Where is episode 5 and 6?

MARK DESANTIS

in my honest opinion to talk on spartan's opinion on how vecna took his time with max, up until this point the only person to escape him was victor, who did it by pure accident. so im sure that Vecna was just overly confident that max wouldn't be able to escape the trance at all. Also he wasn't exactly putting the hustle on for fred or chrissy either. when Fred was in the grave Vecna took his sweet ol time going down the tunnel we just don't perceive it that way due to most of Fred's experience being off camera VS Max's which was almost entirely ON camera. Idk just my personal thoughts.

Rasputin (Ras)

It absolutely makes sense that Max would be incredibly upset and grieving the loss of Billy. And actually I can say with experience that losing someone whom you had a difficult, contentious, volatile or in any other way dysfunctional relationship often compounds the grief because there’s more to regret and you feel awful for failing to “fix” things.

Dingus

wild how people tell others how to feel... If billy would have hated her, he would have ignored her. He had his own way of showing love as brutal as it was. Not like he had the best dad to learn from... he ultimately tried at the end and if you don't think that would have let to better times for them.. then I have a bridge to sell you

Michael Nelson

“Thanks To His Shit Parents” Damn Bro, What Did Billy’s Mom Do Wrong?

Fabian

I think part of the reason reactions are cool to watch is because people have different reactions and sometimes it can make you see something a scene in a different way then you did and I personally like that. If they reacted the same as I did to everything then I might as well just watch it by myself lol. I sobbed over Billy’s death but I did find it kinda weird that Max all of a sudden cares about him because it was pretty clear they hated eachother and season 3 didn’t exactly make me think he suddenly cared about max. Once you’re in a helpless position it’s natural to reach out to people and so billy pleading his case to max while possessed by the mindflayer was more like total desperation on his part and I don’t think for a second that he would’ve somehow become a friendly part of their group if he’d lived because it’s just not in his nature thanks to his shit parents. Not everybody is capable of the steve growth storyline not that steve had a hard life but he’s just friendly and goes along with stuff and that definitely isn’t billy. He isn’t about that ‘group activities with friends’ life. He’s a loner and he’s enjoys having power over people so I think his ending was the best thing for him. Realistically if he lived he’d probably have left town to work at like.. a car garage maybe and wouldn’t be around kids because he clearly hates them.

Lizabee

"nice memories they could've had together" ..... yall billy hated max. they didnt have any nice memories. he was mean and abusive to her.

chvrrvism

Good points here. Sure, it cumulates into Steve being back on babysitting duty, but there is a lot more to it. And I agree as well that he was shallow but never a bad guy. Comparing him to Billy when it comes to redemption is wild. Billy was about to run kids off the street; he was more in line with that bully from the first movie with the knive - just the older version of it. Not saying Billy does not deserve a redemption arc and got it to some extent, but he also needed one. Steve made just one stupid choice while in "love." and than grew into a true friend for many of them, mostly Dustin and Robin, but a protector of all of them.

Joel Quinn

I’m not going to weigh in on the Billy “thing” either way but I want to point out the real redemption arc of the show. That’s Steve. He was never terrible just self absorbed and shallow initially but it quickly became apparent that he was more trustworthy, more caring and more loyal than initially thought. The fact that he really cares about the kids and protects them is amazing. Outside of Joyce, he is one of the only true parents on the show. I know Spartan was on the “Steve train” when he was kicking butt in Season 2 but failed to give Steve the credit he was due in Season 3. It was the 80’s and homophobia was entrenched and widespread. Yet Steve (who had developed affection for Robin) immediately accepted Robin for who she was and continues to accept her (notice he didn’t answer when Dustin said he should date Robin). This is a pretty rare thing and almost imaginable in the 80s. Steve may not be kicking butt at this moment but he is one of the shining lights of the show.

spartan and pudgey confirmed a couple episodes ago they care for Billy so much because they personally relate to his upbringing with their family

Yes, a threat that takes their time isn't worried about their victim escaping, or toys with them. But from S&P's POV, Vecna has not appeared as such so far- only a straight-to-business killer. So it caught them (or at least Spartan) off guard, since every time Vecna has physically appeared to the victims, their deaths follow instantly.

I don't get all the Billy love. The Max love, I endorse. This is my favorite episode of any season so far. Max rules.

Michael Weiner

This episode made me love Max so much. Sadie Sink killed this episode! Anyone who has ever dealt with depression or suicidal ideation could relate to her experience and feeling of despair, feeling alone, yet still pushing everyone away. There’s something so sinister in how Vecna targets people who are in emotional pain of some kind. That alone makes him so creepy.

Ailene Evangelista

To be fair I was worried about this episode because you guys have loved Billy more than any other channel I’ve ever seen. For most of us the closest we ever got to having love towards Billy was just through seeing Max and her sadness. Y’all have had Billy in your top 3 where as 90% of fans barely had Billy escape their bottom 3 lol. So that might be where there is some difference in viewing this episode for Spartan. We can all agree to disagree I guess, because you guys say you want some real Billy time. And I’m like really? You want racist, abusive screen time? Idk I just don’t understand lol. I get understanding Billy’s abuse from his father but I don’t get the love for him like he’s a great character. And yalls love for Billy has been unique and cool until this episode where I feel like it might have taken away from the experience. Because this is hands down one of the top 5 maybe top 3 episodes of the show. I was bawling my eyes out nearly hyperventilating, thinking we were gonna lose Max. The metaphor for the journey in this episode for max is a representation on depression and how we ultimately have to run out of that darkness. Plus the song “running up that hill” the lyrics say “if only I could make a deal with God, and get him to switch our places” just hits so much. Max feels so guilty for hating Billy and feels like she deserves to die and wants God to switch their places. It’s so emotional. Love you guys

Aaron Boone

Great reaction as always, guys. Really enjoyed this one. I know you’re very respectful with your replies, and you take things on board; but just remember that while is it an incredibly powerful episode - one that resonates with a lot of fans (myself included, having battled with trauma and depression similar to Max) that wasn’t the case for everyone. This is going off of what I’ve seen online, and speaking to family & friends whom love the show. Art is subjective, and we all have our own personal experiences that allow us to connect with certain pieces of content, or not; and that’s completely okay. I personally can’t stand Billy! He’s a racist, abusive bully; but I can see why people extend empathy towards him - especially reverting back to the sequence of him as a kid on the beach, in season 3. He’s a complex character. I think what dosen’t help; and this isn’t me having a pop at anyone, as I think I said something about how excited I was for you guys to reach season 4) but pinpointing a certain episode and hyping it up, is kind of a lowkey spoiler. It’s human nature to then build something up, that might not pay off in the way that you expected; or in the way others were expecting. I might be contradicting what I just said above; but as the story progresses, you’ll see just how dangerous Vecna really is. However, I definitely understand why you didn’t find him intimidating in this episode. I remember reading a comment from someone back when the season first dropped; and they said during the Max sequence at the end of 4x4, that he reminded them of Jim Carrey from the 2000 Grinch movie, and I now I can’t un-see it. 😂 I know you said you’re not a big fan of horrors; but maybe during spooky season, and in between the wait for season 5 of ST, add ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ to your list. I know others have already mentioned it, but season 4 is heavily inspired by those movies. Robert Englund that plays Victor Creel, is also the main villain Freddie Kruger in the franchise. Something else that hyped up the episode for a lot of people, but again, not everyone (especially different generations) are going to be familiar with that, or the references.

Nicola Jayne

Yeah, Vecna is by far my favorite villain on the show and I think they did a fantastic job with him. He's a boss level villain. He doesn't need to chase you.

Farbod

I like it when reactors don't have the same experience I do. I prefer genuine interpretation of their experiences, so don't feel off Spartan for not connecting with it as much as others expected. Personally, I did find Vecna intimidating but it's much more subtle than your typical monster, like last season's human fudge monster was far more in your face freaky rather than an enemy that enjoys toying with its prey. At any rate, I think you're going to find the reveals to come quite engaging.

Paul

I preface this by saying its strictly my opinion, so if you don't agree than no worries. I just think people are too focused with others having the same reaction as them. Having S&P learn a specific history or experience pop culture the same way you did so they could have the same reaction you did isn't really realistic. Everyone brings their own experiences and nostalgia to a show and while I understand that everyone wants that connection to a reactor to experience exactly like you did, it just doesn't work. All we can really ask for is sincerity and enthusiasm, which S&P bring in spades. While all the Billy stuff isn't for me (I don't care about Billy as a character), S&P do, and they have different life experiences and their own nostalgia they bring to the table. The amount of content that S&P put out is already ridiculous. Asking them to do prep work for each one so that they can match your baggage is just not possible.

Farbod

this was super informative and helpful thanks! and with those epic closing words a mans status has been elevated within the realm.

CpaSpartan Pudgey

This is an excellent point, people rarely leave it at “this is my favorite season” and instead have to really lay it on thick. I get people are excited but I wish that sort of excitement got reserved more for the spoiler areas.

Veilsix

as much as i love how much this fanbase loves this show, i kinda wish this season hadn’t been so hyped up so much. something can be near perfect but if you hear 500 times how amazing something is before you experience it yourself, it’s almost inevitable that you are going to feel let down at some point. idk i know the weird focus on billy is unrelated and leading to it’s own disappointments but i just feel it coming eventually.

AG

I don't think Steve was anywhere near as bad as Billy was. Billy seems to be like what Steve was originally intended to be before his actor talked to the writers about his character.

Golladan

I love this episode, easily my favorite Stranger things episode ever! <3

TN

For starters I am going to repeat what I’ve been saying this whole series: I wish that for a specific type of show like Stranger Things, which draws so many elements from the pop culture that was popular during the timeframe in which the show is set… I wish we could assign you guys a little homework before the show or before each season. There are certain movies from that time period that the show assumes you have seen “as an 80’s fan” which help you establish the “rules” you’ll be dealing with during the show or each season. For example in season 1 having watched Goonies, Carrie and in particular Alien especially would have helped you understand that the people being taken and cocooned were never coming back and instead were used as incubators for more creatures. Watching Ghostbusters and Aliens before season 2 would have helped establish why there were now more creatures acting in a hive sense. Watching Terminator 1/2, Rocky 4 and movies like Night of the Creeps, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Night of the Living Dead, would have prepared you for the big Russian and the mind flayer zombies. This season movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th would have prepared you for the slow moving stalking killer especially one that takes you within your own head/sleep. You’d also have appreciated a certain cameo last episode from Freddy himself. Now- onto the episode and reaction. As always it’s fun to hang with you guys through these, the time since starting Stranger Things on the channel has flown by so fast it’s insane. I do understand why you guys are focused on Billy. Especially with Hop having been revealed to be alive. And both having died at the same time… and one having been a villain at the cusp of a potential redemption arc. It would have been nice for it to happen but Billy’s definitely gone. It’s kind of been a tease because of how focused the first 4 episodes were on him but it’s really more about the aftermath of Billy’s death rather than about Billy himself. One regret I do have is we never saw the reaction of the neighborhood pool milf squad losing their Billy. Regarding Max and her big scene. For me the scary and suspense came from the fact that we have seen multiple people at this point die horrifically painful and disfiguring deaths once Vecna lays his hand on them. We’ve seen the cruelty and utter torture of these deaths and then we see Max get raised into the air and we think that not only is she about to die for sure but what a horrible way for her to go with her little body about to be shattered bone by bone while in a state of total terror in her mind. Even as she is running thanks to the chance her friends gave her, Vecna’s slow moving confidence makes us feel as if she still has no chance until we see her drop from his clutch and into her friends arms. The zoomer was able to zoom to safety while listening to her song about zooming. A song she wouldn’t be obsessed with if it wasn’t for her grieving Billy, so in a sense he saves her life as a final parting gift and leaves her a major weapon for helping to stave off Vecna. One of my favorite scenes aside from that obvious one is the assault on the Byers home. Those chunky fbi agents were all but shrugged off till the gunfight starts a gorgeous one take sequence as the camera moves through the doorways and halls of the home…. Our remaining agent channeling Hopper as he does everything he can to protect the kids and get them out of there. Absolute stud of a gunfighter that guy. Eleven is off to become a super hero again. Her letter to Mike is a two sided blade. #1 she lets him know that she’s not done being a superhero. And #2 she helps him see how it feels to not receive the assurance of being loved at a time when it might be appreciated. That should hopefully be the gut punch to mature him up a little bit. This episode marks the beginning of Stranger Things taking you for a serious ride. I wish I was watching this for the first time because it’s so hard not to start discussing where things are going next in order to help you sort out some of the things that are puzzling you still. Just know that there is more to come and be revealed about everything and everyone just about. Try to have as little expectations as possible if that’s even possible with us hyping this shit up so much lol. Ps there are lots of small auditory cues hidden throughout this season that are there as clues and hints. Not a big deal if you miss them but they are a neat touch if you do pick up on them such as the tick ticks of the grandfather clock. Don’t worry if people get mad about you guys talking over them, it’s not like you can help it and you can and should only react naturally. Not all of us picked up on some or all of them the first time through either. You guys keep doing you and shake the haters. But do let Billy go haha. Your enjoyment will improve. Can’t wait till the next one. As always House Spartan rules and House Pudgey is the worst. 😘

Veilsix

S3 and S4 in terms of writing disappointed me, in terms of entertainment and enjoyability its amazing, but the strong writing and story telling really dialed down from the first 2 seasons, even season 2 had an episode where the writing absolutely disappeared but all aside from that one episode (the kali one) S1 and S2 will stay unmatched, lets hope S5 does the story telling justice

lohan

Veilsix

Suprised y‘all made it about Billy when the episode explored such a great character like Max

Rey Jr

Max has been one of my Top 3 favorite characters ever since she was introduced in season 2. Probably even my no1 favorite. So I was so scared for her when I watched this season for the first time and always feel for her during the letter scene

AkiZzu

Vecna is the epitome of 70s/80s horror. The slow walk and the creeping around and the toying with his victims is a must. Freddy Kreuger, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees all were exactly like this. It's all about the chase. They get enjoyment from the torture and torment of the victim before killing them. Max has seen the upside down and she has support from everyone around her. She's a more difficult target. Chrissy and Fred had to suffer in silence without any help and they were completely unfamiliar with any of this. Who in their circle of family and friends would ever believe them? They would've looked insane had they told anyone. Can you imagine being an average teenager and seeing Vecna and the upside down for the first time? That would be terrifying! Vecna is the strongest villian they've encountered thus far. Answers will come...hang in there.

Jessica Houser

I think they didn't focus on making vecna scary in the last scene, but more making us scared of losing Max

Frederikke

I feel like Vecna was still menacing because they had that whole build up from the first three episodes so it felt like Max truly was in danger. So her escaping was more of a sigh of relief and kinda like ok yeah this demon does have weakness.

AlrightThere

I've said this before and I'll say it again - Spartan is the weirdest reactor I've ever seen out there. This entire episode was a masterclass from start to finish, the scene with Max escaping Vecna had the whole fanbase holding its breath, the music was flawless, the acting was top-notch, and this guy keeps blabbing on about Billy and how Billy would somehow wreck Vecna if he was there. Dude, just let it go. He's done, that's it, Billy's dead. Of course you can't fully enjoy the episode for what it is if you keep comparing it to some made-up scenarios. Not everything has to be a clear-cut battle between good and evil, a brawl between some made up Leonidas and a big bad guy. Same thing happened with Breaking Bad - "Just imagine if Gus and Mike were here to deal with Jack's crew, they would wreck them". It's the type of scenarios we used to come up with as kids. Just enjoy it for what it is man, rather than what you'd want it to be.

Alex I.

The Victor Creel flashback felt right out of American Horror Story or Haunting of Hill House. Max's mom was probably never there because Max was surprised she was not at work. It's interesting how Max wishes Billy was still alive so that things would be "right again", because from what we've seen of their life, it wasn't right even when he was alive, he bullied her a lot, it's just that things got worse when he died. So when Vecna in the form of Billy told her a part of her wanted him dead, he probably was speaking the truth, not the whole truth, it's not all black and white, but the darker side of her mind that Vecna tries to appeal to probably felt some kind of relief to see her bully disappear. What's tragic is that her bully was bullied himself.

Lise

St is like kind of horror you gotta understand horror movies watch sum

JSM -Tac

4 gotta be 1 or 2

JSM -Tac

Interestingly enough season 4 is my least favourite, it feels to me like the pitch for every storyline was just Make It Bigger (including the runtime lol). That being said, I absolutely love Max's journey and the ending of this episode is the most emotional I had ever been watching Stranger Things. The sequence of her scrambling out of Vecna's realm set to the music is just 10/10 bloody perfection and really hits me as someone still dealing with grief &depression❤️

Luka Poser

bruh talking bout "why the suspense?" im dead

Chris

Vecna is HIM tbf. He’s by far the most powerful villian this verse has seen. He’s stronger in the flesh and is weaker in Max’s mind because she can take more control with the music playing therefore making Vecna weaker in her mind. He’s also very arrogant so he wouldn’t feel the sense of urgency as he couldn’t imagine anyone escaping his grasp. He’s extremely powerful though as you’ll come to see.

Owen Hargrave

Yeah exactly. I mean Max is familiar with the upside down. She's been through some stuff so obviously she is stronger than Vecna's previous victims.

Vhaxem

i think the reason why the ‘running up that hill’ scene isn’t just because it’s super intense and nerve-wracking but how we’ve seen max struggling with depression this whole season due to billy’s death, she’s been pushing her friends away but in the moment she is faced with death, she remembers all those moments with her friends and literally RUNS for her life in order to live.. i sob every time i watch that scene because it’s just so beautiful

Katie

I don't know in a way I feel like the slow act of Vecna walking after Max is his idea that there is no escape for her. It reminds me of a cat playing with its food, it doesn't think the prey has any chance of escape and so he is enjoying the act of tormenting it. We see Max's favorite song in the first epsiode of season 4 when she is depressed in school and it represents her guilt towards Billy's death and how part of her wishes to take his place or join him in death which "Billy/Vecna" insinuates when she is in his trance. I, like Pudgey, kind of see Max and it reminds me of how I've dealt with close deaths in the past. I love the representation of grief that she shows in this season because it is a such complex emotion that I feel like most shows don't get quite right.

Madison

What I'd give to see that last scene for the first time all over again!!! The cinematography, the score, and the suspense are next level of course. But the symbolism of it is what makes it stand out for me. That expression on her face when she runs at the end shows how desperate she is to live again and fight back. ❤️ I also love how when Max was introduced in S2, she wanted to join their party basically as the speedster. And here she escapes Vecna by running like hell. It's just brilliant storytelling!

Sabine Muller

In terms of Vecna I think he’s so confident that he never imagined someone would escape his grasp. He’s also not the type of villain to be running after his prey, he’s defo a slow walk movie monster lol Also Billy is a conflicting character. I don’t think it would ever make sense for him to come back. He didn’t have a good relationship with anyone in the show, especially not Max. But he died a hero, Now we’ve had some closure with Max. i think that’s enough :)

Super Novice

I was waiting for "Jaka Haga" to change his face

Luke

This needs to be like in the post season QA or whatever! Or just in the intro for episode 5! This was such a big moment in time in meme/internet culture

Franky E

To be honest I think Spartan relates to the “alpha-male” kinda energy Billy has. We tend to resonate to characters that are similar to ourselves in various ways. Not that I’m saying Spartan is like Billy, but I feel like Billy had a certain macho-ness that Spartan vibes with. So I understand why he’s left such an impact on him

Franky E

Such a good scene with that one long take as they’re trying to get out of the house

James Woodford

Real power means not having to be fast.

Jon Biavati

Keep in mind, Vecna in Maxs mind is just a remote projection of the actual physical Vecna, who is still hung up in the attic. The way I see this power is, that while he seems slow and a little impotent here, he is only as strong as the persons mind he is inhabiting is weak. Max has a particularly strong will, compared to vecnas other victims so far, where his hold over them seemed inevitable. Pair that with Max's fav song playing in the background, further weakens the mind bond. Also Venca is arrogant, and has time to play with his food so to speak.

Sam EDM

When you mentioned you heard the song before Pudgey it was played in the first episode when max is listening with her headphones at school. They mention it as her "favourite song" in this episode indicating that she would listen to it all the time. It reflects how she had been coping mentally as the lyrics suggest that she wants to "make a deal with god" and "get him to swap our places" i.e. kill her and bring billy back. But yea this song slaps, it was made in 1985 and after this episode came out it got back onto the music charts. I think it even got to number 1 on the Aus charts for spotify after this episode haha.

Sebz

the actor who played Victor Creel was Robert Englund (the same actor as Freddy Kreuger, which this season takes a great deal of influence from)

Stephen Blair

Good point about the differences in their perceptions of time. Makes sense that an alternate dimension wouldn't necessarily follow the time/space "rules" we experience

Robin Lee Melendez

Thank you! I don't get the obsession 😅 I mean sure he was traumatized as a child and not saying he's pure evil but ... Not sure he'd be a favorite character

Minerva Ravenclaw

Dear Billy🤍

Minerva Ravenclaw

Always appreciate the sincere reaction from you two!! You guys need to watch some more horror. Villains don’t walk fast. The stalking and anticipation is what builds tension and fear. Especially when the villain is already in control.

Farbod

why would Vecna need to be fast? Max was in his domain...he could be anywhere in that mind trippy place. so he can walk around slowly because he can take his time. he seems so confident that he probably wouldn't feel rushed. he also looked a bit confused that Max was doing such a good job of fighting back. he had a last kinda frustrated or maybe perplexed expression on his face when Max was about to escape as he was dropping the debris.

Nate Terry

REALLY?!?!!? WTF....

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Well said! The writers created such a powerful metaphor for mental illness which really hits hard this season

Meera ☾

Vecna himself is an analogy for grief and depression. Everything that happened with max was in her mind, a representation of her internal grief and the fight for the will to live. It’s done really beautifully, cause it shows that your friends can help you and pull you back from the edge (playing the music) but in the end you ultimately need to save yourself, like max did. He wasn’t truly attacking her physically, he was trying to break her mind but couldn’t. She found her strength and resisted. Sadie sink is arguably one of the most talented actors on this show; they made the right call bringing max into the spotlight this season

Neville L

This is explained further in an upcoming episode

Gemineye

I'm pretty sure Max's mom was never there. Vecna was taunting Max from the beginning, luring her into a loving conversation with mom to then turn it sinister. Just makes him so much more vile.

Daenerys Targaryen

the cinematogrophy in that gunfight scene in the house looked like some shit from extraction. Gotta be one of my favorite shot scenes from the show so far.

Alex Walker

Also, yeah, vecna aint nothin, max totally got away from him scott free so easy ;)

ChiefWill15

Agreeing with Vecna being less of a force but that’s just the script to get insight on what to do to overcome his threats. The red glow in the cemetery was like I’m Billy’s memories of the source of the trauma. Max’s wasn’t the same here so it’d almost like it was Vecna’s instead of hers. I will go against probably everyone and think that it’s just way too off for Max to be too emotional in missing Billy because in no way was she ever happy of his presence in previous seasons. Don’t know if in the future we will get maybe a good relationship flashback but it definitely isn’t what has been shown for her to feel the grief portrayed up to now.

Cortney K

yeah it's fair enough if they like Billy but i think the episode didn't resonate with them as much because they were focusing more on his potential return instead of Max's pov - which was processing her guilt and trauma surrounding Billy's death and the effects on her mental health. Pushing to survive at the end was a really emotional moment for a lot of viewers. Appreciate S&P for their genuine reactions though!

Meera ☾

this episode is very hard, max is amazing

Maximiliano Vagnoni

most iconic scene with max

Ebony

I do agree kinda with the comments here about Billy, but I also get their point of view. Like Steve was an absolute ass in season 1 and turned into a great character. Billy was a very complex character with a lot of wasted potential and on top of that was portrayed by a very convincing actor, so I get them wishing he would be alive as it would have created a lot of interesting plot points (his relationship with his abusive father, with Max, his racial issues, etc.).

Jasper

Spartan is almost through the 5 stages of grief with Billy lol

Jake

this is well explained! makes sense. thanks

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Billy is another way of saying William just shorter. Not sure if that is an American thing or not. My dad's name is William but I always called him Billy when he was around.

Trevor Evans

Easily my favorite episode of the series, but the one thing I agree with spartan completely here is the way in which max breaks free by just pulling a tenticle lmao. There were so many ways they could have done it and that was the most corny way.

Gemineye

Kinda bummed they didn't really seem to like this episode as much as the community does. Not hating I love their reactions, this one just felt a bit off its just such a big moment for Max and they just keep complaining that Billy died. Everyones entitled to their favorite characters but Billy? Really? 😂

Joey Falgren

Oh man. The season just gets so much better from here.

Demented Avenger

Yeah, I get both points of Spartan: 1. Vecna was less scary. I think a big cause for this is that you've seen him quite a few times by now, while in the other seasons the producers made sure to do the reveal as late and as slowly as possible. Anticipation and imagination are powerful tools, which the producers no longer had at this point, concerning how Vecna looks. 2. Vecna took his time. While I agree with this, I think there are some explanations: he seems to like to toy with his victims psychologically. And also I think that time flows differently "in your mind" than in real-time.

Ok.....so for clarity......Vecna seemed less menacing because Max has what the other victims didn't have. She had a group of friends that where fighting for her life. Vecna wasn't just chasing Max. He had to fight against all of her friends, who are used to fighting other forces and they were determined to save Max. So he wasn't as in control like he was with the other victims. And......your obsession with Billy is hilarious. But the plot of this episode was the fact that Max was deep in depression over Billy's death. And her embracing that she has people that love and care for her, helped her fight through that depression. That's the "I'm still here" at the end. She was being overtaken by that depression. This episode had so many layers. But great reaction guys. Really enjoyed it.

When it comes to Spartan’s issue with Vecna in this episode, you have to remember that Vecna isn’t actually there. He has infiltrated Max’s mind and all that is essentially happening in Max’s mind. When she runs he doesn’t chase after her because she’s not actually running from him that’s her mind trying to resist. Vecna is as strong as Max allows him to be in her mind. when she hears the music she has more control of her mind, Max ripping a chunk out of vecnas’ neck represents Vecna losing some power over Max’s mind as Max gains some control back. Vecna in the flesh is far more powerful. And When max went into the red cloud and saw the broken up house that was Max getting a quick glimpse into Vecnas mind as he was infiltrating hers. A bit like in Lord of The Rings when Pippin touched the seeing stone and Sauron read Pippin’s mind to find out where the ring was, pippin briefly read Sauron’s mind as well as the connection worked both ways.

This and season finale are peak, surprised Spartan didn’t get hit in the feels more. And in regards to vecna not being menacing I disagree but since you’re not into horrors really I can see why ur not getting the references. Like the slow stalking style of Michael Myers’s or the taunting of Freddy Krueger, who btw is the actor who plays victor in this episode. The 80s horror inspo is ripping out this episode I love it 😁

Yoursinchris

Don't forget Willie, Liam. lol

Jason Sadowski

Thnx for explaining this. I always wondered about this. First I thought the Russian hit the shackles to the point that they were almost breaking, and that's why Hopper dreaded the checkups. But when he slided them off the first time, that theory went out of the window. So next, I thought that the Russian had maybe busted his bones for the shackles to be able to slide off. But then I wondered how he could still walk. But now your explanation cleared it up 👍

I was crying for Max 😭 absolutely one of the best episode of stranger things! Sadie killed it! The flashbacks of them being kids🥹🥹

Salma

Billy saved El sure but let’s not forget that he is a racist, a bully and an abuser I get he sacrificed himself but let’s not brush over what he did to Lucas and the kids.

This episode for me was very intense. A lot happened: Hop trying to escape and being screwed by Iuri, the scene at joyce's house with the military (and yes, her house always get distroyed), the way Max delivered emotions reading that letter and not knowing if she was going to survive, learning about Victor history... Vecna sure took his time, but i think it was for the sake of the story. And no, Max mom's wasnt even there in that scene, it was all in Max's head. As you, i really wanted to see more of Billy. I think people like this episode so much not because it's scary but because we felt Max pain and we felt like we were going lose her, also we all felt betrayed by Iuri, and we were all rooting for Hop and he was so close... all this emotions combined make this episode so great. Thanks for sharing your thougts with honesty, great reaction as always. Can't wait for the next ones ❤️❤️

Almost every reactor ive watched misreads the 11 letter to mike completely wrong. It’s not a cute moment, its a gut punch, she signed it “from’ el” instead of “love’ el.”

ChiefWill15

yeah that's understandable. it is tricky, because if we truly remain silent we may absorb is slightly better but then would have no way of putting it up on youtube due to the copyright system, so it is essential we are sharing a degree of thoughts/conversation to allow for the edit versions. but everyone enjoys their episodes differently so we get it! hopefully you still were able to enjoy most of it

This was the era that made me first start watching Stranger Things. the first two times I couldn’t get into it but once Season Four was out, it was MAJORLY MAINSTREAM!! Especially “Running Up That Hill” !!! Makes me get chills every time I hear it! Max absolutely became my favorite character❤️❤️❤️

Traditionally slow movement is viewed as more terrifying. However with Vecna in this episode the slowing movement allows you to take in the atmosphere and all the little Easter eggs & hidden details. Plus I think the extra time in the upside down/ dream (nightmare) realm is also a nod to Nightmare on Elm Street & Freddy Krueger who was played by the same actor who plays Victor (Robert Englund).

Jason Sadowski

This is my favorite episode. Lots of answers and more questions. I love the way they used the Kate Bush song Running Up that Hill. Swapping places to understand each other is what it is about. Max scared the heck out of me, but Vecna seemed a bit surprised when she came back to the area with all the towers and where Chrissy and Fred were. It is almost as if he didn't expect her there. Lots going on with Joyce, Hop, Murray - yes Yuri is a sneaky snake.

“William? Is That Supposed To Be Billy?” 😂 Yes, For Those Who Don't Know, William Can Use A Short Name Like Billy, Or Bill Or Will Or Will.I.Am 😂

Fabian

That's some interesting info 👍

Is that really an upgrade?

Golladan

Best episode so far in s4 and It was great to see Billy for the closure and the actor as usual killed it and yea Max is a way better character this season and trust me guys , Vecna is easily the best villain yet imo and also I used to feel the same way about horror films until I started watching some of the best and they are actually amazing if done well like Haunting of hill house which you guys are planning for halloween which is one of the best seasons of any show imo.

JonSnow21

Billy is a conflicting character. Of course he saved El and you could always see his tumult of emotions under the surface. But he was a bully and an abuser. I don’t understand the almost hero worship of him. He’s not “the man.”

Brandi Renee

Max's mother wasn't actually there. Similarly to how billy showed up, vecna can basically make whoever he's trapped see things that aren't there.

Jayshawn Robinson

Shows like Stranger things really do benefit from the community discussions that happen at the time of airing. When you have no waiting time between seasons, it removes the anticipation that adds to the experience of the show.

AP

Vecna out here so confident that he’ll succeed in his mission that he’s not rushing.

ranae alt

Epic episode. Kate Bush released "Running up That Hill" in 1985, Stranger things put the song to number one nearly 40 yearly years later! It doesn't slow down at all from now on! Oh yeah the actor that played Victor Creel also played Freddy Krueger in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Also Max's mum was just part of the vision. There's so much to come, I can't bloody wait!!!!!

Melanie Vine

Steve really upgraded from spiked baseball bat to lamp

Bill is short for William

Truly an amazing episode, but I really hate to say it, the near constant talking over the last ten minutes kind of ruined it. I love S&P! Don't get me wrong. But occasionally, they talk way too much over important scenes or dialogue. I think this episode would have been more impactful if they'd stopped talking for a bit. Spartan even mentions that it didn't hit him like he expected. I suspect that's partially because of the constant conversation instead of just being in the moment.

John Neiberger

The song is the one Max was listening to at the start of this season when she was reintroduced. I usually watch stuff at x1.5 speed, but always need to go back to x1.0 for that scene. With the flashbacks there was a possibility they were really going to kill her off then and there.

Golladan

amazing episode! episode 7 is my favorite of the season

Billy is a common nickname for people named william

Jayshawn Robinson

The assault on the Byer's new house was all done in one take. No cuts. Took multiple attempts until they got it right.

Golladan

The show didn't really resolve anything about Billy other than the cause of his trauma and his self sacrifice. We never got to see him actually change his ways re: racism, almost running children over with his car, the mistreatment of Max (which I supposed tangentially gets covered via his sacrifice moment, but not really the other two). It would've been nice if he had gotten some time to develop that way before his sacrifice imho.

SuddenImpulse

Wonderful reaction guys! A really emotional episode that really cemented Max as one of my favourite characters. As for the Billy stuff, I credit him for saving El, but hard to warm to him completely considering he was a racist to Lucas, and the show never really resolved that.

dandelions2

Let's Fxcking Go! This is gonna be great....you'll absolutely love it!

YAYYYY!!! Oh my god I’ve been waiting for this! So excited to watch it later 🥳🥳🥳

Hop got the other prisoner to hammer the shackles into his ankle to create a groove so he could slip the shackles off. The reason he closes his eyes when they are checking the shackles is to brace himself against the pain he's about to feel when they tug on them.

AP

Nah this is one of them ones!!! Looks like I got my after work plans locked and loaded! Mad stoked for this!
