2024-04-18 15:57:35 +0000 UTCToranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada's character) is from a formerly revered line of rulers who had fallen into disrepute. His home base is the relatively new city of Edo, known today as Tokyo. At the time, Edo was not the capital city. That happened later on.

The show is set in the early 1600s. At that point, Japan had been split between ineffective/corrupt rulers and feuding warlords for quite some time.
