Comments

Hell yes! Omg, I think they would love it

Ismail Chettfour

BluePanda

Gutted.

Micah Mann

Gambit

Great reaction. I saw this in the cinema when it was released, and I felt absolutely hammered by that opening scene. It felt like reliving that viewing again through you. It really brings out the horrors of war like few other war movies. Keep it up.

Fredmans

Please react to planet of the apes trilogy!

Scabal

I'm tell ya, if you enjoyed this. You've gotta put "Fury" back on the voting list LOL. Great movie though! Lovely reaction.

It wasn't me

Have you guys seen any of the creed movies??!

Dominique

I am no stranger to leaving long posts, but this might be long even for me so I apologise in advance. As much as I love "Dunkirk" and "1917", this movie is definitely the best war movie I have ever seen. I still cannot believe it did not win Best Picture at the Oscars, and that it lost to "Shakespeare in Love" (how many people watch that movie today, or even remember it?). I'm definitely adding that to Harvey Weinstein's list of crimes, even though it pales compared to the rest. I am very impressed that Pudgey recognized "Steamboat Willy" immediately during the end battle. I'm not sure I've seen any other reactor notice that fact before he attempts to surrender to Upham. Most people confuse him with the soldier who killed Mellish, but you guys didn't. Spielberg wanted an unknown to play Ryan, which is what Damon was when he was cast. Unfortunately for Spielberg, "Good Will Hunting" was released before SPR and Damon became a star, winning an Oscar for GWH's screenplay. The story Ryan tells about his brothers was ad-libbed on the spot, you can even see Hanks looking over at Spielberg and giving a slight nod before staying in the scene. One big problem I usually have with war movies is that they expect you to care about what happens to several soldiers who you can hardly tell apart (all in the same clothes and with basically the same haircut). I find it hard being invensted in their individual fates when I can't tell who is who. That doesn't apply to this movie, though. During the D-day sequence we're only really following Miller, aka Tom Hanks. By the time the end battle happens we've spent so much time with the members of his squad that we know who is who and can easily follow along without getting them confused. Lastly... I love that Pudgey picked up on something that I've always felt a bit bad about with the ending. It's not at all a criticism of the movie, because people aren't perfect, but what Miller says to Ryan in the end essentially doomed him to live with even worse survivor's guilt than before. I lifted this from tvtropes (it seemed better than trying to reinvent the wheel): "Ryan never asked for the rescue mission, in fact he is vocal about not wanting it at all, and it only happens because all three of his brothers have died. And then he gets an enormous heap of survivor's guilt fodder laid upon him by the dying captain of the team who were sent to save him (and the movie implied that he feels that kind of guilt already when he asks for the names of the two men who, at the time they first found him, had died for him). When we see him again as an old man we learn that he has suffered under this for the remainder of his life, specifically saying that he thinks about those words every day and wonders if Miller feels he has earned it. /.../ Miller effectively doomed Ryan to live the rest of his life plagued by the thought that he might not be worthy of their rescue." Again, sorry for the novel-length comment, and thanks for a great reaction!

Actually they are two different people. You can tell by their clothes, and the cast listing shows that they are played by two different actors.

When I saw this in the theater in 98 the place was packed. When it ended, the entire theater emptied and walked to out to our cars in complete silence. Everyone felt the power and emotion.

Travis

You guys need to watch Hacksaw ridge

Troy

This movie, and 1917 are definitely a top my favorite war films.

Zach Zbinden

1917 is ace as are the other three you mentioned.

AdrianF

Someone needs to invent a way to look through stuff on the Internet that already exists.

AdrianF

Brilliant film! Definitely one of my favourite war movies. Another good one that came out a few years ago is 1917, ww1 film. Also if you like your war/military history there are a few great documentaries you could watch? One by Peter Jackson for ww1 called They shall not grow old or Jeremy Clarkson's The Victoria Cross and The greatest raid of all time. I don't know if you'd be interested in watching them but I'd love to watch them along with you!

Georgia Kairi O'Doherty

Have they watched Hacksaw Ridge yet?

D-Day crash course!โ€ฆ June 6, 1944 was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The Alliesย usedย overย 5,000 ships to land more thanย 156,000 troops on 5 beaches in Normandy, France (which was occupied by the Nazis). The goal was to get the Allied forces into Europe to fight on the Western Front. (The Soviet forces were also fighting the Nazis on the Eastern Front). Early on June 6, Allied airborne forces parachuted into drop zones across northern France. Ground troops from the boats then landed across 5 assault beaches: Utah & Omaha (Americans), Gold & Sword (British), and Juno (Canadians). By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold along the coast and began their advance into France, but they took heavy casualties to achieve that. D-Day Allied forces consisted primarily of American, British and Canadian troops, but also included Australian, Belgian, Czech, Dutch, French, Greek, New Zealand, Norwegian, Rhodesian and Polish naval, air and ground support. This movie focuses on American troops on Omaha beach, but Americans, Brits and Canadians experienced similar horrors on all the other beaches. The weather was awful, the Germans were prepared with defenses, and tons of young men died storming the beaches just to gain a foothold on land. It was terrible and heroic.

Heya guys, I'm quite late and not sure how to make a suggestion, but I'd LOVE it if you reacted to Serevance! It's such an amazing series, I think you'd like it!

Lara Amaro

Pow stands for prisoner of war. The guy who they let go who killed the captain is also the one who killed Upham buddy with the Hitler youth knife through the heart after the struggle.

Greg Amor

Pudgey never fails to make me laugh. :D That guy at the beginning compared to the rest you could see in that scene looked like he was in a much better shape, with the help of a medic and some luck he probably made it out.... Pudgey: "Just shoot him please put him out of his misery!" :D btw POW is Prisoner of War. Over 18000 Paratroopers ( US 101st and 82nd plus the British 6th Airborne Divisions )were dropped behind enemy line deep into Normandy the night before D-Day. Their objective was to capture key locations like crossroads, bridges, towns and destroy the German artillery that was in range of the shore in order to prevent them firing on the allies when the landing begins. Due to very heavy clouds and enemy fire many of them were dropped early or way outside their drop zones so they were pretty much spread all over Normandy. Ryan was in a 101st that's why it was so difficult to find him. You guys really need to watch Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down. This is a Spielberg directed movie with Tom Hanks as an actor in it, Band of Brothers is their shared love child, ( both ex. producers ) telling the story of the 101st throughout the war in Europe. Great reaction as usual, hits really hard on the 80th birthday of D Day.

neutchain

Yep its an amazing miniseries, all based on true events. Super high production value and great writing/acting.

neutchain

Enjoyed this one, thanks guys! I'm so excited for you to get round to Band of Brothers.

Wadey

The effects in this movie for 1998 are actually brilliant, quite amazing actually

Cal

You should definitely watch Schindler's List as well at some point. Another one that should be shown at school in history classes.

I'm 8th generation military, married to it as well. A lot of the older vets in my family were/are REALLY affected by this movie. Doesn't matter if they served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or the WOT since 9/11 - they say the scenes of the landing on Omaha Beach are some of the most realistic depictions of combat ever made. A lot of vets I've known say they couldn't finish the movie, or if they did, won't watch it again. The story of Saving Private Ryan is based on a real family who had 4 sons serving in WWII. 2 of them died on the same day at Omaha Beach, a 3rd was missing and presumed KIA. The 4th brother was located & ordered home. Like Private Ryan in the movie, the 4th brother refused to go. The good news is he survived, & later the missing 3rd brother was found. Amazing story. Definitely recommend Band of Brothers. Excellent series

Robin Lee Melendez

I know it's not winning the poll right now but you should 100% watch Band of Brothers!!!

Guy-on-Couch

Wow, such a great reaction. This is the 1st R rated movie I ever saw, as my father saw the significance of this film and wanted me to see it; at age 13. It instilled a profound level of reverence for those that served in the military and fought to preserve the freedom we have in the U.S.; and especially those that gave their lives. Truly one of the great films in my lifetime; so glad you got to do this one. And I donโ€™t know if it was intentional, but to release this edited cut on the 80th anniversary of D Day (the opening scene), just adds another level.

BigTim86

What amazing timingโ€ฆ 80 years๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Erin

Everyone says this with reactions of this, but is a testament to the movie, is when this came out some WW2 vets that were at D-Day were brought to tears with some leaving the theater because of how accurate the depiction was. Im paraphrasing but one saying "the only thing missing was the smell of gunpowder and blood"
