MOD MESSAGE -IMPORTANT REGARDING SYNCING ISSUES ***

if you are watching the US version for example, it might not sync up perfectly as Binge AUS is a slightly different frame rate (The UK and EU versions usually sync up). There IS a way to fix this. Please follow these steps.

Option A: EASY WAY (recommended)

downloaded the "Youtube Custom Speed" extension. A version of this should be available on both Chrome and Firefox browsers. Once you download it, just go to extension settings and add a custom speed option, so you can get 0.959 which is the match

(Once you install the extension there should be an icon on your toolbar next to any other extensions you have for it. Click the icon. It will bring up a menu with the default speeds and a box where you can enter in your own custom speed. Type 0.959 in the box and confirm. Then you need to refresh the page the video is on. Then you go to the bottom bar of the youtube video, and the new 0.959 speed should be listed along with all the others. Then you just need to click that and you are set!)

Google Chrome: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/youtube-custom-speed/kmfcinojnfabkpndlgomnfjllgeppegb

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-custom-speed/

Option B: MANUAL WAY

CLICK THIS LINK if you want a better formatted guide with images included:

 https://www.labnol.org/youtube-custom-speed-201125

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------

 1. Open the video fully so that it opens up on Youtube itself instead of playing it through patreon. Press F12 to open up a special window, alternatively the manual way to do this

2. Go to the top right corner of your browser (in this case Firefox or Chrome) and click on the 3 lines or 3 dots respectively.

3. Select More Tools from the drop down menu.

4. Select Developer Tools/Web Developer Tools

5. This will open up a new screen within your webpage. Find the tab that says "console". Click where you see the little arrow with blank area.

6. Type in the following (I don't advise copy+paste as sometimes it doesn't like that) exactly as shown here: $("video").playbackRate=0.96 or whatever timing you think will work.

7. Press enter. Close that aforementioned window. Watch the video alongside your copy as normal and see if its syncing up correctly. If not, adjust the numbers again. Doing this allows you to set a custom speed for this video thats more specific than the ones given to you by default on the built in youtube video settings.

(0.959 speed is advised with this method)

Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

We hope you enjoy the video!

I think it's a bit harsh calling Legasov a snake. He's doing all he can.

Michael Short

I'll be skipping this one 😅 barely was able to watch it the first time

Minerva Ravenclaw

The way I am just not looking forward to episode 4. It is the absolute hardest episode in this series for me to watch. Like physically hard for me to watch. Pudgey, best of luck making it through it

Mike

Think about his disbelief like this. You've heard several engineers say "An RBMK reactor doesn't explode" and yet all signs point to just that. Being a scientific mind, he's having trouble reconciling it. It would be like if you went outside and saw a humpback whale flying around 20 feet off the ground like a bird.

EmwunGarand

Glad to hear it. Enjoy! If you ever have future issues, just hop in the discord (ideally) or in the patreon chatroom. We don't always catch all the comments on here.

SuddenImpulse

Wow thanks so much @SuddenImpulse that worked! I really appreciate the help =) Time to catch up on full length Chernobyl now haha

Reaction Junkie

They watched GoT with US HBO through a VPN, this was watched on Binge, an australian service that has HBO shows and some other things. May I ask what issues you are having? If you set it to .959 it should be perfectly synced, at least if you are a US user, (it did for me and others I am aware of at least).

SuddenImpulse

Sorry if this is posted somewhere already. About the syncing issue some of us are dealing with, I was wondering if anyone knows why the syncing is an issue with Chernobyl when It was fine for GoT? They are both on the same streaming service are they not? I'm worried that other HBO series or movies they react to in the future will have the same issue and it's impossible for me to watch the full length Chernobyl even with all the tips to rectify the problem.

Reaction Junkie

I think you miss understood that scene as we can see the helicopter did indeed crash into a steel rope which was being held up a crane. The smoke I think affected their visibility. You can see the propellers collide with it and both break.

AlrightThere

Hi, guys. I understand that you don't really know much about the Soviet Union. So, let me provide you some information about how the state handled a difficult situation. On June 2 1962 in Novocherkassk (current Russian city) there was a strike of factory workers due to the increse prices for some products ( butter, meat, etc.) by 25-30%. There was no market economy, all prices were dictated by the state. So, they brought an army with tanks. As a result of the strike, 26 people died on the spot, one died in hospital. The KGB photographed people on the street during the protest. The next day, June 3, 240 people were arrested, 7 of them were sentenced to death, 105 were sent to the GULAG (it's where Hopper currently is in the ST btw). The state tried to hide everything. The KGB intercepted all letters from the city. This little story may help you to understand the motives of some people in the show.

Kirill D.

for once, as an Australian, watching Australians, Im not the one that has to deal with stuff like syncing issues

Hugh S

Through this series you have to keep reminding yourself that this event actually happened. It seems so unfathomable that something can be this detrimental to life.

Liam

the series is very hisrtorically accurate with some things being dramatized like the helicopter which in reality flew into a hanging steel rope instead of crashing simply because of radiation

MO

I wouldnt tell them that. Let them have the same experience as everyone else.

MO

After watching this series, I've read the "Voices from Chernobyl" book by Svetlana Alexievich. One of her interviewees was the wife of the firefighter we see in the movie.

Nalier

The flashlights malfunctioning did really happen and the names of the three men who went in are historically accurate.

Yusuf

Ulana (lady scientist who discovered/revealed the impact of dumping sand/boron and doing everything she can to help) is a fictional addition to the series to represent all the scientists during that time who were doing whatever they can to breakthrough the Soviet bureaucracy to help the situation.

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

It's alright that you dont know all their names or exactly what's going on. That feeling is exactly what the series wants us to feel, especially at the start. No worries, the series will reveal the details exactly when it means to :)

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

The old guy you don’t like is Maester Luwin of Winterfell!

Luke

The reading the physicist Ulana Chomyuk got was 8 milliroengen, not 8 roentgen. That is 0.008 roentgen, but that is 400km away from Chernobyl which is apparently still significant. Also you guys saying that they delayed the evacuation and everything, as well as no one believing in the fact that the core exploded, it would really change much. The reactor exploded anyway, whether they acknowledged it immediately or 30 hours later. Of course the evacuation could have been implemented sooner, but the destruction and the effects were gonna be the same.

Leonidas Raftopoulos

Those are the real names of the men who entered the plant. Don't Google them until you finish the series.

Jon Biavati

Yup

Jon Biavati

I was in Italy visiting family a year after the incident and remember the food restrictions due to radiation contamination. We couldn't get fresh milk and certain fruits and vegetables. I was a typical teenager and wasn't phased, but it's crazy to think about it now.

Mic

Thank you for your reaction - very tough to watch. The measurements and many things such as those facts were the actual ones. The evacuations did happen and thousands of people were evacuated quickly once the evacuations were begun. They stayed in various places in Kiev and other apartment houses, etc, were built like Chernobyl (minus the nuclear plants) for them to live in. Some of the people still live their today. One thing that is unrealistic is that it was actually worse being able to speak up to a higher in command due to the chain of command and hierarchical government. Mikhail Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union at the time. The way things worked were the men directly beneath him could speak to him, the people beneath those men could speak to them, etc. etc. So Legasov being able to speak up even to Scherbina was something that could have gotten him thrown in prison or killed (not much of a stretch the way Scherbina threatened Legasov on the plane to Chernobyl. Them allowing him to speak about the situation and being involved in the meetings was strictly due to his expertise. That is why Scherbina and Gorbachev both said to Legasov on separate occasions that he should just stick to the area he can speak on and they didn't even want him to make any suggestions about anything that could make the country look bad - like having to evacuate people, how bad it really was, potential medical problems down the road. Very closed system.

Lyn Hurst

I think the lady physicists assistant is Larys from HOTD!

Hoary Old Bitch

A radiation dose of 300-550 roentgens is considered to be maximally dangerous and negative for the human body. Radiation of 1000-5000 roentgens leads to an instantaneous coma state, in which a person dies 5-35 minutes after the start of exposure. 8000 and more roentgens is a lethal dose of radiation incompatible with life, at which a person dies instantly.

Jackhammer

The fact is that this denial of the truth is connected to the history of the Soviet Union. In the first half of the 20th century, there were many repressions, and anyone who denied the state's policy could go to prison or be killed. Stalin introduced many repressions. At the official level, they never admitted that anything happened. For them, nothing could have happened. "The state does not lie, the state can never make a mistake." This was so ingrained in people's minds, as an instinct of self-preservation, that they were ready to deny anything. That's why Fomin asks several times: How can a reactor explode? And no one knows, because on paper everything is perfect, and what is not perfect is classified.

Jackhammer

Real-life spoiler: we're alive now, so they did manage to do something and fix it a bit

Jackhammer

ohhh that makes so much sense!

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Idk if it's been mentioned yet but Boris is the Baron from Dune lol

Just finished ST, now onto this! 🫡
