We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. My man has shinobi on the shelves, shinobi on his shirt and shinobi in the sheets and has the audacity to call them ronin, lord give me strength ;D Ps. the line John drew in the sand against the grain felt like John giving the middle finger to all of it in frustration whilst feeling powerless to do anything else

yeah that's some good insight and relevant, do like that perspective even though i feel like both sides are very understandable as it's a heavy burden to carry

CpaSpartan Pudgey

This episode showed the difference between Buntaro and John. John was willing to put his own feelings aside and give Mariko what she wanted, her own death, even though it broke his heart. Buntaro would never do this, instead always making it about himself. That is why Mariko threw it back in his face the prior episode.

I did not read the novels or any background information on this show/ story. Honestly, I do not care and find it more interesting to take the show for what it is. That being said, Buntaro is an interesting topic and in general I'm with Pudgey and Spartan that it is absolutely fine to like him. For those times he is a very good maybe even perfect Samurai. Beating a wife back in those days is probably not even worth a footnote. Not good of course, but I expect worse from most of them (and Mariko is ruthless as well, she utilizes her 8 fence stuff as a weapon, not a defense). Buntaro values and lives by the rules of their society; hence, he mocks Anjin; hence, he asserts dominance over his wife; hence, he is loyal and has honorable traits. And honestly, as a Lord, you don't want anything other than that, or necessarily smarter than that, because only the Lords in this world are allowed to act more freely. However, I also think that he is not in pain as a result of Marikos' refusal, as Pudgy and Spartan suggested. He feels sorry for himself, can't handle a rebellious, more intelligent wife, and only goes for what he wants. Self-pitty it is for him, nothing else. He just can't do anything about it because it would go against his Lord's will. Someone like this would have probably only had one lucky moment in his entire life, just a small chance for anything more honest or noble towards their relationship, and most likely, Mariko would have shut that down in an instant. Anyway, a person is also not just one trait. Yes, he hits his wife, we dislike it, alright and sure nowadays I would not tolerate this in my personal environment. But he has also shown great and honor-worthy traits, and you can definitely pay respect and even admire those. He also puts up with a lot - its obvious that Mariko and Jons relationship is something others would justify murder on. No he does what his Lord demands - you have to respect that level of dedication. Honestely, all of this is more on Toranaga, because he uses all his people and put them in those situations.

Yeah, can't wait for Troy.

Anna (Mariko) better get an award for her performance in this show. She does so many subtle emotions so well but she really ran the gamut across the whole show with showing so many layers of emotion, feeling, and line delivery as well.

SuddenImpulse

Ah you beat me to it!

SuddenImpulse

Sigh... When I first watched this episode and got to the end, I just sat in silence for what felt like hours. The acting by Anna is god tier. RIP to the realest Mariko.

I think it's interesting that Pudgey, who normally is very good at reading people, seems to find it a bit hard to read Yabushige's actions, while for me he's one of the easiest to read/predict 😄 I think Toranaga also said last episode that both Yabushige and John are very predictable. Toranaga knows he plays both sides for personal gain/survival. So, in this episode he first wants to save his head by sucking up to Ishido, and Ishido later decides to use him in Mariko's assassination (Ishido also knows Yabushige will take that deal): Yabushige first makes sure the shinobi get in (unspotted), and then he acts like he is one of the victims (if he ran away, it would make it obvious that he was in on it).

To answer Pudgey's question as to why Mariko was tying her legs together when she went to commit seppuku was because of the culture of feudal Japan wanting women to maintain their dignity in death. This practice kept the woman's legs closed so that she wouldn't die with her legs open and remain in a modest posture.

If u want climax Spartan watch Troy and Kill Bíll

Alex

This is why Pudgey is my favorite (Spartan don't read this).

SuddenImpulse

I absolutly love the ending of shogun. Also this episode is a banger. You know i think pudgey is gonna like the ending. And spartan is not gonna like it. This gonna be interesting haha. Spartan is in his mind with the last samurai🤣🤣🫣

john

Phenomenal EP again And fun little fact I read from the writers. Episode 2 when John thanks yabushige and says it poorly yabushige then says "we'll try something different" and has him say " I am a dog" over and over. Lol that was all improv between the 2 started by yabushige actor. He was only supposed to pat him on the back

"Flowers are only flowers because they fall" RIP Mariko

This is what I've been waiting for. 🔥
