Although I think Ted's actions after this episode (which you're past now, but [spoiler for anyone not past season 4]) are very dumb, there is really nothing at all wrong with how he acts before finding out where the money came from. His reasoning makes perfect sense from his perspective. He can get a lawyer and may very well be able to hash out a better deal. Even if it's not a lower payment, it could be deferred payments. It makes complete sense for Ted to choose this path and keep his business afloat. Even his reasoning behind buying the car makes sense. He also has no reason at all to think Skyler is in danger. He is no longer being audited after all. They were convinced he was not evading taxes, so the only issue left is payment. A lawyer can very possibly work out a better payment deal for Ted. (There's no trial by the way as Pudgey thought there would be. It would just be lawyers going back and forth making phone calls and coming to an agreement of a payment amount and schedule.) Saul probably knew all of this and that's why he told Skyler it was a bad plan.

waiting for 4x11

The pills Gus took were most likely charcoal pills, which would absorb most of the poison, but it's not a 100% antidote so even after throwing it up he suffered some effects.

A L

I hate Walter so much and love Gus so much in this episode. And his "leave in peace or stay and die" speech was up with Bill Paxton's speech in Independence Day.

Shannon Bey

Also, randomly, I cancelled Netflix recently as the only two things I wanted from it are this and BCS. My BB box set discs are mis-labelled for season 4. FWP's and all that.

AdrianF

Everything is on Walt. Jesse specifically told Walt that they can't just go in onto other's turf. The defence Walt gets - and continues to get from the fanbase - blows my mind... and even if this was as far as I had watched of the series I would say the same. Each to their own I guess.

AdrianF

Now we're getting to the good stuff, or the better stuff, it looks like season 4 will end around Xmas which will be a nice split. I hope you're gonna do Better Call after BB is finished?

AdrianF

I have always found it strange that so many reactors to Breaking Bad use the 'let's trace it back to Walt's fault' argument, an incredibly reductive way of viewing the show. He is indeed the catalyst of all major events but that shouldn't mean we absolve everyone else who misjudges/misacts along the way. Again, we see Pudgey attempting to shift blame for the street dealer fiasco to Walt due to his (very indirect) involvement in Combo's death. Yes, he pushed for more sales but does Jesse take any ownership of managing the operation and getting his friends involved? Shouldn't he be accountable for Combo's placement in rival turf? Maybe Combo himself for agreeing to be part of something fraught with risk? And even after all of that, isn't Jesse responsible for his own decision to go after the dealers despite being advised against it? That was his decision to make of his own volition, no one forced him to. Everyone is accountable for their actions. Tracing blame doesn't get you anywhere because we do not know where to draw the line.

This episode was so engaging. The cartel cooks faces when Jesse hands their asses to them is great. The scene at Don Eladio's is so intense. I love it when Gus steps over the dead guy who was supposed to be guarding him. The pills Gus took before hand were charcoal. Charcoal does absorb some of the poison but not all. The party's over for the Salamanca family. Crazy scene at the end fighting off the guys who didn't drink the Zafiro Anejo and Mike getting shot on top of Gus being really ill from the poison. Too bad Hector wasn't there to observe the scene knowing he could absolutely do nothing. Wheeling him into the pool would have been nice but then he wouldn't be available for Gus to taunt. The scene with Walt Jr. and Walt was heartbreaking. Yes Walt did mess up on Jrs. birthday. The fact that Walt is trying to control how Jr sees him is ridiculous. No matter what Walt says, Junior remembers what he does. He is fed up with all the BS he is getting from both parents.

Lyn Hurst

I don't think Walt jr. acts like a spoiled little shit about the car. It's clear that the car is nothing like the car he would've wanted, but he can't say anything about it because it's a gift. So he is clearly disappointed but tries to act normal and later even a bit happy about it just to make his miserable father happier. On his own birthday - as a 16 year old who probably feels a bit neglected with everything his parents are going through and a new baby on the family. I think that's actually rather mature way to act in this situation for a 16 year old. Spoiled little shit would be crying and complaining or even refusing to take the car, demanding to get a better one. The fact that his mother buys him a car that is nothing to his liking just goes to show that his mother didn't either really pay attention or care enough about his sons preferences - instead decided to go with what she herself deemed best. It's also a sign of "mother knows best" attitude which would be probably the most annoying thing for a 16 year old (I know I once was a teenager too). It's not like they couldn't have bought a car that is affordable, safe and still looks and feels at least a bit like the cars Walt jr. was dreaming about. Things like these are important to teenagers. Hell, I'm well into my thirties and I would still never choose a car as ugly as that one regardless if it was the greatest car ever made. I think all things considered (and the fact that Walter jr. knows very little about the deeper level of struggles his parents are going through) I think he acted very mature about it and nothing like a "spoiled little shit".

TT

Gus was not supposed to give a speech for Don Eladio, the bastard who gives orders. Instead, he gives many terrific speeches for Hector, the one he hates the most.

Jackhammer

Interesting I never paid attention to that. Mike was probably putting his gun up to get inside the car body first idk lol or maybe they were prob going to waste Jesse and leave him there. Who knows.

Daniel

Also Mike is great

Guadalupe Rosas

Personally, I think Gus delivering a speech would be cheesy and it wouldn't be in his character he' is the silent type and I think his silence speaks more than any words ever could

Guadalupe Rosas

I think this might be my favorite episode. Jesse sonning the cartel chemist is definitely in my top 5 favorite scenes, and so is the final scene.

A L

I agree with Spartan that Jr. acts like a spoiled little shit about the car. 😅 But he's such a sweetheart otherwise. I love how Jesse and Jr. are sort of on parallel tracks in this episode, both becoming their own men--Jesse leading a cook on his own and proving himself in that shootout, and Jr. being a support to Walt and speaking up to him. Fully agree with calling Jr.'s response to Walt's monologue a "wake-up call." The look on Walt's face and the abrupt cut suggest he isn't able to take in in that spirit. He's too attached to his own view. An unspoken thing in the series is the way Jr. disability is a kind of foil to Walt's desire not to be seen as vulnerable, when really there's nothing inherently wrong with being vulnerable and needing support. Oh, and "Don" isn't the guy's name. His name is Eladio. Not that it matters now that he's dead. 😁 Like Gus says, "Don" is a term of respect that's used for bosses in the cartel and other organized crime.

Kate

This is a great episode. It's strange to both root for Walt & also Gus, but you're kind of compelled to. He got his revenge, and boy was it deserved. Jesse stepping up to the plate big-time. As far as Ted is concerned, he is very self-centered. Personally, I'm highly against income taxes, but it goes beyond that because he's not taking some ideological or political stand. He doesn't care at all that his actions are bringing extreme risk towards someone he professed to love, Skyler. He's a narcissist, simply put. But not even a smart one.

Paul

The parallels of Walt seeing Jesse as his son and him calling Walter Jr Jesse is so interesting. And the conversation about how he saw his own father so broken so that he doesn’t want his own son to see him as weak….a lot to unpack there! Love this show.

Ailene Evangelista

This is the thrid time I've watched this episode, and I swear right at 51:07 "spartan & Pudgey" run time and 45:43 on "Breaking Bad" run time.. It looks like Mike is about draw up on Jesse, but gets shot by cartel dude!! Could be a director error, but I don't think so.. just wondering if anybody else is seeing what I'm seeing..

PastaDon

we did! god damn what a line for us to miss 😅😅

CpaSpartan Pudgey

oh shit! our bad haha but that's very interesting

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Yeah this is the most annoying thing about the Breaking Bad fanbase, is that they will always take Jesses side, and never Walts. Obviously Jesse is the more relatable and likable character, but they each treat each other equally good and bad.

Gemineye

Bryan Cranston was absolutely fantastic in this episode and somehow he gets even better this season like some of the best acting you’ll ever see and yea like others have said Walt thought that junior was jesse but I am genuinely confused how Pudgey thinks that mike has done more for jesse than Walt at this point is kinda insane 💀and yea as shown, jesse gets around the same percentage as gale not Walter so yea and when u trace it back whether on not u think Combo was Walt’s fault which it isn’t completely since they both have too agree but they still used kids to kill regardless soo it doesn’t change much tracing it back , It is 100 percent jesse’s fault that they’re in this mess and im not hating on him bc he’s one of my favourite characters but even when pudgey tries to be unbiased like at the end , she still shifted the blame back on Walt as usual, like for once just blame jesse when he’s in the wrong.

Aztek > PT

Justin

Oh yes...It's on!!!

Tim Martin

"Salud" is so good...now I'm gonna have to watch "Crawl Space" again...for about the 100th time (no joke) LoL

Tim Martin

PT Cruiser is one of the ugliest cars ever made. That's why Walt Jr was disappointed.

Ademir Junior

You missed Walter calling walter jr. Jessie, when he was about to leave the room. So the whole emotional speech was actually for Jessie

Lennie from Denmark

I mean anything involving the Cartel even irl is not that far off from GoT. Remember Tortuga, The Twins?

Ersin Günay

Tio's head...love you guys, but you've watched too much GoT.

Demented Avenger

Very important

Justin

Jesse's video game skills saved Gus & Mike

Justin

I think you may have missed Walt calling Junior “Jesse”. My apologies if I’m mistaken

Tim Martin

You guys missed Walt calling Junior Jesse!

Ersin Günay

This starts a string of episodes, that, in my opinions, doesn't let up until the series finale.

Demented Avenger

Have been waiting all week for this one! One of the best episodes of the entire series. Can’t wait to see your reaction.
