Is it just me, or is the sync way off?

NewsoulSam

Sorry, Pudgey, but that was INDEED poor Barb.

Carrie Smith

Also the dad being totally aloof and checked out is very indicative of the Gen x childhood in the 80s

Malorie

I’m sure they know by now but that was definitely Barb.

Could you clarify what you mean about the religion to our money? In god we trust was added to our money in 1864.

"I'm no history buff but I think the Russia stuff was a big deal." This is Cold War stuff. It was ALL about the Russians. It was one of the biggest culture-defining factors of the US. We added religion to our money because the USSR was secular. We refused to implement universal healthcare like the rest of the world because "That was a slippery slope towards communism". Tons of innocent people were thrown in prison and interrogated, tortured, or killed because some person would shout "They're a Russian spy!" Our space program was built around competing with the USSR. Supposedly we even dropped the nukes on Japan because we were trying to make a statement to the USSR. Everything about the US was being built around "not being like them". And the stakes we were told about were nothing short of "If we screw anything up, it is simply the end of the entire humans species." So the CIA did a lot of tests on the population with or without their consent. In one or two cases, they would literally unleash a deadly disease on a population just to see how a potential cure would affect the death rate. In this case, El's mother would have been subject to something like MK Ultra, which you can look up. Basically high psychedelics, hypnosis, electrocution, sensory deprivation, SA, and other forms of abuses to see which would best psychologically torture people. But yeah, it isn't super relevant to this episode, but it is relevant to why Hawkins Lab even exists.
