Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | Reaction & Review

Also very cool how the story handled predictions/prophesy (which is a reoccurring theme) because even though the divination professor seems like a crackpot, what she says to harry actually comes true, just not in the way anyone thought it would. These stories are excellent with that subject... even where the prophesy is accurate, its still frequently impossible to understand the prophesy completely before it plays out.

The movie leaves out two really great facts which make this movies ending even more powerful: 1. Lupin, James Potter , Sirius black , and Peter Pettigrew were all great friends at Hogwarts and beyond (although it seems like Peter Pettigrew was not as close as the others...kind of the "hanger on" in the group). When Lupin was attacked and turned into a werewolf, James Potter and Sirius Black learned to be Animagi (both turning into large animals -- Potter A stag and Sirius A huge black hound -- in order to help keep Lupin under control/out of trouble on full moon nights. And. 2. The friend group above created the Marauders Map made by Mooney (Lupin), Wormtail (Pettigrew), Padfoot (Sirius), and Prongs (James Potter)...all obvious names if you think of the animals they turn into. So really, that map is also Harry's birthright.

Sidenote: They did my boy Ron dirty in the movies. For example, when Snape calls Hermione an insufferable know-it-all, in the movie Ron agrees. But in the book, he doesn’t put up with anyone disrespecting Hermione (or any of his friends). He asks Snape “Why ask the question if you don’t want an answer?” and sticks up for her. Also, in the books, it’s Ron that says if they “want to get to Harry they have to go through him” when they are under the Willow, in the movie the line is given to Hermione. Still love Ron, but his character in the books is done better imo.

What I love so much about this movie is that it is a MOVIE beginning to end. Thematically, visually, story-wise, acting. The way that time is depicted throughout the film is also great, from the addition of the clock tower to the passing of the seasons. And it still finds time to make the world feel more lived in, like the boys goofing off in their dorm room, seeing Hogsmead, more of Diagon Alley, etc.

Lolilie

It should come soon

Dont know if you noticed but the architecture and geograpghy of howarts changes a lot in this movie. Spartan mentions that this one made him feel more imersed in the world and i think that this has a lot to do with it. In the last movies people just kinda apear in new sets whenever we go into a new scene. But in this one the director does a very smart thing that is keep conversations on the move. We see a lot people walking from classrooms to stairs to the coridors to the gardens to hagrids place to the tree and so on. so we get a better sense of the geography and where everything is in relation to the rest of the castle. It feels a lot more like a real place. And the best of it, it serves the fucking plot.

So glad you guys enjoyed it love the prisoner of Azkaban it really set the tone for the rest of the series.

Just want to say, that I'm enjoying your reactions! I want to make one suggestion. If you figure something out, try not to spoil it for each other. You'd be amazed at how much more exciting the movie is if you don't know what's about to happen. But I know that's difficult for you guys, since you're in competition most of the time. This was my favorite of the books, but all the books are just amazing! I hope you get the chance to read them sometime. It would give you a lot of insight into what's going on. I'll be happy to share that info with you, but I want to wait until you get to the end so as not to spoil anything. One last thing, I believe you shouldn't compare the movies because it's one story broken up into seven books and eight movies. Sorry that this is so long, lol. Can't wait for the next movie! I know you're really going to enjoy it!

Oh and Harry is different because he’s a teenager now so he’s going through puberty and has teenage angst. So it’s perfectly normally he’s acting differently cuz he’s growing up. So he’s gonna be acting out more frequently.

Amber Wilmot

Just letting you know for the 3rd movie here it is a NEW Dumbledore. Bcuz the Dumbledore from the first 2 movies passed away. So they needed to find a new Dumbledore to replace him. Even though I’m sad he passed I do love both Dumbledores. I think Richard Harris was perfect for the first 2 because it was childlike the first 2 movies so the fact that the 3rd one gets significantly darker it was a blessing in disguise to get Michael Gambon as Dumbledore for the rest of the franchise. And idk if you heard but we just also lost Michael Gambon just last month. RIP. Both amazing people/actors. ❤️

Amber Wilmot

oh WOW! we actually didnt! he looks so different holy shit

As serious fans of Batman, I’m genuinely so surprised y’all didn’t recognize Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) also know as Commissioner Gordon.

Joana

I don't know if it's been said (not a movie spoiler), but the Defense Against the Dark Arts job was jinxed by Tom Riddle, when Dumbledore didn't give him the position

Zakk

It’s one of mine too but the last one is my #1 favourite

lupin did not help sirius get into the castle, he thought sirius was guilty but as soon as he saw peter pettigrew on the map he knew sirius was framed wrongly. All 4 of them were best friends at school and created the map together but peter was always more cowardly and joined voldemort in the end to keep himself safe, betraying his best friends

Sean Carroll

Spartan's comment of Buckbeak ( "oh so its from 2023 gotcha" ) did me in, laughed so hard that really set my mood for the vid. :)

neutchain

Harry’s Dad was friends with all 3 of them, who together created the Maruader’s Map. This is how Lupin knew what it was & how to use it. "Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs” Moony 🌕 = Remus Lupin Wormtail 🐀 = Peter Pettigrew Padfoot 🐾 = Sirius Black Prongs 🦌 = James Potter They were best friends and all troublemakers; however, they were also (minus the rat) incredibly talented, all of which is evident by the skill it would take to create such a complex map of the school and the location of every person in it. It helped them sneak off to be with Lupin during a full moon. Which to do so meant becoming Animagi, another extremely difficult feat of magic for school boys. Such an incredibly deep and well thought out story. Can’t wait to see your reactions to the rest! (Lastly, RIP + wands up to the great Michael Gambin)

Eric

I'm begging you to not watch the Fantastic Beasts spinoff series after that. It will ruin your love for Harry Potter greatly

Sasha

Sirius is mentioned in the first book not the first movie

Sean Carroll

Even tho I hate time travel in stories this is my favorite Harry Potter. The only one that isn’t focused on Voldy Moldy as the end conflict. I still remember getting the book at midnight and reading it all night as a kid. Which became a tradition with each release. Movie did a great job too

Timminson

I’m so happy you guys are reacting to these movies they make me so happy, you guys will really enjoy the next movies. Poa and Gof are two of my favorites

Haunxj

Scabbers is the same rat of the previous movies indeed. There is a theory that the spells Ron shows Harry in their first year, when they are in the Express, to turn Scabbers yellow and fails, it failed because it wasn't really a rat. Sirius is mentioned in the first movie as well, in the very first scene, when Hagrid take baby Harry to the Dursleys, Dumbledore asks him where he get the motocicle and Hagrid says "Young Sirius lend me so I could bring Harry". In the books, that was the exactly moment that Sirius gave Harry to Hagrid and ran after Peter Pettigrew to kill him, before the rat cuts his own finger and ran away in a rat form.

Loved the reaction! The next one can't come soon enough!

Michael Gambon plays Albus in the last 6 movies. He just died last week. Different guy.

Ludus Aurea

Yayyyy I’m so excited for the next one it’s my fav :)

Gummybear

No way! I’ve watched these movies countlesss times and never noticed 😂😅 lol

Gummybear

I still get chills when Harry shouts EXPECTO PATRONUM! With that epic orchestra music getting louder in the background. And Harry realizing he IS that “most powerful wizard” that Dumbledore was talking about. EPIC HARRY MOMENT!

After Richard Harris' death, Dumbledore was recast and from films 3-8 was played by Sir Michael Gambon, who coincidentally died a few days ago. Fun fact: Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) was considered for the role but he thought it was too similar to his role in LOTR. David Thewlis (Lupin) was originally considered to play Professor Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone. Harry not being in trouble for performing the spell in his bedroom is a plot hole, especially since him blowing up aunt Marge is well known. The dementors are a metaphor for depression and were based on J.K. Rowling's own experience with the disease. As someone who has battled depression for years I can honestly say this is the most accurate description: The presence of a dementor makes the surrounding atmosphere grow cold and dark. It drains its victims of happy thoughts, memories and emotions. Every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of them. It forces its victims to relive their worst memories. It is invisible to muggles just like depression is invisible to us. The Patronus Charm makes it go away, even if it's just for a little while, and brings a bright positive energy like therapy (or whatever works for that person) does with depression. The film doesn't explain the origin story of the Marauders Map and that it was created by a group of four friends at Hogwarts together: Prongs/James Potter, Moony/Remus Lupin, Padfoot/Sirius Black and Wormtail/Peter Pettigrew. Or the fact that James, Sirius and Peter learned to be Animagi (shape-shift into an animal) so they could safely be with Lupin when he transformed into a werewolf at the Shrieking Shack (as werewolves are only dangerous to humans, not other animals). In the book we learn that Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, knew all along that Scabbers was really Peter Pettigrew and that Sirius Black was disguised as a dog. Crookshanks had even been helping Sirius get into Hogwarts to try to capture Pettigrew. It's almost universally agreed upon that the movies did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione. In the book, Ron protects Harry against Sirius. Also, when Snape calls Hermione an "insufferable know it all" Ron sticks up for her and is put in detention, but in the movie he agrees with Snape. Hermione's line "Is that what my hair really looks like from the back?" was ad-libbed by Emma Watson due to her concern over her hair. The director loved the line so much he kept it in the film. When the twins open The Marauder's Map for the first time the name Newt Scamander can be seen. He is the main character in the Fantastic Beasts series. And when Harry receives a feather with Firebolt in the end, it's actually one of Buckbeak's feathers (making it clear that the gift is from Sirius).

Heida

he was turned because lupins father hated the werewolf community

Belle

lol its a different dumbledore actor!

Belle

I remember watching this movie on new years when I was 8 years old at my dads friends house together with his children and my brother, who were all a few years older than me, and being too scared to watch the scene with the black dog at the beginning haha... that was my first encounter with the Harry Potter series and after that I watched the first two movies and eventually grew up with those movies... I remember having to have a slip from my mother so I could watch the following movies in the cinema (they are rated 12 years and above here in germany). I would never have thought back then that I would rewatch these movies in 10+ years and look back so fondly, yet here we are... I'm glad I can see you expierence these movies, and other popular media as well... I usually don't comment this in-depth but this movie just brings up special memories, which are not even that particularly related to the quality of the movie :D Nonetheless I really enjoy this reaction series... keep it up <3

SleeplessCSGO

whats really cool is besides dumbledore and i think 1 other person, everyone else is the same actor its really cool so you can see everyone age as teh movies go on, abnd yeah dumbledore is a diff actor, he passed away in real life before the third

0o_andrew_o0

To fill you guys in on some stuff that wasn’t included in the movie from the books, james (Harry’s dad), Sirius, professor lupin and Peter pettigrew were all friends while they where at hogwarts, lupin was a werewolf and it was already controversial that he was allowed to enroll to begin with but dumbledore made arrangements for him when he transformed. James Peter and Sirius decided they wanted to help their friend so they all became animagi ( wizards that can willingly turn into an animal ) so they could hangout even when Lupin was transformed during a full moon.

Connor Hess

So the reason sirius black escaped azkaban and got past the dementors is simply because he can transform into a dog by choice. Dementors couldnt trace him as he wasnt human when he escaped. And to answer why lupin is a werewolf, he got bitten by one at the age of 5 and i forget the reason why but i dont think it was completely random. However it made his childhood traumatic. To my knowledge all your other questions may be answered in future movies so sit back and enjoy

Klaus

cinematography is next level in this movie

Cs Zoltan

You’re both asking all the right questions and are putting together the pieces! Can’t wait for goblet of fire!

Carter Rowe

RIP both dumbledores, both a great part of my childhood and great actors
