Yeah, the moment Hiromatso sacrificed himself, it became absolutely obvious, that Toranaga is making a show. You expected it of course with the character Toranaga is, but that scene just solidified it. That man is playing a different game and he plays his enemies, and his allies as well, based on all their rules, convictions and beliefs. A world so strongly based on rituals becomes predictiable - a lot more at least than what we experience. Hiromatso ordering his son to stay loyal to his Lord nearly gave it away I would say - risky step, but for the viewers that scene had to offer just too much.

Did pudgey just convince Spartan? I love you pudgey. Finnally some woman intuition that is right about this show hahahaha

john

Well I am not to sure that the sides of the coin weights even remotely the same. Mariko just didn’t show affection to Buntaro and didn’t love him. Which is btw fine. You don’t have to force yourself to love someone. She for example loves John even though she knows it’s not good for her duties. While with Buntaro people act like it’s understandable because you are in a bad emotional state that you beat your wife. Because you are angry and jelaous. A honorable good men would never lay hand on his wife. Even when he feels anger and jealousy. If you do that you are a piece of shit. It’s not some minor flaw that everyone has. He also treats others badly. Everyone is scared of him. Just because you are a complex person doesn’t mean you can’t be bad.

Rey Jr

I am a bit curious. Why has Mariko been a bad wife ? She didn't not just give him a chance. She just didn't love him. By that argumentation she also shouldn't have give John a chance. But she did because she truly loved him and couldn't resist. Putting blame now on her is insane. It's like saying a girl is emotionally destructive when she rejects me so it's understandable that I go hit the shit out of her. I don't think it's understandable at all that you turn to a abusive husband just because she doesn't love you back. Beating your wife isn't just some minor character flaw that everyone has. Also Buntaro has been a bad person to everyone, not just his wife. His son is scared of him. Sometimes I feel like because we like to analyse characters we get to the road that everyone is complex and their actions understandable. I agree that every human being is complex. But do I think it’s understandable to let your rage out on your wife. No

Rey Jr

I agree with your comments on Buntaro and Mariko, people are complex in life nothing and no one is black and white. Perception is people's reality and it is much more than that. Thank you for seeing all sides of their relationship.

Audra Muncy

He knew his duty well. RIP Hiromatsu.

Also very much enjoyed your commentary on Buntaro and Marikos relationship and their treatment of each other and that you both can see both sides of the coin for both characters.

SuddenImpulse

When you said that Buntaro hasn't been a good husband, I was about to say: has Mariko been a good wife? But then you pretty much explained the same thing, only you said it better 😄 (by saying that Buntaro was physically destructive and Mariko was emotionally destructive).

crispy chicken

Pudgey is correct in that Toranaga was pretending to be sick, and Hiromatsu was in on the plan. That is what Toranaga meant by him saying he knew his duty well and why Mariko hesitated and said his name like that when she had the realization. That said you are obviously correct he did not expect Nagakado's fate. He may have suspected he might do something rash, but you could not reasonably predict the outcome beyond that. Spartan is correct that its impossible to predict every outcome. You can plan a lot, and if you know people well you can reliably predict their behavior *to a point* but beyond that you have to have backup plans for if things don't go as expected or have to think quickly on your feet and adjust. Yes the 3 hearts thing plays a huge role in all of this. Great reaction! Looking forward to episode 9!
