MOD MESSAGE -IMPORTANT REGARDING SYNCING ISSUES ***

if you are watching the US version for example, it might not sync up perfectly as Binge AUS is a slightly different frame rate (The UK and EU versions usually sync up). There IS a way to fix this. Please follow these steps.

Option A: EASY WAY (recommended)

downloaded the "Youtube Custom Speed" extension. A version of this should be available on both Chrome and Firefox browsers. Once you download it, just go to extension settings and add a custom speed option, so you can get 0.959 which is the match

(Once you install the extension there should be an icon on your toolbar next to any other extensions you have for it. Click the icon. It will bring up a menu with the default speeds and a box where you can enter in your own custom speed. Type 0.959 in the box and confirm. Then you need to refresh the page the video is on. Then you go to the bottom bar of the youtube video, and the new 0.959 speed should be listed along with all the others. Then you just need to click that and you are set!)

Google Chrome: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/youtube-custom-speed/kmfcinojnfabkpndlgomnfjllgeppegb

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-custom-speed/

Option B: MANUAL WAY

CLICK THIS LINK if you want a better formatted guide with images included:

 https://www.labnol.org/youtube-custom-speed-201125

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------

 1. Open the video fully so that it opens up on Youtube itself instead of playing it through patreon. Press F12 to open up a special window, alternatively the manual way to do this

2. Go to the top right corner of your browser (in this case Firefox or Chrome) and click on the 3 lines or 3 dots respectively.

3. Select More Tools from the drop down menu.

4. Select Developer Tools/Web Developer Tools

5. This will open up a new screen within your webpage. Find the tab that says "console". Click where you see the little arrow with blank area.

6. Type in the following (I don't advise copy+paste as sometimes it doesn't like that) exactly as shown here: $("video").playbackRate=0.96 or whatever timing you think will work.

7. Press enter. Close that aforementioned window. Watch the video alongside your copy as normal and see if its syncing up correctly. If not, adjust the numbers again. Doing this allows you to set a custom speed for this video thats more specific than the ones given to you by default on the built in youtube video settings.

(0.959 speed is advised with this method)

Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

We hope you enjoy the video!

The scene at the end of the episode when the trees underneath the radioactive cloud start to turn a yellowish orange is so haunting. I can't tell if S&P caught that though 🤔😏

Evan White

why is the screen like that

Malthe Mikkelsen

I had to laugh when Pudgey said "He looks like Maester Aemon". Actually that was Maester Luwin xD

Patrick H.

I've seen this series in my Uni's cinema when it came out. Can't wait to watch it with you, guys.

Nalier

Im happy you took this series on. Excellent production, makeup, writing, directing, and most of all acting, to chillingly portray one of the single biggest human-caused disaster in history.

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

the unfortunate thing is if people don't risk their lives to stop what's happening...it will become an even bigger problem than it already is. millions and millions of people dead etc. so while it seems stupid to us, it has to be done.

Kayla

this is one of my favourite miniseries of all time. I would also recomend "the terror" which is another miniseries and hasna lot of the same actors as chernobyl, although i dont think its as well known and probably wont be worth covering on the channel

Duncan

That for me the most eerie scene in the entire show is the people on the bridge in slow motion. They are just living their lives completely oblivious to the horrendous circumstances surrounding them. Knowing that this actually happened is devastating and the affects the radiation has had on the entire world. We will ALL be feeling the effects of this for years to come. You bring up some important points of information about how this still is affecting society today with the current war in Ukraine. It sickens the mind.

AlrightThere

Ok, you've started Chernobyl and I'm going to assume continue with HOTD when it starts up this month so I'm back :) Have missed your reactions but this one was great. Chernobyl is a great 5 episode series.

(SPOILER for Chernobyl. Please don't read the rest of this comment if you haven't seen the other episodes) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This show is a brutally honest portrayal about Soviet politics and Communism, and how it messed up society at every level. I wasn't alive then, but it matches up so well with all the things I heard from people who were. The state is always right, the state always has to look good, so no one can leave, no one can make their superiors look bad, and labor is all that matters. The bunker scene shows you how even something that's perfectly fine in and of itself like labor has been turned into a weapon of the state by Soviet Communism and its obsession with pretending that the state cared about workers. So many people died because of it. As far as we know, everyone on the bridge watching the fire died. The final official death toll reported by the Supreme Soviet is a joke, as you'll see later. As much as I'm surprised that you know nothing about Chornobyl (Chernobyl is the Russian name of the town), this perspective without knowledge about the events is actually really interesting, with you having no idea what's coming and just appreciating the suspense of the show! The reason that not just Diatlov, but also all of the workers except Perevozchenko (the guy who ran into the control room saying that the core exploded) didn't believe that the core exploded was because they were given false information about the materials in the reactor. With the information they had, it WAS impossible. Watching the first episode, already knowing this, barely makes Diatlov any better, it's like a drop of water into a building on fire. Before the full-scale war, you could actually book tours to the exclusion zone and Prypyat. In 2022, when Russia marched south to Kyiv from Belarus, they occupied a lot of land north of Kyiv, including the exclusion zone, and radiation levels went spiking because of them. They held the guards at the plant hostage. Thousands of soldiers marched through the area and toward Kyiv and carried tons of radiation with them. The fallout actually affected Belarus more than it did Ukraine because of the winds. All of Europe almost died because of what Soviet Communism did to Ukraine and the other countries occupied by it. This show captures that so well. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * SPOILER above

Daria

Human nature is in many ways insidious. In an emergency, many people don't think of helping others, they think, how can I cover my own butt? Not everyone, thankfully, but it's disgusting to see a depiction of very true events that took place.

Paul

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?" lol, welcome to the Soviet Union.

EmwunGarand

That's not sad. I find your comment very interesting. Thank you for sharing.

Yusuf

oh wow O_O

SuddenImpulse

Chernobyl reminds me of 1984 For George Orwell, I mean how things used to happen, and how they always hide the truth. Big Brother is watching 👁️

Minerva Ravenclaw

Two others I meant to mention from this episode. The lady on the bridge holding her baby with the big ears 😆 was in GOT season 8 episode 5. She was the one Arya was trying to save with her little girl running through Kings Landing trying to avoid Danny on Drogon. One of the operators in the control room "Viktor" (you'll see him again in episode 5) played Alton Lannister. The cousin Jamie killed to escape his imprisonment. God I'm sad 😆😆

Melanie Vine

Hey guys, do you remember Jory from season 1 of Game of Thrones? Ned Starks guy who got stabbed through the eye by Jamie Lannister in the episode that Ned fought Jamie and got a spear through his leg? The guy they sent up to the roof and were shouting at in this episode is the same actor. You'll find a lot of Thrones actors in this show. It's HBO I guess. I'll point them out. We'll spotted Pudgey, I know you meant Maester Luwin 😁

Melanie Vine

I watched through Max and yeah its out of sync. You want to change the speed on S&P's reaction video and not the show video. If you change it to 0.959 (for US streaming version at least) or 0.96 for 4k disc version then there should be no audio alteration, or at least not one I have personally noticed.

SuddenImpulse

Dyatlov isn't stupid. It's all plausible deniability for him. He saw the graphite on the roof right after he walked out of the control room. I'm from Kazakhstan myself, russian citizen. Some of my parent's friends were drafted to deal with contamination after the accident.

Kirill D.

I'm glad you guys are watching this it's such an important part of human history in my opinion and in the grand scheme of things it didn't even occur that long ago. It's such a hard watch but brilliant tv. It's obviously dramatised but for the most part the events in the show are based on the truth. I'm watching the show on Amazon Prime and haven't had any syncing problems yet and im in the uk. I had problems with inception watching it on youtube but the 0.959 fix worked.

AlrightThere

If you're trying to sync the 4K discs you need 0.96, not 0.959.

AdrianF

Just watch it on Max or Amazon Prime. Neither the US or the EU versions sync. The speed change required to sync properly changes the audio voice of the characters significantly. It takes away from the experience.

Will of Anime

The speed thing is unfortunate, but at least in this case the same version is technically available to anyone in the world. If you watched this off 4K discs, anyone with those discs in Australia and anyone using disc or streaming elsewhere in the world* wouldn't have to faff about. *I'm in the EU and both the disc and HBO versions are off from your version, despite the mod's suggestion they'd probably be OK. Of course, using a version that screws over your Oz viewers is probably a bad idea.

AdrianF

When Russia invaded Ukraine they took over Chernobyl recently.

Yusuf

The reason the guy went up to the roof to check is because he had no other choice. He was given an order (during the soviet era) and refusing would also end badly for him. Also, in one of the title things it shows that it is in Ukraine (used to be part of the soviet union). Soviet union was made up of many countries.

Stympler

thanks, 0.96 didnt sync for me but 0.959 synced perfectly

Stympler

CUSTOM SPEED ADVICE: At least for me with the US HBO version the time that worked for syncing was the same as the Inception reaction video which was: 0.959

SuddenImpulse

I lived in a former eastern block country just a couple of years after the fall of the Berlin wall. The Soviet culture was ingrained in the people, and even though they had gained autonomy, there was a still a tendency to be compliant and follow authoritarian rule. My students told me some crazy stories of being surveilled and being afraid of what would happen if they didn't comply. I see much of their behavior and their history reflected in this show.

Mic

You were right, Pudgey. That actor is indeed Maester Luwin. You said Aemon, but we know you meant Luwin :-)

John Neiberger

thanks! this seems to be identical with the fix for inception so it seems the speeds are consistent between different media. makes sense as the frame rate difference should be constant

CpaSpartan Pudgey

try 0.96 speed with the chrome extention

CpaSpartan Pudgey

The chrome custom extension didn't seem to work for me. Kept trying slower speeds but the speed of the video didn't appear to change. Had to keep pausing to keep it relatively close to the Max playback. Maybe I'll try firefox to see if it works for episode 2.

Kevin Jones

I was wondering about the sync issues at first. It took me two minutes to fix it with Chrome using the procedure provided. After 5 minutes, there was a micro delay using the suggested 0.96 speed and I found using 0.959 worked perfectly for me. I'm in Canada.

P. L.

What you are seeing with the denial, look the other way, cover up comes from the top down - there was an illusion that had to be presented to the rest of the world (other countries are guilty of this also) that we are all together and nothing is wrong. It is just stronger in some areas where freedoms are less... all I am going to say. Soviets and Americans had a lot of secrets and though having nuclear power plants are not secrets, any whiff of a leak, explosion, sub standard equipment, etc. was a blow to the side where it happened and a reminder of the threat of nuclear weapons, war at the time, and just plain old terror. The magnitude of this reactor explosion was the largest in history as far as it being many times the payload of the bomb that hit Hiroshima (too lazy to look it up ...)

Lyn Hurst

I usually watch the reaction on My (ios) phone and so far haven’t had any luck. Anyone who finds a solution for ios please let the group know!

James Woodford

for my UK folks.. or those with a VPN.. NOW-TV works good for this show, like it did for GoT. if you're using an unsupported browser (like me, i was using opera gx), you can spoof your user agent very easily if you google it, just needs a bit of trickery in the dev tools (not against ToS or anything, they just do it since some browsers dont appear as up to date enough)

engraved

Is there any way to adjust speed while watching on an iPad? Chrome extensions don’t work with the tablet version of chrome.

Kevin Jones

For this series, "enjoying" the reactions is relative, but it's important for people to know that this event happened, to avoid it happening again

Sarah

Definitely check out the movie The Chernobyl Diaries. Now just to be clear it has absolutely nothing to do with the disaster itself, it's set in modern times, it's just a little 'What If' type horror movie. But it's pretty fun.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

The half-life of uranium 235, the fuel of this nuclear reactor, is 4.5 billion years. That is, in 4.5 billion years, only half of the nuclear waste will decay and become safe in Chernobyl

Jackhammer

Welcome to Soviet Russia!

Fonzee

oh wow! that's pretty cool. we are only now learning about this history, crazy stuff

CpaSpartan Pudgey

I'm in Ukraine now, the country where the disaster happened (it was one of the republics of the Soviet Union at the time.) It's a little funny how far you are from Soviet and post-Soviet culture and lifestyle. I think it will become clearer as the series progresses.

Jackhammer

Have you guys tried ExpressVPN or SurfShark to see if you can access HBO Max? Watching it at a different speed makes it the pitch and timing or music off while the speed you guys are watching has been appropriately pitch corrected by Binge.

Josh

Wait omg, thank you! I didnt know we were getting this right now 🔥

thank u next

tread lightly fool I will find it

CpaSpartan Pudgey

That chrome addon for youtube custom speed is also available on Firefox. Spartan was too lazy to add the link I guess :P

SuddenImpulse

**IMPORTANT** - Please Read description carefully as with HBO Max there can be syncing issues between different countries and we have provided solutions. If anyone finds out the perfect speed adjustment to sync up please let everyone else know in the comments below! We will update our description once we know it. Thank you S&P Fam!
