Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

New subscriber here and loving the reactions to this and Peaky Blinder’s. You guys understand everything and it’s impressive especially on first watch. If you guys do need new shows for the future would love to see a Euphoria reaction and a Heartbreak High reaction especially being a Australian show it would be cool seeing how 2 actual Australians feel about it thanks.

Catching again just means they have to catch another case. It has nothing to do with baseball. When a homicide comes in then a specific person or partners are in line to catch that case. When a case is closed, passed off or goes cold they have to catch another case. Every baseball player besides the DH throws the ball not just the pitcher. A catcher also tells the pitcher what pitches to pitch.

Don't worry about your reactions, everyone feels the same way watching it the first time - fascinated, but overwhelmed by how much there is to take in. Really like your takes on the characters as well, a lot of good observations about Rust and Maggie too that a lot of people didn't make when the show came out. Rust's lines and points of view definitely need some rewatches and some thought. In my opinion, True Detective inverts the genre a bit, with the story revolving around the characters rather than the mystery, depicting how detectives are permanently changed by working really, really dark and fucked up cases. By the way, when their boss says that if they don't get any leads, they'll be 'catching again', I think he's making a baseball reference; pitchers throw the ball, while catchers wait for the ball to be pitched. In this scenario, pitchers would be the ones leading the investigation and informing catchers about leads to follow up on.

Great job on the reactions. Yes, the first three episodes are heavy character development. 4-8 is where the meat of the show is. Can't for the next episode it's a banger!

This show does require a level of strict attention while watching but so far the reactions have been great! You are both catching a lot

Agree 100%

I’ve always loved Rusts line “world needs bad men, we keep the other bad men from the door”. My interpretation of it is the first ‘bad men’ he’s referring to is men like himself and Marty. ‘Bad’ in the sense that both are flawed, imperfect men but not evil men. Most viewers probably wouldn’t necessarily consider them bad but at the same time maybe calling them good people wouldn’t be accurate either, especially in Marty’s case (in the context of the scene, Marty is reflecting on his infidelity). The second ‘bad men’ he’s referring to is men like the killer, who everyone would agree are bad in a traditional sense, and even worse than that. The last part, ‘from the door’, is Rust acknowledging in a way that he knows him and Marty aren’t perfect, but still have a sense of morals and feel a duty to protect others from the evil men who are at the door. Enjoying the reactions so far. There’s a lot to take in, and some of Rusts monologues really do take some time to digest! Easily my favourite character in television, especially when considering how little time we have with him.

Don't worry about "challenging to react to this show", "not really much downtime", et cetera . For what it's worth, your reactions and thoughts thus far are on point. Enjoying re-watching this with you two.

Charlie Lange was the ex husband of the first victim they found. The guy they went to prison to see. He was cell mates with the ex boyfriend of the new victim they were researching. The one everyone thought drowned.

I feel like there are a lot of details that I need to go back over. Lots of disturbing images. I am concerned about Marty's daughter that drew explicit sexual scenes and some a bit torturous looking. I am wondering what she and her friends have seen. Marty and Rust are intriguing in their own ways. While they are able to speak candidly with each other, there is a lot they aren't saying

Lyn Hurst

Charlie Lange was the boyfriend in the prison they interrogated. he dated the murdered girl in the beginning

Kazzyshah

The first woman who's body is found by the tree is Dora Lange. Her ex-husband is Charlie Lange, who they visit in jail in the first episode. In episode 3 we learn that Charlie Lange shared a cell with the suspect Reggie Ledoux. They also mention the name "Andrew" a couple of times - in episode 1 and again in episode 3 where the guy on the lawnmower says the school was destroyed by Andrew (or something like that) - they're referring to hurricane Andrew. Worth mentioning cos i think you were confused by the reference in episode one, and i think they refer to some other hurricanes in the same way in upcoming episodes.

Nick Ireland

‘To catch’ refers to a process of detectives being in a rotation to handle and pick up leads for incoming cases. This a police term/slang that’s broadly used in the US. Rust and Marty were assigned to these particular cases which therefore explains why their Major uses that term with them.

Wes

I'm glad you can appreciate the setting and the writing on these slower paced ones. Now, get ready for the next episode guys!!! Not to take anything from the first 3 world building episodes, but from now on it's all bangers!!! And episode 4 just changes the game, it's a whole new level of television!
