge of the terrain to their advantage. These tactics are often used by groups with fewer resources, like rebels or insurgents, against larger military forces.

To put it simply: The Marines are a very infantry and combat focused branch (though they do have aircraft, armor, etc. as well). They are smaller than the Army but are very good at what they do. They are rapid deployment, rapid response, get in, wreck the enemy quickly and efficiently. The Army has a larger infantry and designed for longer engagements, but their mission is more diverse. Jack of all trades kind of deal. The Marines are the hammer that breaks the wall, The army is the bricks and mortar that you fill the hole with. The marines are generally considered to have stricter standards compared to the U.S. Army, particularly in terms of physical fitness, discipline, and overall expectations of conduct. Marine Corps boot camp is considered to be one of the toughest and most demanding of all the military services. Although each branch of the military has its own elite divisions/special ops groups as well within the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force etc. Nowadays, Marines are typically the first group into action; they are a primary invasion force. Let's say the USA wanted to invade a country. The Marines are the first to attack, typically by sea. Marine divisions are organized so they can deploy within a certain amount time to any part of the world ideally within 72 hours time, invade a location rapidly, destroy the enemy in short order, and hold it for a brief time before getting relieved. Once the area is under the control by the Marines, the Army takes over because the Army is better structured for long engagements. The army is a significantly larger and broader branch than the marines. Marine doctrine tends to be much more specific and less far-reaching than army doctrine.. The Army is a huge, broadly-skilled, highly varied and highly adaptable organization. I am struggling to think of any type of national or global crisis where the US Army could not potentially play a significant role. The marines are less broad in their focus. For instance, the army has its own doctors and surgeons; the marines do not, and they utilize the navy's. Their purpose is pretty much just to kill things and scare things and destroy things. This is why their training is more grueling than the other branches of the armed forces. They have more intense physical training and higher requirements for firearm training than the average Army soldier. There are of course "special forces"/elite groups in each branch of the military, but I am talking the average soldier. They have a much more combat-centered focus. Hence the "every marine is a rifleman" saying; no matter what your job is in the marines, you're expected to be able to grab a gun and fight as well as any other marine infantryman if need be.

I highly reccomment the movies Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima two great movies about the Pacifc thetre in WW2. These movies shed a lof of light on the Japanese war doctrine and how they fight very differently from other armies.

Alex

Yeah S&P the US Marines have a very different culture from the US Army. They are a much smaller force and have much less funding than the Army, although the Army did also fight in the Pacific this series focuses on the Marines since they had the largest sacrafice compartive to their size and historic significance. Generally today I would say most people respect the Marines more but they are equally as great as the army the Marines just have that badassness about them, more of that Spartan esq culture you can say.

Alex

Good point. That makes sense.

when you are on the verge of starving your stomach actually shrinks. when you suddenly quickly expand it by "chugging down a bunch of sugar filled peach juice" it will make you sick. One nitpick thing I seen in this episode is how they always look up at the flares.. Your literally trained to not do that because its like looking at a lightbulb in a room then turning off the lights. you are literally blind.

CaleJTT

So just a few things. The Marines are a separate branch from the Army and because of that the amount of money given to the Marines was much less than that of the Army for supplies and equipment. I'm glad Pudgey noticed the lack of the glove when Sgt. Basilone picked up the machine gun. The type of machine gun he was using was a water cooled machine gun. Water would surround the barrel and keep it somewhat cool so it could contine to fire. But is still to hot to touch, hen e the glove they used. Unlike Band of Brothers, The Pacific follows a few Marines and the people who surrounded them. I don't want to give away any spoilers but I look forward to your comments on the next episode...Pudgey you just keep being you. A little laughter is good when watching this series. You both do a great job with your reactions and I enjoy watching along.

"Shouldn't they have taken more ammo with them?" Remember that they also have to carry everything, walking for miles, in difficult terrain. But seeing what kind of crap they were eating, really makes you realize how important the supply chain is. I wouldn't mind learning more (an episode?) about that, honestly. The runner too. That's probably the people that run supplies from the backline to the frontline. On the one hand I was thinking that you'd be safer that way, as you're not (constantly) at the frontline. BUT you do have run back and forth when all hell is breaking loose, so you aren't under cover and thus, more exposed.

I just learned that The Solomon Islands are North of the Northeast tip of Australia about 2000 km. They were a British colony until 1978. Those conditions are atrocious. My grandfather was a Marine in Okinawa one of the of biggest battles in Japan. The marines had just formed before he went to Japan in 1944. He volunteered. My mom (his daughter) was only 16 months old when he went there. He was in his 20s so wasn't drafted, but he went because he was super patriotic. The marines are a division of the US Navy. They are the ones on the ground. The requirements for being a marine are more strict than the Army. The fittest of the fit can be marines. There is no rhyme or reason as to who will die, if they will die, or live.

Lyn Hurst

Oh hell yeah! There has never been a more accurate description of, "Locked tf In", than SGT Basilone. I throw my rec for Generation Kill after this! Marines during the invasion of iraq/baghdad. Great insight into how stupid higher leadership can be and how hard it can make life for the grunts on the ground
