Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

We hope you enjoy the video!

Ken's Zhao is much more hateable than OG Zhao lol. And this Pakku pissed me off. Bro I was stuck in a giant ice ball for a century and I had to rush over here to protect your punkass while being chased by the fire nation. Sorry if I didn't have time to learn the other bendings for you.

ive heard thats looking like their plan, to shoot more on location than relying on the volume for everything. The volume is great for like wide scenery shots but with a crowd of people it looks off.

I also thought that healing dummy was a really neat concept and I liked the design of it with the water flow. I think that was a cool new lore addition, and it makes sense. Waterbending healing I imagine could go poorly with untrained individuals, so having them train on living people when they are new at it seems like it would not be a good idea. The CGI for the northern water tribe was wild too. very impressive. As far as Pudgeys comment on the northern tribe being hard to find, no, they knew where it was, just like people know where OMashu and Ba Sing Se are. There aren't many major population hubs in this world, so everyone knows where the big capitol cities of each nation are. The northern tribe is generally more isolated though, and they had a lot of detours from either getting lost or having to evade those chasing them, so I can see where maybe thats where you got that idea from.

My thoughts on the episode are quite similar to yours. -I think its good Azula didn't match off with Ozai because he is a very extreme person. He banished zuko for merely questioning his battle plans, not deciding to not only disregard a direct order from him but also to attack him. There would be no training from that, he would have either severely wounded her as a lesson, like Zuko, or worse. This is a guy that regularly torches people alive for minor slights. -Princess Yue, there were 3 episodes in the animated that took place in the northern water tribe. 1-The Waterbending Master 2-The Siege of the North Part 1 3-Siege of the North part 2 I do agree it would've been ideal to be able to stretch it through another episode for pacing but thats an unfortunate limitation of having 8 episodes. I also agree that I didn't really vibe with her as the character. I know this actress from a few other things I've seen, and she actually can be quite good with the right material, but I just don't think she was the right fit for this character, it was a miscast. Also...that wig....that wig was bad and should have never been greenlit. Idk what happened there but they could have at least done a better job hiding her natural hair that peeked out the bottom of the wig. Ideally it would've been nice to have the actress dye her hair for this since she has similarly long hair, but I know many actresses are reluctant to do that and especially so if they are only in say...2 episodes of something. Either way, that could've been done better. I gave my thoughts on the waterbending VFX in another comment here. I found the added depth and lore given to avatar Kuruk very nice here, we got some things there that we didn't get from the animated, same deal with more fleshing out of Azula's background story, and I agree on the lightning. I just hope that she has consistently blue fire in second season as thats a major trademark of hers. I understand them not doing it up to this point because they are showing her still finetuning and mastering her firebending a bit here. I also agree that the Hakoda actor didn't quite do it for me, but I'm willing to give him a bit more time before I judge him fully. I'm also glad they put the proper time and effort into the water fight scene, as its important. If they had cheaped out on it or sped through it, it would've fell very flat. While the dialogue writing in the show is pretty average, it is noticeably better when they aren't using a bunch of exposition and speaking more normally, which there was a lot more of this episode, so that was nice. I understand some people miss certain story beats from book 1 with Katara, but I think this episode really showed that this actress can embody the character through the range for people that were not convinced before, and her dialogue acting is much better when they writing is more natural like in this episode, vs some of the more exposition heavy dialogue in the earlier episodes.

I don't think they needed to hit on the sexism arc twice in the season. It's easier to space them out in the anime. Also, I think water bending is the hardest to nail with CGI. You have to consider wetness, light passing through the water and ice, and unusual movements and acceleration with some of the moves. I'm hoping they shoot on more locations in the next two seasons so they have to rely less on CGI.

I give a bit of an extra pass to water effects in cinema generally (not just this show) because VFX/CGI artists have said for the last two decades that simulating realistic looking water (and complex hair/fur physics flow) is one of the hardest things to do and can easily look off if its not just right, and also can be very expensive, a lot of other effects are a lot more forgiving in this regard.

SuddenImpulse

I agree with almost everything you guys said. The small differences (in opinion) are: - The waterbending/ice looked great to me (so not the weakest). It just seemed a bit slow, I'll give you that. - Kuruk didn't seem that great to me. His entrance was, but his appearance wasn't. His clothes and especially his makeup was all too clean for me / not really believable for someone being in a snowstorm. All in all he was...ok. - In the Anime, didn't Aang contact a few previous Avatars in the same session? Whereas here he contacts each Avatar in their respective territory/shrine, and I quite like that tbh. I also liked the healing dummy.
