Just to explain Billy Boys are protestants, IRA are catholics. Ireland which was majority catholic had got its independence but northern ireland (6 occupied counties as the IRA call it) remained part of the UK. This is bcs it had a sizeable protestant pro uk demographic who would have fought for it to remain. Protestants want NI to be part of the UK, Catholics want it to be with Ireland. Protestants like BB do bodyguard work for the facists. In the episode it explains that the protestants like the UVF approached Michael w a proposition. The IRA are f8ghting the UVF in Northern Ireland, figured out what had happened, so intercepted Michael and told Tommy. That way they could curry favour, get a powerful ally like Thomas Shelby, and turn him into an enemy of the UVF. You have to understand that at this point te British establishment and army is fighting against the ira in Northern Ireland.
